I just want to get one now to play...and I'm not a big handheld guy. Problem is, the wife and I each have a DS Lite that just sits around. She doesn't play her's at all now that she has an iPod touch. Not too keen on paying $250 for it, though.
If you trade in one of those DS lites to Gamestop you can get $50 off the 3DS purchase if that helps all.

Can't believe this will be bought for kids when Nintrndo has openly said it's bad for a child's eyes.

Before anyone feels like quoting the 7 year old age mark, that still won't stop people from buying it. Insane. All it takes is a few rehashes of long time child friendly franchises and boom - out comes the credit card.

I'm very curious of the sales numbers for this thing. I'm sure it sold but the bigger question is did it sell "well?"

According to Nintendo, it sold more then their other handhelds did for the 1st day.

The 3D console will set you back $250, though two separate teardowns reported this week that the 3DS costs about $100 to produce.
        It really does print money.

Gamestop will give you $50 a piece for those right now.

hmm.....tempting. I would lose Guitar Hero and Puzzle Fighter, though, due to the GBA slot loss. Puzzle Fighter hurts the worst.

Definitely something to think about. How long is GameStop offering that?

I'm not really sure... Originally I think it was only supposed to be up until launch, but it seems they've extended it indefinitely for the time being.

                  Re: Nintendo 3DS

Played around with one at Best Buy the other day...cool tech, but the 3D was more like a "seeing-eye 3D" (for those of you that remember that wacky craze of computer-generated "3D" posters...) than, say, "Avatar" in IMAX. What struck me was how small the screen is - I mean, I know it's a portable, but the console itself is not that small, and the main screen is just about the same as an iPhone.

I just don't get how these things sell so well - I mean, other than kids, who actually carries a game system around with them when they go out? And if you're just using it at home, then why not just use your wii, Xbox, PS3, whatever? Must be a generational thing that I just don't get...

I mean, other than kids, who actually carries a game system around with them when they go out?

Women do, thats who. They stick it in their purse. I can't go to an Applebee's, Chilli's or eating place like that and NOT see at least 3 women in there playing the DSI. Same thing when going to the break room at the office, women be in there playing it.

Really???!!! Wow, I am floored by your observations, and I guess I stand corrected. I have literally never seen a woman in a public place like a restaurant or wherever noshing over a DSi. I definitely have never seen one at my place of work whippin' out the portable. Maybe I'm just not that keen to notice, though....maybe I have seen it and I assumed it was a cell phone or something.

Anyway, the point of my comment was not to belittle or condescend anyone, I am just legitimately amazed by the sales numbers for these handhelds since I really don't notice that many people (or any people, for that matter) carrying these around other than kids. Heck, even when I was a kid and the original Gameboy came out (yeah...I'm kinda old), I still remember thinking "when would I ever use that?" other than maybe family vacations once a year. It's just not something I think of as something people carry around, and I feel like I would have noticed since the sales numbers are in iPhone territory, and you see those literally everywhere you go (i.e. the sales numbers are consistent with your daily heuristic experiences).

Games on your phone, on the other hand, I can totally understand, since that's literally on your person at all times, and pretty much everyone has a celly over the age of 15 or whatever...

I have seen the 3ds in every major store around my area in Tampa. I could have sworn the DSI sold out. I wonder if Nintendo is stretching those sales estimates.

I would say that people are a little burnt out with higher priced tech in this economy, but there is that Ipad2 phenomenom.

Don't get me wrong, I love my apple products, but the 3DS would be sold put everywhere too if they had only sent about 10-20 units to every store at launch, and then none since, lol.

It's kind of funny... when Nintendo DIDN'T have enough units with the Wii, people were upset, now that they planned ahead a little better with the 3DS, people say it's not selling.

Sometimes I think shortages have been a great strategy for Nintendo. People talked about shortages and lineups for Wiis for quite awhile. Then when people hear about them on the news they think they must be awesome and they have to run out and get them creating a false frenzy. I may be crazy but I've thought that Nintendo liked that a little bit in the past to create more buzz and demand for their products.

Well for one I travel a good bit and having one on the plane, terminal or hotel room etc.. is nice.
Also there are some games that are just on the handhelds etc...

So it's not a generational thing (I'm 44 BTW) but a nice addition to have depending on the individuals needs and likes.

Nope, not a generational thing it seems...as it turns out, I was just flat-out wrong. I guess I just don't have my eyes open as it seems tons of people own these things - I mean, they sold 150 million of the DS's (3x the number of iPhones sold, and it seems like every other person owns one), so obviously you aren't alone. As it turns out, I'm the one that's on the outside of this apparently massive gaming trend. I should try to pay attention now that I know so many people own these things.
