Re: Gran Turismo 7 Review - A Legacy of Love on Display

I've been play Gran Turismo since the first version on the OG Playstation. GT has always had robotic Ridge Racer type AI except that would be an insult to Ridge Racer.

FINALLY, you can actually race and have a competitive good time in GT7. Racing the AI on the Italian Maggiore is just a blast. I dialed up the AI to HARD and they were really racy especially into the corners. As most racing sims such as Assestto Corsa and others have AI that tend to brake early and slow down into the corners where it becomes too easy to predict and as such, you can start climbing the leaderboard.

In GT7 the AI is pretty damn good in not trying to punt you out of the way. I've passed cars only to be passed by the same car. The AI would try the outside, then it would try the inside but never to the point that if you were side by side would they slam into you as in previous iterations. And this is just Polyphony Digital's AI 1.0 so what will it look like with their highly anticipated Sophy AI?

The replays in 4K look absolutely stunning. It really is a beautiful game to behold. Maybe Forza 8 will trump this? Who knows but for me what sets Gran Turismo apart from all other racers including sim games, is the driving model. How, the lateral weight transfer going into and out of corners uses believable physics to cause the car to go wide depending on how fast you are going and the level of input required to keep the car from sliding off track as you fight the weight transfer physics. To this day, no driving or racing game has nailed what it's like to drive a virtual car, not Assetto Corsa, Project Cars 1&2 or Forza Motorsports. And i'm not throwing shade on AC, ACC or any of the other racing games because I have purchased them all.

I'm not implying that Gran Turismo driving model is perfect but it represents how a car at high speed should or might react when throwing into and out of corners as the lateral weight and inertia shifts from one side of the car to the other.

The other thing FINALLY fixed in Gran Turismo is the SENSE OF SPEED....Finally! You actually sense that you are driving at HIGH speeds rather than in the past where 110MPH, felt like 50MPH.

But hot damn, for the first time, I can actually race the AI and have competitive fun.

Kind of depends on the car. In my GT-R v spec I don't really feel the speed as much. That car controls so well with the 4WD that I always feel like I have total control of her.

But I did that menu book to collect Porsches and in one of those races there's a lengthy downhill straight with a gentle chicane at the end and I let off the gas cause I definitely felt the speed and thought the car was about to fly off the track. I could feel control slipping.

Speaking of my GT-R, I'm proud of this last second pass to grab the lead going into the final lap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPLQg6FqTXY

Anyway after quickly getting booted back to DR level D (after only 3 races) earlier this month. I've made it back to DR level C. I think I'm going to ease on Sport mode until i can get more consistency in my laps. I think that's been my biggest problem so far but could manage by capitalizing on others mistakes and a bit of luck. I also noticed that going against D level drivers being about 6-10 seconds off top leaderboard times still got me in a good spot to finish in the top half. At 10 seconds off, going against C level drivers puts me a bit too far off the pace.

Roulette tickets are still BS and I want more daily races options. The penalty/ghost system still needs some work, not holding my breath though. Also it's annoying that they're is a meta car, stupid Atenza, so many cool cars to drive and people just drive same thing. I beat many an Atenza with my Evo or Megane Trophy so clearly it's more about skill or lack there of than car.

All in all I am still enjoying it, going to try and "git gudder" and might revisit the wheel purchase in another month or two.

Edit: Okay. Reconsidered it and went and bought a wheel anyway. Slept on it, woke up and played some GT with the motion controls and just the feeling with that was so immersive and felt good. I can only imagine how it will be with a wheel and pedals. Also thinking about it I play more racing games than I realize. Started playing F1 again, still a fan of Dirt 5, and Rally 2.0 so at the very least I'll get enough use out of it for it to be worth the money.

Nice, which wheel did you get? I was looking at budget wheels like the Thrustmaster T80 but with no force feedback, I don't know if the $100 is even really worth it. Might as well put that $100 towards a wheel with the feedback, but paying $300 and up for a wheel is kinda hard for me to do.

