Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

FWIW, Here is a cheaper build that can run mostly anything you want it to.. this could be outdated build, but from what I can tell on amazon, I would give it a look.

      CPU - i5-3570K 3.4ghz - http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Core-i5-...=operasport-20 OR i5-4670K - http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i5-4670K...=operasport-20

      Graphics Card - Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 - http://www.amazon.com/PNY-GeForce-Di...=operasport-20

      Motherboard - http://www.amazon.com/LGA1155-CrossF...=operasport-20

      Ram - http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengea...=operasport-20

CPU Cooler (Always get one) - http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-...=operasport-20

      Power supply - http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Builde...=operasport-20

The CPU is a great price and amazing bang for the buck. I have it myself and OC'd it and it is awesome, pure awesome. Really recommend it on a budget PC (If you wanna call it that)

Do not bother with an i7 unless you plan to do video editing and such as you will not benefit from the hyper threading to justify the price difference for performance.

The motherboard can be substituted for any that fits LGA 1155 (Intel socket) and fits your needs, how much ram it holds, SLI or Crossfire, etc.

Video card is also something you need to choose as within your budget (assuming you have a mouse, keyboard and screen) you can go big with this and you need to. I would spend anywhere from $200 (if you need monitor, etc..) to $400. This really needs to be a big focus, the 3570K will blend well with any of these. I would not buy the OC'd edition unless it is same price or within $10, as you can OC it to that yourself.

Ram - 8 GB is plenty for now, but if you can, go for 16GB as it does come in handy if you do multiple demanding programs, great for photoshop too! Ram is dirt cheap compared to what it used to be.

Cooler - #1 must have IMO. Its cheap and REALLY helps stay cool.

A case can run anywhere from $50-250. The better the case, the better the cooling, You will need AT LEAST a mid tower. Make sure to not go smaller otherwise you will not fit also make sure the case you pick can fit the cooler (it sticks up!) and the video card (they are so long nowadays!)

I do not think I am missing anything but if you total that up it comes up to...

CPU - $230 (Can get the new i5-4670K for $20 cheaper but requires more power for ~7% increase, depends if on power supply your getting, etc.)
      GFX Card - $310
      Ram - $88
      Motherboard - $150
      Cooler - $30-35
      Power Supply - $85
Case - $50-250 (Ex. We will say you get a $80 one)

Total = ~$980 (give or take) before tax. If you live near a micro center, could go cheaper than that!

Of course this is just an example, but you can get a cheaper motherboard around $80-90 (mine was $97 and works flawless), but the extreme4 is nice. Read the specs, pick on your needs, the graphics card can go up or down depending on what you want. The ram you can get cheaper as well for 8GB (crucial, etc) but I really like consriar or gskill (what i have)

The way things come out so quick on PC, you can get some GREAT stuff for cheap, hope this helps! Go buy and Welcome to PC gaming!

Whole lot of thanks for the help here. I'll end up getting another copy of Windows, likely. I wouldn't be able to find the disc mine came on if my life depended on it.

Really didn't expect the help like this. OS is truly awesome. I'm likely going to start getting parts together soon. I'll post my final build once it's done.

Honestly you can spend just $200 on a video card. $100 on motherboard and save around $150 so plenty of room for windows.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

I know I've stated this before but my current build is 7 years old. I'm looking to upgrade but don't want to spend for a entire new rig, so this is what I'm thinking.

              Current Build

              Q6600 2.4 quad core
              ASRock Mobo
              4 gig OCZ ram
EVGA GTX 560TI (This card was added 2 years ago)
              700w Powersupply
              Coolmaster case
              500 gig internal seagate barracuda
1 TB external (all steam games on this)

              New Parts

FX-6300 proc - $120 (I was going to get the FX-8350 8 core but after reading about it the extra cores will not help for gaming for additional 80 bucks.
              8 gig HyperX Blu Ram - $65
              ASUS M5A97 R2.0 - $75

              Total - $260

I'll keep my coolmaster case, 700w power supply, hard drives, and the 560 TI. In a year from now I'll grab a GTX 770 or GTX 780, to off set the cost of a complete new build.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

Despite having a large Steam backlog I decided to dig into a game I had in my "Never going to play" category on steam. The game is STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, I bought all the games in the franchise on sale a year or two again played it once got angry at how the enemies were bullet sponges and never played again.

I saw Gopher doing a LP of it, watched it for a little while and I was like I want to play this, so I got the Complete 2009 mod with the realistic weapons add on and have been playing on Master difficulty and I got to say this game is awesome! Its tough but fair, enemies die quickly but so do you. I'm having so much fun with this its that its been taking away from my MLB the show time .

Thinking of grabbing Insurgency but fear the player base is too small. Is this a wrong assumption? Love to get it but not if there's not enough players.

After 5pm the player base jumps to around 700 normally, then on weekends its normally around 1000. I'll say it like this, I have never had a hard time finding a game at any time of the day ever.
