Buttons feel the same. You will get used to them, as they are not loose and unresponsive. I don't notice any difference in them than I do my PS4 controller.
I agree that the X and S are really great updates to the original. But I don't think the Elite buttons are any different, either. So I would not buy an Elite thinking that they are going to feel stiffer.
I got my PS4 back yesterday after my daughter had it at college. I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone prefers that controller. Even ignoring the battery wasting touchpad and colored light, I hate that I cannot reliable hit the options button without hitting the touchpad. It's recessed and concave, which is just asinine. So every time I want too pause, or look at my lineup, it's a pain in the butt.
I do think Sony finally got the size and button placement to a point that feels better, even if they don't offset the stick. That part of the controller doesn't bother me at all, where earlier versions really did.
The main think I hated about the PS4 controller before she took it away was the unreliable battery. It was dead all the freaking time. As a long time Xbox user, I'm not used to having to think about the battery.
