Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified -- Be Skeptical

IGN’s Mitch Dyer saw Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified’s multiplayer at Gamescom and called it “disappointing.” Having finally had a chance to try it for myself, it makes me sad to say that those initial impressions mirror my own. It isn’t even bad or unlikable in its current, pre-release state, but a number of technical limitations make it feel far from the Call of Duty console-like experience on a handheld.

When it comes to Call of Duty controls are everything, and at this point Declassified’s feel a bit wanting. Firing and aiming down the iron sights logically uses the shoulder buttons, but because the Vita lacks secondary triggers, you have to rely on the touchscreen for melee strikes and throwing grenades. This becomes an issue within seconds, as using either grenades or melee attacks means you have to take your hands away off one of the sticks. Moreover, the far-right placement of the on-screen grenade buttons means that it isn’t uncommon to accidentally bump them when using the right analog stick. Because you can’t click the analog sticks this also means that sprinting is either turned on automatically by running forward (which takes some getting used to, and makes me feel a bit out of control), or by pressing down on the D-pad (which, again, requires me to take my thumb off the analog stick). The most basic act of shooting and aiming feels better on Vita than it has on any previous portable CoD game I’ve played, but the current control schemes, and the slower, 30 FPS, don’t quite capture the speed and intensity of the franchise in its entirety.
Nihilistic did a terrible job on the Resistance BS multiplayer imo, but the single player campaign was enjoyable. I can see what this guy is complaining about.

Some of these complaints (same with Resistance) are just unfair IMO. The Vita doesn't have as many buttons, so compromises have to be made. Yes, it can promise a "console-like" experience, but expectations still need to be adjusted accordingly.

This has been my initial worry all along. No R2/R3/L2/L3 makes FPS games very worrisome in my eyes. It's not the developer's fault, it's just a Vita limitation... and a very unfortunate one, if you ask me.

I could do away without the extra shoulder buttons, but I wonder why the sticks couldn't be made clickable.

I don't like the sound of 30 FPS though. They said they were going to try and capture COD in its true essence, and 60 FPS is actually one of the four major things that IW said separated them from the rest for the FPS genre (I think Treyarch would agree).

The SP campaign of Resistance was great imo, but I just felt like the MP was tacked on by Nihilistic. It just felt very generic to me and could be the same issue with COD.

Patch is now live for Madden on Vita if anyone didn't see it in the other thread.

That's sort of my point though... using the touchscreen/dpad to replace those functions work fine. Is it as fluid as the console experience? Of course not, but it's a hell of a lot better than any other current handheld FPS options. I don't see Modern Combat on iPhone/iPad getting blasted for it's touchscreen only control setup, and Resistance's controls were INFINITELY better than what that series offers. Yet these apps get a pass, and the Vita games don't, despite being able to mirror their controls MUCH closer to what we get on a console.

I had almost zero trouble with Resistance's controls, only thing that I found wonky was running, once I played it for a short while the controls weren't a concern.

It makes me wonder how many of those complaining actually played the game longer than a minute, if at all.

Are you talking about people like me? I'm not really "complaining," but I just wish there was a workaround that didn't, say, throw reviewers off-guard that would, in turn, throw customers off-guard.

I'm getting COD for Vita and for Vita only. I'm frankly more turned off by the 30 FPS than any of the control issues (unless they took out the Legacy control scheme, in which case that would be my biggest turn-off).

Nah, not referring to you, but reviewers/media who give said touchscreen games 9/10, but a game like Resistance a completely unwarranted 5/10 despite it providing a much better experience.

I get the 30fps thing though as that's part of what defines CoD on consoles.

I'm sorry guys, resistance was horrible. Bad AI, plain environments, lack of interesting combat scenarios, just a bad game. CoD is going to suck. I think I'm going to sell my Vita after AssCreed and Persona 4

Touchscreen games are rated relative to other $0.99-$7.99 touchscreen games though, Vita is judged as a portable console and criticism is much harsher as a result.

I'm in whole different boat than the general lot. I like being able to earn my ps trophies on the go. That's it for me.

Of course I love the games I have so far and look forward to what the future holds.

Also, the psp didn't get much 3rd party support either and I still played the heck out of it on vacations.

This bad boy seems 1,000 times better to me, considering I have Netflix on it along with a nice host of other features my trusty psp didn't have.

And for once in a long time I'm still playing my Yankees MLB the show season this late in the year.

On both systems I might add...
