Well, that's what I've been doing, but I'm just burning through components. So, I did some extra digging....

Turns out, theres a bug with 25% race distance in career mode where the scaling of the component use is way off. You can see it yourself if you select 5 laps distance, you'll see your components show crazy high lap expectancy. If you bump it to 25% race distance, those numbers drop dramatically. So, there's an issue here.

Sadly, I just found it now. Which is a bummer, because I thought it was normal, so I've been pumping all my resource points into durability so I could get longer life from my engines.

Apparently Codemasters is aware of it, and a fix is in the works.

That being said.... this game is CRAZY DEEP when it comes to career mode. The sheer number of upgrades, and how long you're going to have to work to top out your team is pretty crazy.

The racing... the driving model, everything about it though is just awesome. What a well done game, with the exception fo the above bug which im sure they'll iron out.

Oh... and the Hungarian GP... That track is messed up too. Major bug there... there's times where the asphalt just goes... black. completely black. Like, it doesn't exist when you're racing in cloudy weather, or rain. Daytime... the asphalt just looks dark and shadowed, but still a bit off... but in clouds, or rain. It's pitch black. Its got to be a bug too.

Overall though, this game just nails it again. The driving model is just.. incredible. So smooth and easy to work with a controller even.. Its just an awesome game.

Fired up my career with McLaren-Honda (must be a glutton for punishment). Qualified 19th for the Austrailian GP, but then the rain moved in, which proved to be a great equalizer as it lessened the impact of McLaren's horrible engine and let the decent chassis shine through. A couple dive bombs moved me to 12th, then pit strategy and retirements sent me up to 4th. Unfortunately for me, the track dried for the final 10 laps, and that HORRIBLE engine came through as I couldn't hold anybody behind me on the straights.

But I was still able to hang on to a point paying 9th position. Have an engine upgrade and an aero upgrade waiting for me at Bahrain....I'm loving the depth of this career mode.

Brandon patch 1.05 is up today on ps4 and fixes the 25% length career engine and transmission wear rates. No need to restart your career either but this does not "restore" parts that are already worn.

Great news! Just waiting on it to trickle down through MS and Live now.

Love that you don't have to restart career, although I may anyways since I pumped all my points into durability through the first 7 or so races before I found out it was a bug.

I restarted my career because I just had to roll with Haas again, so I only had run Australia prior to this patch so wear isn't a thing.

I drive like a gramma anyway to save fuel and not break **** on my car lol

I push in qualifying and late laps if I can pick up a position or two.

I'm running a Haas career as well, with a slick black and white helmet to go with the livery. Just finished Australia in a very respectable 7th place. Through FP3 at China and I'm looking much quicker than I've ever been there, it's usually one of my tracks to forget. So far Grosjean has been breathing down my neck in every session and was 8th in Australia.

I have a nice package of durability upgrades waiting for me in Bahrain.

I was running a career with Williams, partnering up with Stroll for the all Canadian driver lineup. I may keep that one going as it is.

That being said, I may start a second to really challenge me. I'm thinking with Renault, or Mclaren. Maybe Haas, but I used them last year, but I do like the look of the car this year. Decisions, decisions... I love how the lesser teams present a big challenge from a driving standpoint, and r&d upgrading during the course of your career.

Started a career with Toro Rosso partnering with Carlos Sainz. So far, just through FP1 in Australia but am really enjoying it. I like that they reduced the length of some of the practice programs, like tire wear so you don't have to live in the practice sessions to get resource points.

I drive with a wheel and no assists and I am pretty far off the pace through FP1. Usually that was the case in F1 2016 as well and my pace got better relative to the AI as practice went on and the track rubbered more, so I will see if that is the case again this year.

I ran a few quick races and the racing seems outstanding. I ran a quick 5 lap race in Spa last night as Stroll in the Williams and had some great battles in that 5 lap race, including going three wide into the turn at the end of the camel straight. The AI fought me all the way through the corner and I came out behind both of them. Something like that would of never happened in prior versions of the game. Love the racing action so far.

Question to you F1 racers....I have never owned a F! game, have done only NASCAR and Forza... How steep is the learning curve? Can I be competitive in races or will I be driving alone way back in the track? I see some use stability assist... by using the assists will I still get a good racing experience or will out quickly become too easy?

I appreciate any insight. I know without knowing my racing skill it's hard to answer these questions but let's just say not a "Rookie" racer just a rookie in F1.

Also thinking of buying a Thrustmaster T150 Pro for my PS4... good choice?

                    Thanks for any insight

This racing "simulation" is very console friendly. With some assists on and practice, even with a controller this will give you a great racing experience.

However, you don't have to use assists. I do recommend if you have the patience and desire to become really good at this F1 game you don't use them at all. One of the greatest features added this year is a numbered slider for AI difficulty. I don't have my wheel and I am using a controller with all assists off. I had the game early and for the first week all I did was run laps with the McLaren Honda until I was 1.5 to 2 seconds slower than the 19th place car. So right now the AI is at 93. Now when a start my career I can tweak more as I upgrade my car and get more familiar with the game, I can also increase the difficulty in increments to keep everything competitive

But by no means do you have to make things this difficult on yourself. Its just what I like to do. If you want to have a great, competitive game without the hard work. Put some assists on, set the AI to the lower end of Hard (this is as low as I would recommend) and just have fun.

F1 2015 was the first F1 game I bought and learned on, and in my opinion, 2017 would be a great starter as the cars drive that much better than 15 or 16. As mentioned, there is a difficulty slider you can adjust in increments of 1 which gives you great ability to tailor the difficulty to your level. I play on a T80 and like it, plus I didn't want to spend a lot on a wheel. If you want force feedback, get the 150 at minimum.

The game offers various assists you can use, such as traction control, braking, auto gears, racing line, ect. My advice is never turn any of them on and learn from the start without them. You will be better off and have a more rewarding experience learning how to properly drive the cars without assists. Of course, it is easier to learn to drive assist free with a wheel/pedals than it is with a controller. It will probably be frustrating when you first get started, but once you get the hang of it, you will have a lot of fun.

Patch 1.05 is out. Supposed to have tweaked the wear on parts to not be so bad on 25% & 50% races.
