Definitely things I'm going to keep in mind. I spent $1000 doing this build initially in 2010. Then in 2013 I upgraded to the FX-8350 and probably put another $400 into it and I'm somewhat regretting it. It's worked, but I don't feel like I got my money's worth. Now just ~2 years later I'm already looking at it again. To me, this is the one that's got to last me a good 4 or 5 years so maybe I can justify spending a bit more across the build.

Re: iRacing after 2+ years
Michigan is restoring my safety rating. I'm just abusing it at this point. 6 races in the truck, about to run a 7th and I've made up .63 SR. I want to be at least a high 3 before I even think of running the Daytona 500. One last race ought to get me into the mid-3's and then I can go from there. Would like to try an open race maybe. 65 laps sounds like hell on tires, but maybe with a decent setup I could race my way to a mid-field finish.Comment

I haven't raced since November. I need to get back in it and probably will once the NiS season gets around. Just been busy lately and was a bit burnt out.Comment

Re: iRacing after 2+ years
I had just been so busy that I couldn't find enough time to do practice until this past week. I'm hoping I can keep the schedule open enough because I'm going to attempt to run a large chunk of the NiS season. I got my first C-class win at Michigan yesterday afternoon. All that SR farming paid off. I just drove away on them because I knew how to save tires. It really taught me to be patient and I got some practice at going from old tires and being conservative and then going back to new tires and having to drive hard again.
I'm in the mid-4's now so I feel safe for Daytona now. What I really want to try and do are setups and try some open as most tracks I'm so damn loose on the fixed setup.
I'd also like to do a bit more work on the road side now that I have my D license but I just can't stay interested in it as much as ovals. Figuring out 2-4 turns can be trouble enough some times, let alone 8, 10, 12 or more.Comment

Single monitor FTW!!!Comment

Re: iRacing after 2+ years
Got a second 5770 installed to tide me over and have it setup over 2 monitors so I can get see some more, especially on my right side in ovals. Got me up to 70 or so FPS consistently at Class 2 which is nice. I was getting around 60-75 on Class 3 with the single one. I'll take improvement for $40.
Also solved my skew/sleep issues by taking out my overclock. Sucks given I bought the FX-8350 to overclock (yet another reason I want to get rid of it). I'm trying to wait it out, but with a nice refund coming, I may go ahead with an upgrade. A 4790K/GTX 970 combo ought to be plenty for iRacing triples from what I've read, but I'm still keeping the R9 390 as an option.Comment

Re: iRacing after 2+ years
So part of it has to be not driving the Xfinity or Cup car at all since the end of NASCAR season really, but I was never that great at keeping it on track before except for the miracle that was 70 laps at Pocono. I cannot keep these cars the right way around for more than a few laps. I'm losing it out of the turns unless I am going 0.5-1.0 second, if not more, behind the fastest laps.
How the heck do you learn to control the power on these cars and actually put down some good laps? I remember a truck race at Iowa last fall I had no problem and got a 3rd. Xfinity, the only way I'm finishing 3rd is if 90% of the field wrecks and I coast around after that off the pace.Comment

Re: iRacing after 2+ years
This is just a guess, but based on what I remember from your replays from a few months back, you're probably going in too deep. That can cause you to get tight which means you're likely keep the wheel turned too long and the car will get loose off the corner.
Which track?Comment

And all tracks haha. I was doing practice at Charlotte, couldn't make it but a couple laps. Bought a set of tracks to start the season. Atlanta was a little easier, but still couldn't make it for long. I tried out Michigan again, wrecking out of the turns. Iowa in the Camaro, terrible. Back at Kansas in the fall in the Camaro, same thing.
I learned at Michigan in the truck that slow is fast and it got me good clean finishes and a win. Not sure why I can't apply that to the other cars and tracks. If I had the time, maybe I could setup the car to my driving, but I don't see that happening and still being competitive.
I'll do some testing at Iowa this weekend and post some laps from the Xfinity and Cup car if any of you want to take a look. I'd like to attempt to run that A race next week so I've done a non-plate race in that car prior to the season.Comment

Re: iRacing after 2+ years
Anyways, I've been running a ton of practice laps with a 360 controller and I've been very surprised how well it works. IMO - It's now easier to drive iRacing with a controller than PCars."The older I get, the faster I was!"

Re: iRacing after 2+ years
Here is the live replay of our league opener Tuesday night at Daytona I'm driving the 83 and MotorCityCadMan is in the 87. I had a top 5 car most of the night until my last pit stop where I tried to get to much getting into pit road and had a commitment cone violation.

Re: iRacing after 2+ years
If you're getting loose on corner exit, you're probably carrying too much speed through the entry and middle of the corner and having to crank the wheel on exit to keep from hitting the wall. This will give you that snappy loose feeling that is hard to catch until it's too late. This also scrubs your tires badly and will increase tire wear, which is also not desirable.
It's a hard thing to correct, though. A lot of the oval fixed setups are on the tight side mid-corner, which makes corner exit a real pain as you have to baby the car through the apex to keep from tracking out too quickly and getting snappy loose on exit.
Of course, I have not driven since November, but that is my guess! I guess I may jump back in the car soon, though I probably won't run Daytona as I really don't enjoy restrictor plate racing much, especially for a 200-lap race that is more survival than racing until the end (not unlike real life, I suppose).Comment

Re: iRacing after 2+ years
I attached the Cup one for entertainment value. It took me several laps just to get a clean one in and it felt slow in the low 24's. I lost it every time until the 5th lap.
For Xfinity, I was able to keep it on track, but I'm still in the upper 24's and even then, I got loose a few times taking it easy. Maybe in my split, that's plenty of speed. I just know watching a fixed practice, I was seeing guys with fast laps in the low 24's and people running consistent 24.4's-24.6's. I think a 24.6 or so was my best.Comment
