The absolute best training tool IMO is to hop into live races as a ghost in a spectator session. Once you can turn some stable laps (not necessarily fast), you can go to the "Events" tab and go to spectator sessions. Disable everything except the race options on the series you want to run and go jump in a race. If you know when the races are, you can jump in right when the session starts up and take the green flag with them.

In spectator mode, the other drivers can't hear or see you at all. You can take the green flag, follow cars around at a race pace (even benefit from aero effects and the draft), and basically get used to being out there with other cars on the track without the danger of taking anybody out. If you wreck and plow a corner, you can simply reset and get back out there.

Granted, there's a lot of race craft to learn in a "live" session, but ghosting in a spectator session lets you size up your speed in whatever split you choose (you can browse previous results and see where you'd fall based on iRating, but if you're brand new, pick one close to the bottom).

After you can stay stable and on pace for a full race, then try out live practice sessions. After that, run the Time Trials to get used to making consistent laps without hitting anything (since TT's affect your safety rating). They're boring, but running a race-length TT with 0 incidents proves you're ready to hop into a real race.

After all of that, I'd say you're ready to run a live race. Too bad almost no rookies actually do any of that, and go straight to the race. So you will probably get taken out in turn 1 of your first race through no fault of your own other than being there

LOL well i wish i could say i followed your path. took kneebon's advice and hopped into live practices for a while. once i could consistently run laps of sub/low 18 seconds at SoBo i tried some racing late at night, knowing not very many people would be on. my first few races i did terrible so i started really taking the advice of not racing for position but racing for no INC. so the last two races i had 0 and 2 INC and finished sixth and third, went up .14 and .08. gonna hop into some more practices at lime rock, maybe eventually get into some time trials too. really really loving this!

I have the $30 credits, debating on if I buy the Corvette for my B road course stuff or wait for

I'm not in a rush since my main series is the Grand-AM.

Iracing's 2011 Video Contest Final Voting is up, I wish I could say vote for me, but I do not think mine is the best of the 4 up there, so vote for the best one, and enjoy some amazing videos.

Normally I'd say something along the lines of I'll believe it when I see it, but I have the dentist on Wednesday and iRacing has a history of releasing things when I go to the dentist.

They said it on Inside Sim Racing and they are pretty reliable on their stuff.

I typed that with you in mind and was hoping you visit OS. I think you're the only one who would get it.

And yeah, I think it's the 4th time now. Almost never fails.

I'm sad it's coming out later in the day. I was hoping for an early release so I could try it before I go to the dentist. I'll probably still be there at 3pm. Oh well, it'll still be fun when I get home.
