Re: PS3 disc drive won't eject!

I don't know about this whole "lots of profit" nonsense, 360 repair is $120 (plus tag, so realistically closer to $130) on a console that costs $200 (for the arcade, that's all they are going to repair anyway) so it's not out of line with the industry.

Edit: And I've always left discs and cartridges in every device that had a slot for them.

I sleep to movies all of the time. Last night though I watched it all the way through in bed then just turned it off with my controller. Again, I do that all of the time too.

Plus, leaving it in or taking it out probably wouldn't have changed what ended up happening, I believe.

It's pretty obvious it's a mechanical failure, it likely hapopened when the disc was inserted.

            And that's the truth.

Okay, so let's go back to the drawing board:

Summer of 09: I'm buying individual acoustic versions of songs on iTunes, one of them being Theory of a Deadman - By the Way. Because I'm interested in playing these songs on my PS3, I put them all on my external HDD. As I copy over By the Way, my XP locks up where the folder isn't responding and what not. I close it, and try to play the song on my PS3. Every time I attempt to play it, my PS3 freezes halfway through the song. The file must be messed up, so I try to delete it. As I do, my external HDD starts whirring uncontrollably and my PS3 freezes. As I restart my PS3 and see if it deleted, my external HDD is no longer recognizable. Not on my PS3, not on my computer, nowhere. I lose everything, but say that it's okay because I have everything on my computer and my dad's computer back home.

One month into school year: I come back from my baseball game and turn on my computer. There's a blank desktop screen with the mouse cursor that shows up before the login screen as normal, but the login screen never shows up. I figure I've seen that before so I'll just restart the computer. Same thing happened. Restart, nothing... again and again. I try everything, then try and boot it in Safe mode. Still no dice. After much frustration and attempts for recovery, I buy one of those cables that make my HDD pretty much an external drive, getting my dad's laptop shipped to me so I have a computer to run it on. When I see my folders, all of the system32 files are wiped out (which was the problem) and my personal Documents and Settings folder, the one that has all of my data, is displayed as "Empty." I thought I had lost everything until someone showed me I could access them with Administrative privileges, but I still can't figure out how to fix my computer until I can recover my system32 files. I could restore my computer back to factory settings, but I would still have to back up all of my files, which I didn't have an external hard drive to do it with.

Sometime last week: My dad's laptop hits the fan, quite literally. Every time the fan seemed to want to kick on, it would chug and almost "click" in some ways. When I would close my laptop and put it to sleep in fear of the sounds, smoke would emit from the vents and out of the computer. When I went to take it to Fry's there seemed to be no problem with it and the fan was running. Later it did it one last time for me, and I thought it was back. It doesn't happen anymore, but that's because the fan is now broken. After a while if my computer is on for too long, it just starts going really slowly and I'll have to shut down the computer until it cools down and reboots. Thankfully my friend let me borrow his external HDD so I try and back up all of my music files, and I figured this would be a good time to finally get my 400GB HDD into my PS3, thus being able to put all of my music on there. Unfortunately my computer was too slow to convert all of my songs from M4A to MP3, so I had to use six school computers simultaneously to convert them with efficiency.

Yesterday: I wake up and simply try and eject the disc out of my PS3. The damn system can't get it out and makes loud grinding noises as it tries to. Once it stops, the disc is read as unrecognizable to the system, where I have to restart the system to recognize it again. Everything on the system actually works quite flawlessly as we speak, all except for being able to eject the disc. I can still play music on my HDD, go on the Internet, play my downloaded games and demos... hell, I can still even play the movie in the system (which I watched again last night because hey, what else am I going to watch?). But now I'm stuck having to shell out $150 for repair where I hope they can get me my disc back unharmed, hope they don't send me a refurbished PS3, and unsure whether I'll be here or at home when my system comes to me because of Thanksgiving break so I don't know where they should ship it to. Plus Black Friday is coming up and my mom said to wait and talk to my dad about it and see what I should do. This is tough though since I can only hold onto my friend's external HDD for so long with my backup information, and I don't want to play anything that will add more saves to my files so that I would have to re-backup everything again to keep updated, so I'm trying to not play any downloaded games.

The funniest thing about the last one was, two days ago, I made a plan to install Yellow Dog Linux on my PS3 as another OS in case something happens to this slow laptop if it becomes too dysfunctional. The problem is, you need to insert a CD as part of the install process... something that I can no longer do.

So, four hardware issues in less than three months. Ain't life just grand right now?

Hey Blz don't feel bad. I've gone through 3 cell phones, 4 ps3's, and a partridge in a pear tree just in the last 5 months. Technology these days.

Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me. A few weeks into the semester my phone broke. Literally vibrated itself off of a dresser and split the flip phone in two. I have no idea how that broke it, though the dresser was pretty high up I guess.

At least that one isn't unexplainable, though.

EDIT: And for the record, right now I'm typing on my PS3 because the laptop has already been worked too much, so it's shut down and cooling until it's actually functional again. So the PS3 Internet is the best I can do at this point. I can't play ****, but I can still browse I guess.

Blzer, you have the 60gb PS3? That sucks man, it just seems more and more of these are starting to act up. Mine has every so often been giving me a hazzy looking image. When I click the input for the HDMI on the receive it corrects itself and I don't think its a handshaking issue either. I tried 2 different cables and 2 different ports. I wonder if the HDMI port on the PS3 is acting up.

I don't have the 60GB, why do you ask? I'm guessing probably because you thought I didn't want a refurbished PS3 that wouldn't be BC, but I have a 40GB anyway so it doesn't matter. I just don't want a refurbished system, is all.

By the way, question for anyone who knows: does backing up my HDD back up my music and photos as well? I just wanted to know because I'm adding more music on my PS3 as we speak, but I don't want to have to re-backup everything just so those songs are on here again, I'd much rather copy them all straight from the external HDD that I'm using. Now some people may say "just copy them over again," but I don't want to find the individual albums and such that I'm copying over. I also don't want to have to overwrite everything else or accidentally make a bunch of duplicates and have to delete them.

                        Thanks.

I think I might just eject the game out now considering that if this thing gets stuck in there, I really don't want to send in for repairs since sometimes they send you a refurb in return.

If you use the Backup Utility on your PS3, it should back up EVERYTHING.

Refurbs aren't so bad if you get one that works! LOL

I have one (60gig) now that works wonderfully. My slim still out-paces it though.

That's extremely high. These repairs cost Sony very little money. It seems Sony is trying to make lots of profit with this.
You forgot to add another $25 to $30 for the shipping charges , so around $180 lol.
There is a way around it if your persistent enough as my 20 month old ps3 croaked last month .
I had to go thru 3 horrible reps reading from a warranty manual then he will mumble lowly its will be $150 plus shipping then ask for a higher up and youll eventually get a manager you can reason with and I told him how I only bought Sony ect and whys everyone have these ps3 issues .
Well the bottom line is we use our TV and CPU twice as much and they dont break under 2 years and whether its $1 or $180 you gotta make them accountable as it seems most ps3 die under 2 years .
Think of it this way do you Know how much money Sony is making off of this $175 BS when they already got your $400 to $600 .
My refurb works as well as my original so far plus a 90 warranty .
