The hd is encrypted and mated to the system it resides on. If your system goes down, your data goes down with it. The only way to get it back, until someone defeats the encryption, is to get that same system up and running again and then do a backup. It will ask to reformat if you put it in a new system.

Sony will charge you $150 to get back a refurbished one with your data gone. There are shops that can fix it for less, albeit temporary, and give you a chance to back your data up before it goes down again.

There is no way I'm paying $ 150.00 to get some dirty refurb back with my HD wiped clean. Id rather just put that $ 150.00 towards a slim.

But know what can I do with the 60gig paper weight I have now ???

I guess I can bring the HD to a buddy's house and put it in his PS3 so I can at least wipe the HD clean (because it will ask me to reformat it right ??)

But then what ???

Sell the bricked 60 gig on craigslist ???

Does EB take in bricked systems ???

please dont!!! cuz thats what i did and guess what! its broke again

not even 1 damn week since i got it back. im still under warranty so they will fix it for free but then it will just mess up again.

OK, question for the PS3 Slim owners: is it normal for the back of the console to be hot? I noticed this today after playing for 2 hours or so. The top of the console was barely warm, the game disc wasn't warm at all but the back of the console was hot.

I guess it's probably b/c the air vent isn't that large in the back. I don't have the system elevated (it's on my entertainment center with plenty of ventilation), but if that helps, I will prop it up.

Mine gets very hot from the back, but the rest of the system is nice and cool. I think its normal + the newer slims now don't get as hot.

Seems to be the consensus. I have the 2000 model Slim. Like you said, other than the back, the rest of the system is cool.

Ok.....just picked up a 120 gig slim from walmart.


The serial number has CECH-2101A.

Is that a newer slim with the smaller, cooler chips ???

If you buy a Slim now, make sure it's a model number CECH-2101A as the 2100 series has the new 40 nm chips inside. The 2000 series is the old Slim with 65 nm.

Well, thats good at least.

Now, I have to find a way to get my stuff off the old 60 gig.

Ps: I just got off the phone with sony (in case this happens to anyone else and they want some info). It costs $ 149.99 for the repair plus $ 30.00 shipping, plus tax. The total repair was around $ 205.00. So buying a brand new slim instead was a no brainer.

You should be able to do a system to system backup with a firewire or USB cable or something. It's in the options somewhere. Sorry for not having better details.

But my ps3 cn't turn on. It has the YLOD. I've tried google to get some answers......but I think I'm basically out of luck. Unless someone here knows something that google doesn't. I want the pics, vids & game saves form the 60 gig.

picked up a new 2101A slim this morning!

finally my headaches are over.

took the 60gb back to the shop so they can fix it (for free), then transfer my saves and data to the slim. then sell that ***** to gamestop!

But my ps3 cn't turn on. It has the YLOD. I've tried google to get some answers......but I think I'm basically out of luck. Unless someone here knows something that google doesn't. I want the pics, vids & game saves form the 60 gig.

best thing u can do is is try to get it fixed locally (hopefully for a decent price) so u can be able to turn it on and save your pics, vids, and game saves to a flash drive. then u can sell it if u choose.

u could try to get a usb transfer kit its like 10 buck on ebay, prob same in radio shack.

I saw something like that on youtube. But the ps3 that has the YLOD has to be able to turn on.......
