About a year and a half ago with a thing called the Kinect.

If you mean stuff like the Sega CD, 32X, N64 Expansion Pack... Well... That track record speaks for itself.

        Re: Xbox One

The only point of data I can think of for a successful hardware add-on is the PlayStation Multi-Tap, and even then I don't really know how successful that was. Maybe PSX / PS2 memory cards are also "successful add-ons", but that was before game consoles came with on-board data storage.

EDIT: I wasn't an N64 owner so I don't know how well it sold, but certainly the Rumble Pak add-on for controllers has at least influenced the evolution of game consoles. Does that count?

I think if XBOX is going to sell a modular video game console, they are going to have to change the culture around video game consoles as a whole. They tried that once already in 2013, that didn't go so well. Not that they can't do better this time - half the problem MSFT had when they introduced the XBOX One was that their messaging for what it was exactly was awful - but they've got an uphill battle certainly.

I don't think I could consider the memory cards as hardware add ons. I think they fell into the "necessary peripheral" category due to the prohibitive cost of memory at the time and the switching to CD format.

Now if we were talking ps2 hard drive... Don't know how that sold, by I'd have to guess not that well in America. Probably better in Japan because of FFXI.

I don't see how this is even close to the same thing. I guess using this logic you can say the elite controller is the same thing. Which seems to be doing fine.

I can only think of a handful of games that even leveraged the PS2 hard drive - FF XI, SOCOM: US Navy Seals (and its sequel, SOCOM 2; this is what I got it for), and ESPN NFL 2K5. Given that, I have to imagine it did pretty poorly over here.

No. There aren't games that require the Elite Controller. That's a peripheral. The Kinect is a hardware add-on.

I get that. You are comparing the Kinect to a hardware upgrade though. Which it most certainly is not. It's no different than a racing wheel or controller to me. I realize some games require it but it's not something designed to increase the performance of the console.

                    Re: Xbox One

Last gen, the Kinect was the most successful accessory ever, 8m units the first 60 days, 20-something million sold by 2013 I think.

And this has the potential for more practical use by more of the install base.

Uphill battle, but all about how it's presented, pricing and capabilities.

Ship it for $100-$150 w/ a AAA game and some indies to show it off and many will be there day one to pick it up.

We already have graphic options in The Division, wouldn't be surprised to see more of that with some things only able to be turned on if the expansion is present (if they don't turn on automatically).

If few titles are 'exclusive' but many support it, could be something really nice, and then they can iterate on the concept from there.

In the end, I don't really care. It's an interesting idea that I'll care more about if/when anything ever comes of it - which is far from a certainty. Until then the internet is gonna internet, while I'll enjoy some cross-buy titles as they work on their single ecosystem bit.

I was talking about sega CD, 32x etc... It's not a good idea and the Kinect is different but look at the direction of the Xbox when it was announced and their direction now.

I'm not ready to write off a company like microsofts hardware innovations in 2016 based off a decision sega made in 1992.

Especially if you've read about how Sega actually was during that time period, with fighting/clashing US vs. Japan.

Microsoft is also a bigger company trying to push their Windows market as well, so I think they'd do things a bit differently.

Not saying it'd work, but I would agree that consoles are changing.

I love Kinect too but his point was very valid. Add-ons fragment the market and create issues for developers in regards to how they develop their games.

The original reason consoles came around was to unify a platform and to prohibit cost for gaming.

Things are changing and this could actually make console gaming cheaper. Why would I buy another console when I could just upgrade my current one for less cost? I'm not ready to say this is a bad thing. Need more details though obviously.
