SONY = idiots. Nothing wrong with bringing the PS2 down in price, but the PS3 and even PSP could have used a drop in price.

It's sad when people get excited about a game coming over that they have no interest in even playing.

Sony isn't dumb, they know the PS3 needs a price drop, but it's obvious they simply can't afford to do so. The goal is to start turning a profit with the PS3, dropping the price is only going to prolong that goal.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but Sony is going through some tough times, just like every other company.

To stem continued losses, Sony said Thursday there will be no pay increases for non-managerial employees this year.

Sony doesn't give automatic raises every year based on seniority--unlike many other Japanese companies--but instead awards them based on responsibility and performance, according to Reuters.

It's the first time Sony has ever made such a move, but the company's financial circumstances give it few options. Sony is predicting an operating loss of $2.9 billion for the current financial year ending March 31, the electronics giant's first annual loss in 14 years.

It has already resorted to closing several factories, laying off 16,000 full-time and contract workers, cutting salaries for managers, and trimming bonuses.

Sony is just one of many Japanese electronics companies that have been hurt by the global economic downturn and a stronger-than-expected yen.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the PS3 didn't exactly sell well before the economy crapped out...
I understand it makes it even worse now but IMO the whole PS3 experience as a whole wasn't thought out very well from the start.

Flawless, I am aware about the financial issues with Sony. My buddy and I have talked about it quite a bit and how they have laid off employees recently. I still feel that the Blu-ray implementation for PS3 in the short term has hurt the system due to price. If they do stick it out for the long haul as they promise, then this was a good choice to some regards.

How much are they losing per console now or are they yet breaking even?

That's true and it's why Kuturagi-san is no longer with the company. Retiring is nice way of saying he was fired.

By the way, at my local FYE, they've been selling the PS2 for $129.99 with a $30 mail-in rebate forever, so for me, this is amazingly anti-climatic.
