Better console 4 sports games only: 360 or PS3?

For sports games like Madden 11, NBA 2K11, NHL 11, etc.

    I don't play online FYI.

Which gaming system delivers better/sharper graphics? I have a 1080P LCD HDTV.

I've read/heard that PS3 video has 'jaggies' and that the Xbox 360 color and graphics are better since the games are made for the 360 (and ported over to the PS3).

For those who have BOTH systems, please advice.

    Thanks.

i dont have both systems but I am in the same boat as you (as far as needing to make a decision on this).

I've played nba2k10 and all maddens on both and it always looks better on 360. I keep the ps3 for the show, but if you have neither system and don't care about baseball, i say go with the 360.

I think I am going to buy a 360 soon for the non-exclusive titles: mlb2k, nba2k, madden, tiger, ncaa, f1, etc.

    Hope that helps.

The "Colors" on the 360 in Madden, NCAA, and Tiger are bright. Its like someone turned the color contrast up to 100% where as the PS3 games look sort of muted. People like myself prefer the sort of muted look since it has a more natural look.

You can see the "Jaggies" a bit more in the PS3 versions of Madden, NCAA, and NBA Live/Elite. Tiger Words and NHL, appear the same to me on both systems.

MLB The Show is such a good game that it's hard to go with a 360 when you have that baseball game in the marketplace.

Some of the PS3 versions run in 1080p and others don't. All of the 360 versions will run in 1080p decently even if they are 720p native since the 360 has a built in scaler where as the PS3 does not (stupid idea).

I spent a lot of years playing sports games on the PS1 and PS2. The PS3 pad still feels more natural for me when I'm playing sports game. However, Racing Games and Shooters I prefer on the 360 controller.

As for the PS3 controller, there are these little plastic triggers you can get for the PS3 http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/Prod...017&affid=9797 That are very cool and work very nicely to make racing games a lot more tolerable on the PS3.

Offline Roster Sharing is a heck of a lot easier to do with the PS3, if that's something you're into.

I'd say, go to gamestop or best buy and mess around with the PS3 pad and then do the same thing with the 360 pad. Which ever one feels better to you then lean towards that system. Since offline is your main way of gaming, then head to the PS3 IF roster sharing is something you are into. If you want slightly better visuals on just a few of the games, then go to the 360. If baseball is a major sport for you, then the PS3.

      *chuckles*

I love all my systems and am lucky to own all 3 current. If I had had to choose 1 strictly on offline and sports games I'd take the PS3 over the 360 since I really liked the PS Pad for sports. The main reason I have kept my 360 (I'm on my 4th system which still errks me) is that they have a lot of awesome download games via XBLA that PSN doesn't have and won't have.

      I hope this helps.

If you are a baseball fan, go with the PS3.

Since you aren't going to be playing online, I still may go with the PS3. You'd have to pay for XBL to get a lot of the features like roster downloads and what not. PS3 you won't.

If you decide to end up playing online, obviously PS3 is a good choice, otherwise go with whichever one your friends have.

like above, if you play offline and are a huge baseball fan get a ps3 just for the show.

if not, then go with the 360, bc all of the games for some reason just look crisper.

but all in all, its up to you.

Re: Better console 4 sports games only: 360 or PS3?

Thanks for all the helpful replies folks. I do not play MLB games, so that's not even a factor.

I don't mind paying for XBL membership (can be purchased at a discount at many online retailers, auction sites).

Also I'm comfortable w/ both controllers, so that doesn't really matter as well.

My main concern is graphics/video quality.

Does the 360 have a significant advantage over the PS3 in that department (as related to non-exclusive sports titles)....or is it a case of slight improvements?

              Thanks again.

The 360 does have a better video card IMO.

I wouldn't say significant at all, but 360 generally has a slight IQ advantage. I'm not sure why people mention better colors on 360 though, because you can achieve the same results on PS3 through your TV settings or full RGB (if your TV supports it). The two consoles output video differently with the PS3 actually being the more natural. I've started getting more multiplatform games on PS3 since I have people I know personally that have switched over. This year is the first I got NCAA and Madden on PS3, and while not a huge deal, the frame rate hitches at times are kind of annoying.

I've never once had slowdown for either of those titles on PS3? Are you talking about in-game?

Yes, in-game. I've noticed it mostly during passing plays, especially post patterns over the middle, or with the kick meter if you try and kick before the camera centers. It lasts for no more than a second, and rarely has effected the outcome of a play. I might try 720p later to see if this eliminates it, but again, it's not really that big of deal.

Honestly there is small hitches/frame rate drops in the 360 as well. Not bad but it's evident on long passing plays with a bunch of players jumping for the ball.

Anyway, EA doesn't port over. They build both games side by side. Can't speak for 2K but based on their previous games it sure looks like they port or aren't just familiar with the PS3 tech yet. Either way it looks like 2K is getting better with the PS3 support as they're doing 3D and the Move for the PS3 so hopefully that means the graphics improve as well.

Usually the biggest difference you will find between the two systems for sports games is anti-aliasing. The 360 has eDRAM which is a chip that takes care of the AA while the PS3 doesn't. PS3 can do the same anti-aliasing but the game code has to include whereas the 360 is like an on/off switch. Bottom like is developers are getting better, EA games have slight if any differences from what I've seen between Madden 11 and NCAA 11. Might look slightly smoother on the 360 but you won't be disappointed or even notice unless you play both side by side.

Do you like baseball? If yes, then PS3.

Still, if you aren't playing online, then PS3. That way you can still get stuff like rosters (I think you need gold to get online roster updates) without paying the gold fee.
