speaking of HDMI ... anyone having sound issues with their cable? i just bought the MGS4 bundle last week and everything worked perfectly for the first few days -- ps3 games and blu-ray discs.

tonight i went out and got the spiderman trilogy box on blu-ray, toss one in and there was no sound. video was fine though. tried all the simple stuff... plugging/unplugging it, resetting the video and audio settings, etc. nothing seemed to work. wasn't the port, because i tried using a different one and no dice. luckily i had an old set of component cables from my ps2 so i could keep things in HD, but the blu-ray's playing in 1080i instead of 1080p.

but i digress. anyone else have a similar problem with ps3/HDMI? wasn't there a web site that sells HDMI cables for cheap -- would it be worth it to order one of those? just very strange because i didn't touch anything and it had been working fine until just now.

Why would you want 5 thick cables when you can have one single cable? There you go...not overrated at all IMO.

Maybe it's a case of to each his own. I've always been pretty good with keeping cords and stuff organized. I'm not one to order much online. So, I'm content with paying $20 for five cords of a high def component connection vs. $80-100 for HDMI or finding a deal online.

I just don't see the love affair with HDMI.

Although, come to think of it, the HDMI cable I got for my DirecTV receiver was about $20 at Wal-Mart. Can you basically use any kind of HDMI cable on the PS3?!

just straight into the TV. no receivers or sound systems if that's what you mean. thanks for the site address -- i thought it was monosource.com for some reason.

damned annoying that i just bought the thing on thursday and the sound would just cut out like that. hopefully it's just the cable...

Yeah. I got mine at Best Buy for $20 or $25, and it's worked fine for the year and a half that I've had my PS3. If it's any less quality than the cables that someone else is using, no one that I know has noticed any difference.

Don't waste 20 bucks on a HDMI cable...You can get one shipped for like $7 from monoprices.com

Someone correct me if Im wrong but other then the 1080i vs 1080p being the difference between HDMI and Component isnt the other major difference the inability to upscale SD-DVD to near HD quality? Im going off of memory and its been awhile so I could be completely off base here but I thought those were the two major differences.

Correct...you cannot upscale SD-DVD's using component, only HDMI can support that (due to encryption and stuff like that)...that's a good reason to use HDMI IMO

Component can support it as well. I have an older Panasonic DVD player that will upconvert over component. However, movie studios now require that upconversion only happen in the digital domain due to HDCP so they can prevent piracy.

No wonder you dislike HDMI if you are thinking they are in the $80-$100 range vs. $20 for component. Yes you can use any HDMI cable with the PS3. If you're paying more than $10 for an HDMI cable you're paying too much. www.monoprice.com is your friend.

Sony Europe is axing games left and right this month.

I liked the first but I see where it doesn't make sense to make this with GOW 3 but still. The first one sold pretty well from what I remember.
