    Re: iRacing after 2+ years

I understand your joy. I was doing the NASCAR iRacing Series but the races were too late for me and with only a couple of week I decided to jump back to the road and into the Skip Barber.

I recently got a new wheel (Fanatec CSW v1, with Formula Rim) and a new set of pedals (CSR Elite) and it has made my racing so much more enjoyable. I have also got faster using the new equipment.

So my last race I did today I was doing some practice and finally figured out the lines for Phillip Island. I was running the fastest times I have ran all week. I get into my qualifying session and I'm keeping up the pace and I'm feeling good. Then I notice that my qualifying times were at the bottom and I was in the #20 car. Yup I had the lowest iRating in a field full of aliens. I managed to run all 14 laps incident free and take home a 10th place finish in a race I really had no business being in.

It was a little frustrating because the first race I did today I would have easily won with the performance I put on in that last race but the top split race was a lot of fun even with the lower finish.

Here is a wreck from my last race. Had a couple good ones where guys flipped. Fortunately I finished the race with 0 incidents, just a last 10 laps of bumping with some guy. Ended up finishing 4th. This was a top split race. I still have a long ways to go, but I am having a blast.

It always feels good to see yourself improve like that. Nothing like getting a good finish with 0 incidents as well. Good luck as you continue. Also the SS at Charlotte is really fun.

Of course the next race sees me overtake 3 guys in one turn just to have a guy come up 2 lanes to spin me the very next turn. Haha, oh well. Despite circling the track once and going to the pits, I still finished 10th. There's something else about this being all real people, having to go to the pits, and it all adding up that is addicting to me.

Last race of the night saw another incident free race and a 2nd place finish. Plus another cool wreck haha.

Those crash physics are off the chain.

Does anyone here use telemetry data? I'm thinking about trying to learn how to use it to analyze my racing.

I've never used it. I've always thought about it, but I might be too lazy to utilize it.

I didn't mess with it much in iRacing, but I used Motec all the time back in my GTR2 and rFactor 1 days. I used to love firing up Motec and comparing laps between my teammates and myself to try and find that last little bit of speed.

It took me a bit to understand things and how to translate that to the setup and driving, but I found it really helped, especially when you come across a corner or track section that you just can't seem to figure out. It really helped my consistency, which has always been my big issue when it comes to sims.

You have any good links or advice? I think I need to work on this.

In other news I got a 3rd today in the Skippy at VIR. I was slow (in the mid to low 13's) but I kept it clean and watched everyone spin in front of me. I'm loving the open wheel cars right now.

What telemetry program were you looking at, jct?

Tonight's NiS race at NHMS was a joke...

iSpeed, MoTec, iAnalyze. Those are the options that I know of.

Yeah I watched someone who was streaming your split James, until I had to go to bed, and there were a lot of cautions in the time I watched.

Wish I did but it's been quite a few years since I used any telemetry and I don't remember it much at all other than that it helped me out quite a bit.

I just took a quick look at the iRacing forums and noticed iSpeed. From the looks of things, it won't help you get deep into setup work like Motec might, but it looks like a pretty good bet for someone trying to get faster as you can really focus on the things you control; throttle, brakes, steering, etc. Seems like they have a database that keeps track of laps run by other people so you can easily compare your laps with what others have run and uploaded.

Finally moved up to the K&N series and good god I'm slow! Everyone else is running 31's and 32's and I can barely run mid 33's. The car always feels so tight in the turns that if I gas it when I probably should, it's just going to go in the wall.

                                Post up a replay.

My guess is that either your line is off (This made a pretty huge difference for me in the cup car. I picked up about a second a lap.), or you're waiting too long to get on the brakes and can't get the car turned and back on the gas because of it.
