I never said it was a complete waste.

The general public disagrees though. The Kinect 1 sold a lot (like the Wii also did) until people realized it was a gimmick. Was there ever a Kinect game worth playing? Ever?

Fragmenting your market share is one of the worst things you can do. Especially when it comes to console gaming.

Hell, people in here are already whining about "But my exclusives! Why should PC get them?!?!?!?!"

Fast forward to a time (mind you this is all hypothetical) when an "upgrade exclusive" game comes out. If ever. You can't seriously think that these same people wouldn't be like "Ohhhh I bought your system but I can't play this game? This is BS Microsoft." and throw a **** fit.

You can do this already. It's called PC gaming, and it's cheaper than console gaming. If you think the performance/price will be anything worthwhile, that's just silly.

Sold the free Xbox One console to my boss for $50.00.

He's into electronics tech stuff so I'm sure he'll have it fixed in no time, but with no cords, controller, games, etc. and it doesn't work and was free.. I'll take it.

If I had my own little shop or area to work out of I probably would keep it just to try to learn.

Incremental upgrades are convenient and cheap yes but as I said they fragment the market, making games much more difficult to develop. Lets say they come out with a way of increasing your Xbox Ones ram with a MegaRam drive or such. When developers make a game they can make it for MegaRam owners which cuts out about 85% of the market so they likely won't do that. So they could make the game for the 85% of the market that has not upgraded, but then they won't have the "best game" that they could.

So what happens? They end up making two games, one for those with the upgrade and one for those without. Which increases game time development and cost.

Or you know what more likely happens? They simply say screw it and just make the game for the PS4 which doesn't have a fragmented market because they realized the reason people went to consoles to begin with.

Yes times most certainly have changed but the reason for consoles existing and why people play them versus simply playing PC games (and why people play PC games and don't console as well) has not changed. This is just Microsofts wishful thinking IMO..

How is that different than the 360/one situation now? They need to make those same decisions.

You are acting like they plan on upgrading the console every three weeks. Which is just silly. We don't have details but I'm under the assumption instead of a "next gen" we just upgrade our ones to perform better. Just like we upgraded from 360 to one. It doesn't fragment the market anymore than it does now.

Except that's nigh impossible to do. The console generation, unlike last gen where the 360 was actually stronger, started out as a mediocre PC. There's not a way to add on to this that would replace a "next gen" console.

This isn't Xbox but I think it's applicable: I would've been FURIOUS if Pokemon Sun and Moon had been announced as New Nintendo 3DS exclusive. And I know I'm not the only one.

It seems like Microsoft thinks it is possible. We will have to wait and see.

It's different because the 360 is still the 360 and one market and the One is still the One and a different market. Any developer that wants to make a 360 game knows exactly what the specs he needs to program for.

But if you have different "models" of Xbox Ones with different memory, graphics cards, or whatever, that is not the case.

Phil Spencer thinks its possible. And honestly maybe it is. Personally don't get me wrong, I could perhaps like the idea if I heard more details.

But when I heard this my first thought was that 32x CD player for the Genesis, LOL.

And I also might add, I played PC games for nearly 20 years and actually became more of a console gamer because I got tired of wondering how games would run on my PC and thinking it was time to buy a new graphics card, etc.

Not sure I want to go back to that world.

And honestly I don't see any need for it considering how successful this most recent batch of consoles has been. I think Phil Spencer sees a lot of money to be made in incremental upgrades and that's fine but I'm not sure it would be as beneficial to us consumers as we might think.

As others here have said, just wait until the first "MegaRAM" Xbox One game comes out that is only compatible with the newest Ram upgraded Xbox One.

Let's be honest here, the general consumer is ignorant and, in most cases, just plain dumb. The first time that game hits, there will be a MAJOR backlash when 90% of the gamers who own an Xbox One cannot play it.

That's just how it is and I don't think Phil Spencer, being the genius that he is, can change that scenario...

                          Re: Xbox One

Another thing to consider too is that a lot of parents buy their kids consoles. Maybe this isn't as true as it once was since gamers are getting older (anyone know what the median Xbox One gamer age is??) but the truth is there are still a lot of children out there who game thanks to their parents buying them a machine.

Do you guys realize how many parents would HATE this idea? They want to buy a game system and they are DONE. The only money after that is the occasional game for a birthday or such. They would not want to be upgrading the video card or memory or such.

So that's a large segment of the market that would NEVER embrace this idea.

I'm sure devs will be aware of the differences between the hardware in this case too.

People get mad over this stuff all the time. There are games now that don't come out in PS3 and 360. It just looks worse in the nintendos case because they picked an awful name for what is the equivalent of their next gen hand held. They have always done that though so whatever works for them I guess.

To me for it to be successful (if it's coming anytime soon) it needs to work with everything. Very few 'exclusives', which the end result being more overhead for games to add more, since the ideal situation is the games will be designed for the Xbox ecosystem and meant to potentially run on a variety of devices as it is.

We'd get a game like Gears 4, looking fantastic as-is, but if you have the expansion you get snowstorms like The Division, support to play it at 4k resolution (or a higher framerate in general), etc. Things that are built on the same platform for PC gamers to take advantage of now available on this platform because of the optional overhead.

Can it be implemented like that? Is that remotely their plan? No idea. They've got a long way to sell people.

A trailer like this could have been for the expanded Xbox One version as well as PC.
