Nope you get a error code the only files u can play without being connected to x-Live is .wmv and i think mpeg.

wow - came close to making a mistake; thx. So there's nothing in the pipeline for possible BC on the 40gb model? The 80gb model would be kinda overkill for me

they took it out of the 40 gig to rapidly cut production costs. The 40 gig is fine for me, as BC isn't important to me. I only played 2 old xbox games on my 360. I don't know if they could ever offer old playstation 2 games off PSN like the 360 does with xbox games though..

I'm taking the plunge next month and you're telling me that I can only play PS1 games BC on the PS3 but not PS2 games?


I just refuse to pay 5-600 dollars for a gaming system.

I will. For the most part the few games they do have don't impress me, and im not really that big of a baseball fan, so the show means nothing to me.

I'd like to be able to watch some good movies and play a few games here and there.

The DVD upscaler in the PS3 is second to none. I was watching Family guy last night (on DVD) and it reminded me just how spectacular it is.

I'm not mad at that. Actually my wife is buying it for me so I guess I shouldnt worry about price so much since she shops all year long.

Thinking of also getting another LCD TV bigger than the one on my PC with HDMI but I kinda feel like its overkill since i have 3 hdtv's but my living room TV is a rear projection w/no HDMI.

Decisions, ugh...

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to showing her the movie player and how much nicer it looks, and I haven't seen any upscaled movies so that intrigues me as well.

It's nothing spectacular... it doesn't really make your DVD's look better on a big screen... it just keeps them on par with what they would look like on a standard television. Otherwise, they would look like complete and utter garbage.

Think of standard TV on your HDTV sets... it looks really bad... but back when you had a SDTV it didn't look as bad.
