Well here is a semi counter argument for the S...
We had two original Xbox One, then got two S's to replace those, then two X's to replace those. As it stands, I currently have 5 of those 6 connected.
-The X's are in the two main gaming rooms, family room with a C8 tv, and in the living room/office with a 4k hdr monitor and C7 tv (connected to both through an HDMI matrix.)
-One of the S's is in the basement also on an OLED, the B7. So on a fairly same quality of tv as the two X's. I have time and time again thought about getting another X for down there, but the more I use it, the more I convince myself the S works just fine.
The games are upscaled to 4k internally. While the textures arent as good, they still look fine enough. It also uses HDR for games that support it which is a bigger jump in quality than the resolution to me. The performance - I dont know if I have really played enough on it to notice the difference between on there and the X. I do notice lower textures/graphics, but haven't on performance. Streaming is netflix is 4k and HDR, Hulu live tv works the same.
Add to that he said he is still using a 1080p tv. While the X and Pro downsampling will make it look better and perform better in the games that are set to do so - he didnt notice a difference with the Pro, so likely wouldnt with the X either.
I'd say if you don't have a 4k tv and didnt notice a huge difference with the Pro on it, going with the S would be just fine if you wanted to get back into Xbox. Then you'd save 240 or so that you could put towards the next consoles which are supposedly only 2-3 years away.
