Re: Gaming headsets
I can see that. I guess the point I should have made on top of what I posted is it is difficult to obtain the convenience of a wireless configuration and good quality sound. Either quality or convenience is typically sacrificed at the convenience of the other. However, if sound quality is your primary goal and you are willing to sacrifice wireless capability then the way to go would be what I posted above.Gig 'em, Aggies!Comment

Astro and TB make excellent sounding (not reference) headphones that offer wireless tech and that is why they can charge 300
Most people do not want to start buying pieces from diff places to get a better sounding headphone to work. The prefer one purchase and no wires. Is 300 a lot? heck yea but we cant do nothing about it because we require wirelessComment

Re: Gaming headsets
Yea sound quality is best in reference headphones but gaming is about being easily accessible. Most console gamers rock from big tv and living rooms for most part. PC gamers rock on desktops which is easier to plug wires.

Perhaps, the title of this thread could be changed to "WIRELESS GAMING HEADSETS" and that would fit the narrative of many posting in this thread and would essentially eliminate me from posting about wired setups..

Re: Gaming headsets
I see the "reason" console gamers want wireless. For me, I can't game on a couch type setup. I want multi-monitors (multitask while gaming, discord, music, twitter, etc), gaming chair support, fast response monitor, and GREAT SOUND.
So being that I don't "NEED" wireless, I surely wasn't going with Astro's or the equivalent headset. I was going to use a quality pair of cans and that came down to an array of options which will all stomp the "gaming headsets" in terms of quality.
First up, OPEN BACK......you need an open back if you want to get a true spacial awareness with your sound stage. Closed back cans just can't create the airiness needed to accurately depict where individual sounds are coming from. Listening to a live concert with a excellent pair of open back cans, you can hear exactly how far to the left or right the bassist is, or just how deep to the rear the drummer is, or in gaming terms where exactly those foot steps are coming from. Not just left or right channel but distance, height, pin point direction.
Next would be the drivers themselves. Most decent cans (except maybe Sennheiser rocks some low ohm drivers which are good quality) will feature high impedance cans which require more power to push BUT you will get higher quality sound because of this. This is where you get the inclusion of DACs/AMPs, but that extends past this discussion.
You have several headphones far under the Astro $300 price point which will offer far better sound.
Sennheisser 598's is a great starter pair. Open back, low ohm of 50ohm so they will work with everything no amp needed, plus lean towards rich mids. At an affordable $150 price point.
Beyerdynamic DT990 is your mid level everyday pair. Open back, very comfortable, higher 250 ohm so you will require a dac/amp, they lean towards the highs/treble, excellent positional sound. Price point of $200.
I went with AKG's 612 pros. Similar to the Beyerdynamic in a lot of regards, #1 for me was comfort after coming from Sennheisser which can be a bit "clampy". Open back, 120 ohm so amp was required, reference can so the sound stage is more neutral across the board, great positional audio with slight nod on the highs, all at a great price of $150.
So while I see the argument that console gamers make. I play console games just the same but my entire setup will out do a Astro A50 all day and I paid less.
Mic - Blue Yeti (Insane mic quality)
AKG K612 Pro (Absolutely gorgeous headphone)

Re: Gaming headsets
Need some help.
I'm looking for a cheap headset that is comfortable and has a detachable mic. I'm looking to spend less than $70 and get decent sound quality and mic capability to chat with my buddy. I have a PS4. Can anyone give me any suggestions? There are so many, and I'm completely new to gaming headsets and don't know what brands are trustworthy or not. Thanks for the help!Comment
