Better to sell fossils or to give them to the museum?

I give them all to the museum, because I think the exhibit things are neat. All the extras I either keep to give away or sell.

Every first for me (fossil, fish, bug, etc.) goes to the museum. After that sold.

The museum won't accept it once it's identified.

Requirement: Purchase from the museum's second floor extension after donating at least 15 fossils.

Silver Axe
Effect: More durable than a regular axe, and always creates a rare stump pattern.
Requirement: Purchase from the island shop for 8 medals. (Can be replaced)

Silver Net
Effect: Has a wider capture range than a regular net.
Requirement: Purchase from the museum's second floor extension after donating at least 30 bugs.

Silver Fishing Rod
Effect: Fish are more likely to bite and will bite down longer than with a regular rod.
Requirement: Purchase from the museum's second floor extension after donating at least 30 fish.

Silver Watering Can
Effect: Has a wider watering range than a regular Watering Can.
Requirement: Talk to Lazy the sloth after purchasing at least 50 flower seeds from the gardening shop.

Silver Slingshot
Effect: Fires 2 shots at once.
Requirement: Shoot down the present with 2 silver balloons attached to it.


GOLDEN TOOLS

Golden Shovel
Effect: Can be used to grow a money tree, and makes fertilizer more effective.
Requirement: Talk to Lazy the sloth after purchasing at least 50 fertilizers from the gardening shop.

Golden Axe -
Effect: Never breaks, cuts down trees faster, and sometimes creates a rare stump pattern.
Requirement: Talk to Lazy the sloth after purchasing at least 50 tree saplings from the gardening shop.

Golden Net
Effect: Has a much wider capture range than a regular net.
Requirement: Talk to the bug catching tournament host after catching every bug in the game.

Golden Fishing Rod -
Effect: Fish are much more likely to bite and will bite down much longer than with a regular rod.
Requirement: Talk to the fishing tournament host after catching every fish in the game.

Golden Watering Can -
Effect: Has a much wider watering range than a regular watering can
Requirement: Talk to Shizu after maintaining 15 days of perfect environmental conditions.

Golden Slingshot -
Effect: Fires 3 shots at once.
Requirement: Shoot down the present with 3 gold balloons attached to it.

Been playing this quite a bit. How do you get to the island? Do you need four people in your town before you can take a boat there?

Negative. Later on in the game (I don't know exactly how many days) the old mayor shows up and says he now lives on the island and will have the boat take you there. Haven't been there yet.

After you've acquired enough points to REALLY start being mayor, the old mayor will send you an invite to the island.

I have the Net, the Shovel and the Fishing Pole.

I think I need the Watering Can and the Axe. Any other major tools I am missing/don't know about?

I forget when/how we get slingshot. Watering Can I got by completing all of Isabella's stuff at Town Hall (giving her a seashell and doing all the stuff she'd tell me about). Axe I'm hoping is in the store ASAP.

I got to 22,000 bells after the down payment of my home. I am hoping the fishing rod will be in the store today so I can get cracking on fishing. I know from past experience that will really help the bell count...

There is. I got a blue cabinet in my house that has more storage than I need at the moment.

I was able to talk to Isabella at the town hall to do her quests and got her to sell me a rod. Otherwise yesterday I wouldn't have been able to use one. She told me to try fishing. Then when I came back later saying I didn't have a rod she sold me one.

I wish I knew that. I had started doing stuff for her like getting her a shell etc. If I had known there was a fishing rod somewhere down the line I would have plugged through it. Oh well, I imagine there will be a rod waiting for me when the store gets restocked today.

Good question, I wouldn't be opposed. I am trying to remember if a 3ds game has ever had its own thread.