I ended up getting a Logitech G29. I know there's a newer model but after reading a lot of reviews and watching YouTube reviews they seem almost identical. The two things that kept coming up are it's hard to press the last 25% or so of the break and that it can be a bit loud sometimes. Both issues also have adjustments that can be made to easily remedy those things though.

I got a Logitech G29 a couple of weeks ago. Having a blast playing GT and Nascar Heat 5.

One drawback I'm noticing after races on Heat, my inner left wrist is hella sore after turning left lmao. I don't know if I am going to be that extra and get a wrist brace or something

Tried my first online race a few days ago and ugh I did not do well. I'm not sure if it was due to being put in a different car or latency but I could not keep a line for nothing. Made me run back to offline with my tail between my legs for a bit.

LOL yeah get the brace man. For sure when I do get a wheel I will be buying some "racing" gloves to go with it. No helmet though lol.

I'm new to the world of sim racing and setups, but my biggest gripes with the G29 is the placement of the options/start button and that there is nothing to mimic the functionality of the right analog stick.

Yea this is why I just keep my controller close when navigating the menus.

You guys are going to really enjoy the wheels once you get used to them. A good mod or upgrade in the pedals will make a big difference. When I did the conical washer mod to my Thrustmaster T3PA pedals years ago that was a game changer.

That being said I've got the Thrustmaster T-LCM load cell pedals that should arrive at the house today.

Did my first online races last night. Finished 1st and 3rd in race A and 1st in Race B. Took another win in Race B this morning. Looking forward to getting the rating up and being humbled though. I'm quite a bit quicker than most where I'm at now but a reality check will come soon enough. [emoji869][emoji869]

Got my wheel setup. Last night. It's going to take some getting used to but so far I'm liking it. Making turns is just so much more responsive with the wheel. Coming out of corners and hitting that line perfectly is just so good, on the controller I probably would have went wide but the wheel is spot on. Tried a few tracks and vehicles to test, driving at high speed through tricky chicanes just feels so natural.

Up to B driver rating and S safety rating. Had won about 8-10 races in a row starting from pole in all up until this morning. All in daily race B. I just enjoy those cars the most.

First race this morning started 2nd and had a pretty lonely race there. The guy in 1st had a couple tenths a lap on me and with the rolling starts being so spread out its tough to put any real pressure on someone without a mistake I got it to under a second at one point but he had really good pace up the hill through the esses.

Second race was quite a bit of fun. Started 4th and moved up to 3rd after a spin and managed to catch 2nd place at the end of the final lap where he made a mistake entering the final turn. I got a good run and just beat him to the line to take 2nd.

My quali time is a 2:04.8 and race pace has been low to mid 2:06's. Did a little practice after watching the top time replay which is a ridiculous 2:02.1 lol. Found a few tenths after watching that so hopefully that will get my race pace into the 2:05's.

Questions since I'm new to driving with a wheel.
                            - When reversing or sometimes after spinning out the wheel just starts vibrating like mad. I can be moving straight and on flat tarmac. Is it the wheel in general (G29), my wheel specifically or a GT problem. I don't recall that happening when testing it playing F1.
                            - Think there is any chance they add more options to steering wheel settings. The other games I've tested it on have way more options to dial in/back vibrations and feedback. Honestly beside the torque physically turning the wheel, I don't need a lot of vibration or feedback on curbs and wheel slip. I can tell most of that visually and through audio cues.
                            - Do other wheels have settings that can be adjusted independently of the game regarding such ffb and vibrations.
                            - Any general tips for someone new to racing with a wheel, outside of just practice, practice, practice.

I don't regret getting a wheel (yet) when it's good it's really good. It's just being new to wheels I don't know if I'm a victim of old tech (g29) and playing on GT 7, a defective wheel or poor implementation by Polyphony.

Nah nothing wrong with the wheel. My Thrustmaster does the same thing on GT 7.

There are a lot of things lacking option wise in GT7. I'd rather run cockpit view when driving but the FOV is so bad in some cars and can't be adjusted. At least that I'm aware of.

You can 100% change the FOV in cockpit. It’s not a massive difference and may not really be much of a help, but it’s definitely possible. While in a race go to display settings. I typically change it for almost every car.
