Eh, like I said, I'm fine paying. Fifty dollars for how fantastic Live is is a cheap fee anyway... it's a little under a dollar a week. Hell, I'll bet half you guys spend that an hour on cigarettes

re: Playstation Plus - Premium PS3 Service

If Sony can continue to improve the PSN to the level of XBL I probably wouldn't mind paying for whatever it is they'll be charging for. Though I don't think I'd be very happy if they started charging in a similar manner to XBL with the state the PSN is in right now. The PSN is great as a free service, but it isn't in the same league as Live.

I would think that the biggest impact of Sony charging for PSN use will come in the next generation of consoles. If Microsoft's next console can maintain a respectable failure rate I may have a tough decision when it comes to purchasing a new console in a few years. If the PSN is no longer free and XBL is still head and shoulders above it, why would I buy the next console from Sony over Microsoft's? Aside from MLB The Show I can't really think of anything else that would keep me in Sony's camp.
      Now, more than ever

i bought a ps3 about a year ago on the fact that i can play for free if they start charging im going to be pissed. if they charge for early demos and stuff im fine with that because i hardly bother with demos any way but if they start charging for other features that has to do with playing online like party chat and stuff i might get annoyed but what can i do? if sony wants to charge us out the *** the same way microsoft does they can and will.

Well, Sony may have once downplayed the notion of "catching up" with Xbox Live, but it looks like it is now set to take at least one big cue from its rival. As oh-so-quietly revealed during a presentation on Thursday and now confirmed by Kaz Hirai himself, Sony will be adding a "premium level" subscription service to the PlayStation Network sometime next year. According to Hirai, that subscription will get you "premium content and services," although exactly what those are remains a bit unclear, as the current level of service will apparently remain free, and continue to include features like Facebook, Netflix, and the ability to play games online. Also up in the air is any word on a price or launch date, although the timing of the announcement does seem to suggest that we might just be hearing more about this at CES.
              Happy now?

Seems weird that we may have to pay a subscription fee to... purchase content.

seems like a xbox gold account to me but the good thing is online play will remain free.... and if people do like the new update which is suppose to be a massive one then you could pay for it....

If they'll offer more reliable servers (i.e. XBL) in this "premium level" subscription service, I'm all in.

well you also have to pay for the internet in the first place, but MS still found millions of people willing to pay a subscription for the ability to play with others over the internet. That's consumers for you.

I do agree that Sony has an obligation as a company to look at ways to make more money with their service, which may even eventually mean charging to play online with others. I just wonder if Sony can make PSN equal to Live without the kind of revenue Live provides. MS knows they have people paying subscriptions for the online play, yet they still go out of their way to add other social features to keep people happy. Plus, Live is more appealing to developers, since paying members are subsidizing a lot of the costs for things like demos and leaderboards.

It's all fun and games until you have to fork over $50 for an "expired" online account and another $65 for the game itself.

I kept my 360 but it's sitting there on a Silver account until I can justify paying to play online when I can do it for free on my PS3 or PC.

what they gonna do charge us for demos?

Depends on what area of a hooker you would use to redeem them.

I don't think they will, they know this is a major selling point that they have over Microsoft. That being said, if I could get the same great features and the same party system they have on Live, I wouldn't be incredibly pissed. I wouldn't be happy, but I wouldn't be popping off angry e-mails either.

I don't expect them to charge for online play this gen. I think they may do that next gen. I can see this gen maybe having a paid tear for things like early demo;s and beta keys.
