          Kaz Hirai on the NGP

          <object classid="clsid<param name="movie" value="http://www.viddler.com/simple_on_site/8927a10c" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="flashvars" value="fake=1"/><embed src="http://www.viddler.com/simple_on_site/8927a10c" width="437" height="265" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="always" allowFullScreen="true" flashvars="fake=1" name="viddler" ></embed></object>

The day we announced the Next Generation Portable, or NGP, was quite an eventful one. You might have followed the live blog, read the message on the Blog from SCEA CEO Jack Tretton, seen the topics trending on Twitter (6 out of 10 worldwide at one point!), or read the hands-on impressions.

At the very end of the day, I had a chance to catch up with Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. While I knew I’d be unable to gather any more details than what was announced earlier in the day, I was curious about the broader aspects of the news: Why announce NGP now? Where does it fit into the PlayStation console life cycle philosophy? How did publishing partners like **** Games and Activision get involved in the announcement? I hope you enjoy hearing these answers in detail directly from Mr. Hirai.

True, but one take is Nintendo would just lower their price, because they have markups like that of Apple, and allow themselves that "wiggle room".

Not to mention Nintendo did not release the price even after all their show offs until not too long ago.

Besides, that **** dont cost a dollar!

A Gamestop employee said that to me the other day when I asked about the possible cost. Now I know where he ripped it off from.

I don't know about you guys but news like this makes me very happy.

Sony suspends PS4 plans for the time being to focus on NGP.

                2 things come to mind.

                1. I'm not ready for the PS4 anyway. I'm loving my PS3 and everything it does right now. MLB.TV/Netflix/Movies/Games. I'm just hitting my stride with it.

                2. The PSP would have been more successful had it had more support from sony. As it was though the major focus was the PS3 and therefore the psp got lost in the shuffle. There were a few terrible years for the psp where no games were coming or even worth getting. With full total focus by sony on the NGP the possibilites could be endless.

This is good news. Like you said, I'm very happy with my PS3 and really haven't even begun thinking about the next generation of consoles.

I literally dread the day we start seeing new console talk right now. I would be just fine with my PS3 through 2015/2016, especially if Sony can take full advantage of PS3/PSP2 interconnectivity.

I agree. I'm not anywhere near being ready for a new playstation but I am ready to upgrade my original PSP.

$250 with Wi-Fi? Sold! (If it's true, of course...)

3G on my phone never really works that great on any kind of streaming media around here anyway...

Wow. I'd be all over that price.

I think Sony has learned from their pricing mistake when the PS3 first launched. They realized how much better it sold when they finally dropped the price to $299 with the release of the Slim so I guess they decided to not make the same mistake twice.

Actually, since I have the wireless hotspot for my android phone, I don't even NEED the 3G NGP model to connect anywhere. Just give me the wi-fi model, turn on the phone's hotspot, and win (and save $100 if that price is to be believed).
