Re: Official PS3 Discussion Part III...

Anyone run into this problem that can help me out:

My PS3 will turn on, play DVDs, Netflix, etc., but when I try to play a game it makes a slight ticking sound after a few seconds and then it sounds like it is shifting the disc around. Then nothing. I've tried multiple games with same results. Anybody have this problem? I'm past the warranty unfortunately.

Have you tried a blu ray? I wonder if the blu ray player might be going out. Just a guess.

This might be a stupid question, but did you change the input source on your television from HDMI to Composite? Remember, the red/white/yellow cables are actually composite and not component, unless you really mean component and you have the RGB cables, in which case your input source should be set to Component.

Yeah I figured it out. I kept trying to reset the system on the TV that wasn't working. I looked it up and found out I had to hook it up with the HDMI, then reset the system and decline using the HDMI. Everything is up and running now. Thanks though.

so yeah, my ps3 is crapping out all day today. I've tried reading a bit about if there are any fixes i can do at home before going out and buying a new one but i'm not sure.
It's the fat ps3, not sure exactly what model it is and all that but it's from 2007. It once had the YLOD in 2009 and was repaired for free by Sony. It's one of the older models that plays a lot of the ps2 games.

Now here is what's going on. I turn it on, it lasts about 30 seconds to 1 minute, then starts to freeze. I can hear the sound start getting distorted, then the system locks up, shuts itself off and im left with the red light flashing. I've given it hours to rest, it's not in an enclosed space, tried unplugging everything and plugging it all back in, all those things.

I'm guessing i'm SOL outside of having it professionally repaired with my coin thusly making me just buy a newer slim model?

Pretty much this. It's history. Sending it in to sony will cost you $170.00+.

any difference then in any of the slimmer models besides just HD space? Any one of them have more features or backwards compartible than the others?

Also, if anyone knows a good place with great ps3 package deals by all means, let me know.

HD space is the only differences. They're all basically the same. Check the newly stickied gaming deals thread there may be something in there.

Ruh roh...I would be backing up my stuff ASAP - that's definitely one of the precursors to the YLOD. Especially since it's a 60 - those things are time bombs at this point.

YLOD just happened to me, I'm about to fix this manually by cleaning it out, thermal paste etc. Has anyone fixed theirs manually? I have an old 20GB because of hardware backwards compatibility. I really don't want to spend more money on a new one

My PS3(old 40 GB) keeps overheating and freezing. I never really played it for long periods of time and for the last couple of months I probably played it twice a week. For the last month I havent been able to play any game, but I am still able to watch movies, websurf, and listen to music. I really dont want to buy a new one
