It's like an old roundy-round move. Let them go low, slow down enough to let them drift out and give you an easy shot under them, and then take the position back. You won't get clipped that way, and I never assume that the other guy knows how to drive until I see it myself.
If a guy tries that and sticks it low, then I'll try to actually race him a bit more.Comment

Re: iRacing
Most of the time for me in the trucks if someone looks to be faster I'll let them around unless it's late and then I'll go easy in and get to the bottom and come flying off the corner and when you add in worn tires it makes for easy passing without worrying about idiots.Comment

Re: iRacing
Usually you can talk to them about what kind of PC you want, mention the price range you're looking at and most small shops can come up with the best performance for what you can spend.
Flexibility really and room to update. You get to pick everything you have on a custom PC but with something prebuilt, you may be able to upgrade but atleast with a custom you know anything can be changed out.
Good overview of custom vs prebuilt.Comment

Re: iRacing
Just a question for "i c u".
Are you serious about racing other people online? I saw your other NASCAR post and whatnot, but do you understand the intricacies of when to overtake, how to get through a race contact-free (braking early to stick a low line, carry a bit more speed and a wider arc for a high line, etc)?
The reason I ask is that you're not just going to get a game where you can race against NASCAR drivers and a season mode, etc. With iRacing it's 100% online, against real people, and when you mess up, you're messing up other people. Every time. It's not something I'd recommend to "learn" how to simrace on, because the stakes are very high for the people around you.
That being said, if you're serious about doing it, then the Rookie series are where you will start and be able to run in. However, unless you're committed to learning racecraft and not expecting to win constantly, it will be an exercise in frustration.
As Neebs said earlier (at least I think that's who it was), I would hate for you to go out and buy an entirely new machine and iRacing just to try and race NASCAR, only to find out that you're punting guys in the left rear trying to slide up underneath them, driving it like it's a Gran Turismo game. That will get you kicked out of the series quickly.
I'm not saying that's how you drive, so no offense intended. But the type of game you're looking for seems to be different than this, so buying an entirely new rig just to 'try' iRacing might end up as a frustrating decision.
However, if you buy a new rig and go pick up NR2003 with some mods for CoT and the 2009 season, you might end up in heaven. Of course you don't have frozen fields on yellows, double-file restarts for lead lap cars, lucky dog rules, etc...but it's the best 100% pure NASCAR racing that you'll find and it doesn't have the subscription fee. And you'd still need a PC to run it.Comment

Re: iRacing
On a side note, 30.5 at Lowes in those trucks is sick nasty crazy *** fast, man. I know I lose a bunch of time in turn 3, as I haven't found the right way to get into that corner, but I'm still at like 31.4 as my quick time. I am in disbelief at how much work goes into learning how to be fast, but also consistent.
I'm not even licensed for the Trucks yet, so I'm still limited to Legends/Late Models/SK Modifieds. Nobody seems to run the Mods much, so I'm messing around with short track LM's mostly.
One of these years I'll be able to make the step up.Comment

Re: iRacing
Does anyone have any tips for racing the Solstice?
There seems to be a deadzone, that i cannot get rid of. It about at the 1 o clock position where the wheel starts to turn with my wheel. Its almost impossible to save when that car slide which apparantely you have to do to be fast.Comment

Re: iRacing
I just finished my first road race at Lime Rock in the rookie Solstice and it was a blast. I was running pretty well until about the fifth lap when I took a corner too fast and the back end got loose and I hit the fence. I had to do a restart and ended up getting lapped. I had another excursion when another car tried to pass me at a bad spot and forced me into the grass to avoid him. At least I didn't hit anything but lost another lap by the time I was able to get back on the track and up to speed. Other than that I ran a clean race and didn't wreck anyone, unlike my first attempt at a road race at Laguna Seca.
I also ran a clean time trial before that so I picked up about .16 in my road racing safety rating. Not a bad session all in all.Comment

Re: iRacing
I really have a love/hate relationship with the Mazda. If I can get a setup that really suits me, I absolutely love the car, however if I can't, I hate the thing and want to drive it off a bridge.Comment

What about the Spec Racer Ford? Or the Skip Barber with the lower HP?Aaron

Re: iRacing
What about them? You mean me with the setups? Pretty much the same way, but I seem to be extremely sensitive to how a car is setup. Not everyone is like that.
I hope we'll get the Lotus earlier than we normally get new cars before the new season. I've really been looking forward to a high powered open wheel car, and it should be fun even though it's not as fast as a current F1 car.Comment
