This is so stupid. I'm glad I got the 60 GB version earlier this week (last one at the store!). 60 GB is still a lot of room and 80 GB isn't that much bigger but $100 sure is. They need to get and keep the price down if they really want to add market share. The $100 price drop got a lot of fence sitters to go out and buy a PS3 and I expect Sony will see a big sale number this month only to see it go back to being pathetic at $599. Utterly stupid of Sony imo.

It's actually pretty damn smart. Get all this huge press about the price drop... then quietly announce the cheaper model is being phased out.

Who knows how it will work for them... but that's pretty damn slick.

Same here. I was on the fence between waiting for my 360 to be repaired or buying it now and selling the 360 when I got it back. I chose to buy it now in case the stores ran out. I'm glad I did. Now if Tuesday can only get here so I can get NCAA...

Stuff like that is just shady. Then business wonder why people don't trust them anymore.

IMO, they would be better having said we are lowering the price of the 60GB PS3 as we phase it out of production. They would probably get more people to buy right away before the 60GB were gone and wouldn't look like they were trying to pull the wool over people's eyes.

Sometimes businesses outsmart themselves. Your better off just being upfront from the beginning. Now they seem like they were trying to be tricky.

I found this nugget on another fourm, an interview with Kaz Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment..

at around 1:40 in the video, he says:

"Well, again, just from a hardware perspective, the 499 dollar price adjustment that we did for the 60 GB version, for the American market, we're no longer in production for that product, so once that product is gone from the retailer shelves, then we're back to the $599 SKU only, so it's not like we have a two price strategy here in the US market. We found out very early on, you know, consumers react mostly to just having one SKU as opposed to two."


He clearly says that production has ceased for the 60 gig model, and when its gone they will be at the $599 price only. The article on joystiq didn't deny that they stopped producing them, but instead kinda said that the PS3 is selling better in europe than in the US.
