Another thing to consider. If you are on a HDTV and using the 360 as your DVD player, you can only get upconversion through HDMI or VGA cables. Upconversion isn't available on protected content like DVDs when using component cables.

Also, since everything except HDMI and DVI is analog, the quality of your cables do matter. The Microsoft VGA cable will be better than the cheap 3rd party cables you can get on ebay. With digital signals, it's all or nothing. $3 HDMI cables will work as well as $150 cables, etc

Do I plug S-Video cables in the same red, yellow, and white ports that I plug in A/V or composite cables?

The red and white for audio yes, but the s-video is a different connection entirely.

HDMI is a clear cut #1. Its a digital signal (little to no signal degredation) and is less wires. DVI would be it's only equivalent if looking at just video (doesn't carrry audio)

Agreed that you are splitting hairs between VGA and component...unless you are talking about upconverting.

Re: HDMI Or Component Cables For XBOX 360?

Any effects of signal degradation are going to be unnoticeable and not a concern unless running very long lengths. As far as strictly video quality is concerned, there really is no clear cut #1, it's going to come down to the devices themselves (a lot of piss-poor HDMI implementations out there) and personal opinion.

HDMI is clearly the most convenient, and there's little reason not to make use of it if the opportunity is there.

Re: HDMI Or Component Cables For XBOX 360?

HDMI is much better. I just brought a small TV (22") that I use to game on and as a PC monitor. Decided it would be nice to not hog the big screen from the girl all the time and I didn't want to go up to the TV in the room to play. 22" isn't bad to play on at all if your playing at the distance you would use a PC monitor about 18-24". I just got a 5.1 surround sound headset to use with it and messed with my setup a couple different ways. The componet definately looked much worse than the HDMI I was use to playing.

Rawdeal, i'd do a search for the Pelican component cables. or maybe check out your local walmart store:

They are a deactivated item from what i've read but you should still find them some places for $15-17.

just to throw my two cents in here, Best Buy's Insignia brand is a decent choice also. Decent prices and Consumer reports has recommended many of their models as a good buy. We bought one for our bedroom and it has an outstanding picture and good blacks.

Go to the store to look at the sizes in person so you get a good idea at what looks best.

I have my 360 hooked up via component cables and it looks great to me.

Re: HDMI Or Component Cables For XBOX 360?

I don't have an HDMI or VGA input on my Xbox 360 (mine was made back in March 2007), so I'm stuck with component cables. They look good enough to me, anyways.

I have a 23" Samsung p2370HD 1080p LCD TV. It's kind of small, but it's just in the computer room where I usually watch the TV within 10 feet away and oftentimes while I'm on the computer (which is very close to my TV), so I didn't want a huge TV. The 23" TV is replacing a 25" SDTV.

I just got it recently and I'm very pleased. I've never had an HDTV before, so it looks great to me.

If you're pleased stick with it...for VGA though you have to buy the VGA cables, no 360 has a VGA in the system...

I was about to ask...hows are best buy's Insignia and Dynex brands for HDTVs? I actually own a Dynex SDTV. They are ofcourse cheaper, so they are very appealing, but since its cheaper, are they worse off? I went to best buy and 22 is too small. I think thats the size of my PC monitor. 26" looked like a good size. 32" is too expensive. I'm a college student, so I just want something to fit in my dorm room and room at home.

No it is not. There is only a minimal difference, if any, in terms of video quality and HDMI has better quality with audio. The convenience of HDMI is the big advantage.

There are disadvantages to HDMI as well, but that's not relevant in this thread.
