If by "always on" it means the system is always active, as in the power is on, then that changes everything. If my internet is down and I can still play, then everything is fine. But the Starcraft Diablo type thing for an entire console is blah.

- Mandatory installs is not a bad thing as long as we don't have to have the disc in to play the games. I hate changing disc in and out of my Xbox, plus load times and game performance should be better.
- My only question is watermark games, will they prevent us from playing used games. Thats the biggie that remains to be seen.Comment

Ghetto, I like the bullet points. There are minor points I disagree with, but here's my major one.
Kinect. I know everyone feels different about them which is completely cool with me. By making it a requirement though I know of multiple sales they will lose. Kinect is just a gimmick which I haven't seen anything positive come from. Now its required to be on and has to be to play games? Smh.
If MS goes through on some of these rumors I hippie their console flops harder than the Dreamcast. That will give console devs the time to take a good long, hard look at what's truly important in a console - less gimmicks, reliable hardware and quality games with good new IPs.badComment

Re: Xbox 720
Second to achievements, I think Kinect will go down as the 2nd biggest lasting innovation this console gen. I get that it's not for everyone, but it's incredibly popular and single handedly gave the 360 a second wind this generation. There's a reason why Sony has included a carbon copy of it with the PS4.
I can't tell you the last time we used it to play a game, but it is the primary reason why we use the 360 over PS3 for media center functions. When your child is asleep laying on your chest and the controller is out of reach a simple 'Xbox, Next Episode' is priceless. Even outside of that very specific example the convenience cannot be conveyed without experiencing it IMO.
I'm looking forward to where they take the product next and see if any of the derogatory assumptions change.Comment

I don't mean to be insulting to anyone, but some of you need to look beyond yourselves and what you prefer and consider that Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and any other company in the business of making consoles and videogames is going to tap into every single possible means of profit. They are for-profit companies.
Dismissing Kinect, calling it a gimmick etc., just doesn't speak to what it is and will become. It's not going to replace the controller. That's silly. But it gives many users enjoyment. My four sons love Just Dance, Kinect Sports and several other Kinect related games. They aren't some odd, select few. Many people enjoy it and use it.
As far as "always on" goes...so what? We walk around all day with our smart phones always on, looking for the one phone with the best battery life....to stay on. And this idea that going all digital can't work should be sold to Steam. Tell them digital only doesn't work. I don't know if some are being stubborn or have valid concerns, but going digital is happening. Gamestop knows it and has already taken measures to prepare for it. But it is inevitable.
The 360 already has a low power mode and it works great. If you want to download something, simply start the download and turn your box off. It goes into power save mode and continues the download until finished and then turns off. There's a reason they did that this gen...they are going to introduce it fully the next. It's just a healthy practice that Microsoft has incorporated for Xbox and it has done great for them.Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.Comment

My issue comes when you tell me that I have to have one to play games, and have to have it running constantly if I want to play. That right there would lose at least 10 sales that I personally know of (and I don't have many friends.)
As for digital - I love digital distribution. Steam is fantastic, and it saves me from going out and dealing with stupid people at malls and such. They target a completely different group though. Anyone that has Steam and a gaming PC will have broadband. Not so with consoles. The US doesn't have the infrastructure yet to support a console with completely digital distribution, and if they were to go that route it would hurt them. It's completely valid, but at this point in time to do so on a console wouldn't be smart.
I'm fine with all the add-ons and gimmicks they come out with (I mean, even Nintendo had the Duck Hunt gun and Track&Field mats), but they need to make those optional, in my personal opinion.
Playstation has had the PSEye since 07, and the Sixaxis since 06... but again, those are optional (like the Kinect is currently.) Selling things as a package is cool - so even if all Xbox-of-the-future consoles were to sell bundled with a Kinect I would still buy it... but only if the Kinect wasn't a requirement.
Oh well, at least we have choicesbadComment

Guess you didn't notice that every PS4 appears to be coming with their version of kinect that might be required for every game because its tied to their controller?
In the end the difference between the rumors and the things you find acceptable above is just context.

Re: Xbox 720
Yes, that's a motion sensor. It's not a stand-in webcam/all-in-one type thing like the PSEye and Kinect. Even if the camera that launches with the PS4 comes bundled, it's not required to play.
Making motion sensing necessary is one thing for games (which some won't even utilize), telling me that I have to have an accessory web-cam on to even play a game if I'm not going to use it is ridiculous to me. The focus for consoles is moving further and further away from the games to being a media center computer for your living room.
I'm cool with that move, as long as there are still options for those people that just truly want to sit down and play some old-fashioned video games and don't need their console to be a multi-tasking internet machine. Again, I'm not saying it will fail just airing my opinions on the direction of the 720 that disappoint me. To each their own, as always - and I understand that the XBox has a huge fanbase in North America.Last edited by ubernoob; 03-22-2013, 04:37 PM.badComment

Re: Xbox 720
I'm sorry but I HATE this always on idea. I don't want my system on 365 days, 24 hours a day. That is drawing power even if only a small amount. It is extra stress on the console to stay on literally always.
I want my system to turn off when I want it off and on when I want to use it PERIOD.
I'm leaning heavier and heavier to the PS4 and I said I was only going 720. Yet some of the things coming out of the MS camp is stupid in my opinion. Hell I might not get either at this rate.Comment

Re: Xbox 720
I'm not crazy about no used games. That would be the one thing (right now) that I don't want to go without. The "always on" thing doesn't bother me because there are devices that can be always on and use very little power. My router, modem etc. It just doesn't bother me to where I feel like I can't enjoy the system because of it.
I just don't see the point of forcing it to be on. Why can't I turn it off and on when I wish?Comment

True, yet I don't feel confident with a console being on 24/7 lasting as long as one that is only on when I am using it. What about the people who don't game every day. Say you only play a game on the weekend, that means your console is on 6 days to 1 day playing. Your xbox is on doing nothing just racking up hours and hours of "use" even though you are not using it. Instead of that same person turning on the console when he wants to use it so the "used" time would be MUCH lower.
