Some of them are FAT32 by default, if so then you won't need to format it. Otherwise, just connect it to your PC, then it will show up in My Computer. Just rigt click on the drive and select Format. Then I believe the default setting is for FAT32, if not, change it and format it.

You can't connect a NTFS drive to the PS3? Right now I'm streaming via the media center, so don't really care that much, but I'd like to know just for the future (if I ever want to move my external to the living room or something).

Here is my problem, I have movies on my PC that I want to watch on my TV through the PS3, thus avoiding the long task of burning. I have tried to transfer and the PS3 consistently doesnt recognize that there is a movie there, here is what Im doing...In terms of folders, I have PS3/MOVIES and Ive also tried using VIDEO instead of movies but neither time did it actually recognize that there was a movie there to watch, the only way I could get it was to press triangle and click on display all and then find the file myself and play it that way. How can I get the PS3 to recognize the movie itself without me having to do it myself?

Secondly, Ive given thought about streaming the movie from my laptop, is there a quality difference between doing that and just copying it to a thumb drive and plugging it into the PS3 itself? Lastly, stupid question Im sure, but is there any safety risk associated with sharing things over your network? Thanks in advance.

I too was having this problem, what I do now for all my movies/videos is burn as a data Dvd with Nero and place it into the ps3. Go to the video column and select the data Dvd, the files should now show up accordingly. You then click ok to make sure the file is compatible and can be played on the ps3. Once the video plays you can stop playback and hit the triangle button on the controller to copy multiple video files at once or individually. Finally, I always use a RW Dvd for this just in case you make a mistake, you can always try again. Hope this helps.

Anyone know a way to clean the fan on the PS3? I have a 60gb and I've noticed that over the past few weeks, my fan has gotten considerably louder when I play. I used to hardly hear it until I had played for at least and hour or so. Now it comes on after about 5 minutes of play and is fairly loud (for the PS3 anyway.....sounds nothing like 360 though). I've read that dust on the fan can cause the increase in noise and fan speed and since I've had mine for 1 1/2 years, I figure that it's got to be fairly dusty.

Anyone care to offer some advice here? Also, what do you guys have your system setting on? I have mine on a monitor stand that sits in my floor so there is plenty of opening around the sides and back of it for circulation. I've heard sitting it on the carpet isn't good for it. Do you think my monitor stand is a good place for it? I haven't really seen or heard anyone else talking about setting their's on one of those but I saw it at Wal-Mart one day and thought it was a good idea. Thanks.

Nope, the PS3 doesn't recognize NTFS.

For the multi console owners, neither does the 360. I'm more surprised about that considering it's MS' console.

Thanks for the suggestion, Im just streaming them now from Windows Media Player straight to the console, and its working fine. The problem with burning is it takes 3 hours or so because it has to encode it so Im trying to avoid burning it, streaming it works and putting it on the thumb drive works as well you just have to access it, click triangle to show everything and then click on the movie/file you want to access.

Do a search on youtube.com, a guy showed how to do it but I dont remember how. There is a thead here about a PS3 error code that I believe also has the link to the video, if I find it I will edit it here and post it.

EDIT- I found it but its only for 40GB systems they say, it wont hurt to try it I guess but other then that I could only suggest you either do a search on yourtube.com and google otherwise call Sony and see what they say, here is the link...

Ok, Im having a slight problem and cant seem to figure out how to fix it. Im streaming movies from my laptop to my PS3 and watching them that way, I can watch it for different amounts of time but sooner or later I get error code 80710723, some sort of network error. I dont get this when downloading any updates but I dont play online so I cant say if it happens there or not. Ive been told to go in and place my PS3 into the DMZ zone and it will keep a static IP thus not changing and not losing connection with the laptop, but wouldnt I then have to do the same thing with my laptop? According to the Comcast agent, the laptops IP address may change periodically and this would cause the same problem Im getting now anyways, but at the same time Im not sure if he is bs'ing me or not so I figured someone here would have a better idea. If anyone can help me out that would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT- I take it either this was ignored or nobody had the answer. Its easier at this point to just put it on my thumb drive and plug that into the PS3, just would have been nice to stream it to my PS3 and watch it that way, I can always burn it to the PS3 but that takes awhile where as it takes me 2-3 minutes to stick it on my thumb drive and be done with it.

So if we have an NFTS drive our only option is to copy the files onto a flash drive then plug that in and copy it to the ps3 hard drive? When I plug my flash drive in it will automatically recognize it correct?

Well, an NTFS drive won't be read in any console... If you have a powerful program like PartitionMagic you can go back to Fat32, despite many claiming you can't.

As long as your flash drive is Fat32 you'll be ok.
