Re: Xbox One
Yeah but I don't have to depend on the Xbox store being up to reinstall a game if I have the disc. If I was 100 percent digital and needed to reinstall a game and live was down that would be pretty annoying.Comment

Understandable, but I would wager the odds of that happening is incredibly close to nilComment

Re: Xbox One
Hey guys I'm currently going through an advanced exchange nightmare. Just wanted to give a heads up to those of you who may be interested in this service. Be very careful they charged my card 425.00 even though I followed their return policy to the T. Evidently someone at the warehouse misplaced my already scanned in unit and it eventually led to my card being charged. Its been a nightmare, after this gets fixed I'll respond to how well they did or didn't take care of me. Just a heads up. Not saying that your return would end this way but it could.Comment

Re: Xbox One
I agree the change to at minimum a mostly digital will happen but not for a long time. That's all. It sure as hell ain't going to happen as soon as some of you guys seem to think.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Xbox One
We'll see how ****ty digital is then for people like me when it happens. I'm already jaded with the bull**** we have to put up with as "gamers." At the very least I can play my SNES/PSX games with zero issues. If they were digital? Sorry buddy, you're ****ed. Hope you enjoyed your license while it lasted. As it is now, all you are doing is renting a game for $60 for an unspecified time with digital.
Broken game launches fully accepted, incomplete games being launched, patch after patch after patch, etc.
If there's one thing the industry has taken steps backwards in it's DLC (well, it's like 3 steps forward, 5 steps back in that regard), the constant need for patching and in general the bloat of games and studios that hinder creativity.
Digital video games are still super young. We'll have to see how these growing pains go before saying either way that it will or won't happen.Last edited by ubernoob; 12-04-2014, 09:44 AM.badComment

Re: Xbox One
Well stated ubernoob, this is what I was saying, the general public, and even a portion of gamers, really want that disc in hand for reasons you cite above.
Lest anyone misunderstand me, I do think digital will grow and as I said earlier, I personally like it and use it, but the reports of the impending death of physical media for consoles won't happen for decades, if ever.
Also, as someone pointed out, we still have cds and dvds for sale in stores for crying out loud..even music isn't 100% digital and how long have mp3s been around... By most people's reasoning here we should be all digital in music as there is little, to no reason, to actually go purchase a cd at a store anymore....Last edited by ODogg; 12-04-2014, 01:56 PM.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Edit - same with PC games. They used to be stocked with many game disks at Best Buy, now i don't even know if they have them at all, if so it can't be more than a handful.Comment

Re: Xbox One
And wanting to play old games, after the service isn't supported?

However as far as the patching...there is some saying like the more moving parts the more that can go wrong? I think something along the lines of a Murphy's Law. Games today are (random guessing based on my development background and dabbling in 2d sprite games and 3d games) hundreds of thousands of times more complex. I don't think it is that it "is the way" these days, I think it is because it is actually incredibly complex and incredibly hard to get it right. Considering how much more time and effort it takes to make these games vs console games pre-patch (xbox, ps2, and prior) and how the cost of games hasn't gone up much at all...it would be hard to justify adding an extra year or two or whatever to get things "right" when you can release a product and get some sales, patch in the things that need tuning (or in the occurence dont work at all) and go from there.
Perfect example is nhl 15. It was missing features. They got as much done as they could and released a game that at the very least played without being "broken". They will patch the issues and some added features. People want to blame the developers for being incompetent or lazy or just wanting to make a buck. The fact is they release a playable game, and added what they could in the given amount of time. And since the games are much more complex now, it takes more time to do it.Comment

Re: Xbox One
I was under the impression that that is what others implied by all digital, not literally 100%. Similar to music and getting very close to that with movies...that physical media would still be available, but those who purchase them would be few and far between with very little selection in store. Best Buy used to have many rows of cd's, now they dont even fill a single aisle on a single side. The space taken for movies is slowly shrinking as well.
Edit - same with PC games. They used to be stocked with many game disks at Best Buy, now i don't even know if they have them at all, if so it can't be more than a handful.
With both music and movies, the physical formats have changed over the years, but we really haven't seen anything dramatically different for many years. Sure there are still CDs and DVDs/Blu-Rays and both widely accepted, but both industries have embraced digital media and the move towards it will only get stronger. What physical media can you put or get 4K content on physical media? It's only available for download or on a digital device. Some new cars do not come standard with a means of playing a CD anymore.
Way back in the day, I remember Software Etc and Babbages having entire stores of strictly computer games and software. Where are they now...you have Steam for that. Remember Blockbuster...you have Netflix (digital streaming) now. How about Tower Records...iTunes takes care of that now. Eventually the same could happen with GameStop, unless they change/morph into something else that embraces the digital side.
The move to digital distribution is inevitable and to say the gaming giants aren't embracing it is laughable. For example...with Microsoft and the first Xbox, they introduced Xbox Live (the means of distribution). When the 360 launched, we were introduced to the XBL Arcade/Marketplace. On the 360, we even started to see full retail games being available for purchase, but these were almost never available at the release date (sometimes days or weeks after). Now with the One, we have pre-buying and downloads for full retail games and games are now available to download/buy on release date. What can we expect with the next generation of consoles? What hardware/technological limitations will they have to overcome to keep on making games on physical media, if it will even be possible?XBL & PSN: zasbury25Comment

Re: Xbox One
My point is until the console makers encourage very strongly the belief in digital we will not see it mainstream. Until we see the ability to trade in digital, gift digital, resell digital, buy digital at much cheaper price or other benefits, combined with hardware manufacturers shipping consoles from day one with massive hard drives, then digital will remain a rather small percentage of overall users.
Right now consumers just see a lot of disadvantages and very few reasons to switch..Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Xbox One
You know one way I was thinking they could encourage folks to go digital is instead of lowering the price make it sorta like EA Access where if you buy the game digital you get the full game on the Friday before launch. But unlike EA Access no stupid 6 hour limit. That'd convert a LOT of physical media buyers IMO.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20
