Tried that too cod. Still crashes back to desktop with same message.EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure. -
Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Anyone ever purchase anything from Dream Electronic? They have some pretty nice deals on peripherals, but I'm a little wary since I cannot find any information about the company.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Ok, I'll start by acknowledging that this is probably a dumb question. Anyway, I've been out of PC gaming for probably 10-15 years because I used my Xbox/PS3/ps4 for all that. I LOVE the Civilization series and just (like 10 min ago) ordered a new laptop and am excited to finally play Civ V. Lucky me, I noticed that Steam has the complete edition for like $12 or something insanely low like that. So my questions:
- what is Steam? Is it just a "Game Center" of sorts for the PC world?
- I seem to remember some people being adamantly against Steam a while back. What are the big cons of it?
- if I dl a game on Steam, do I have access to play it without an Internet connection?
Sorry...I'm sure that some of these answers are in the hundreds of pages to this thread but was hoping someone can be kind enough to answer for me. Just don't want to go the Steam route and then find out that I was an idiot for doing so...
Edit: FWIW, I don't plan to do a lot of heavy gaming (Civ, MAYBE The Sims, and probably some type of tycoon game. Oh, and likely OOTP) on the new laptop. I've got Skyrim and Dragon Age for consoles already and those are plenty for me in that respect. For now, at least...Last edited by woodjer; 08-13-2015, 02:00 PM.PSN: JWGoNDComment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
STEAM does a lot of different things these days. Even if you don't buy any games in the store, your STEAM account still lets you:- what is Steam? Is it just a "Game Center" of sorts for the PC world?
-- Instant message with friends
-- Find new friends by joining groups or posting on game-specific forums
-- Send or receive coupons or free games
-- Trade/buy/sell virtual cards that you earn for playing games
-- Unlock achievements for most games a la Xbox Live
-- Create your own mods for certain games, which you can sell for real money
-- Read or write game reviews & strategy guides
-- Broadcast your live gameplay for people to watch
-- Vote for Indie games you'd like to see greenlit by Valve
-- Set up a wish list so that you're emailed every time a game you want goes on sale
STEAM's account security isn't very good. I've never been hacked before, but many people have. Don't save any payment information with them, and make sure that your password is strong and is changed often.- I seem to remember some people being adamantly against Steam a while back. What are the big cons of it?
Yes. STEAM has an offline mode that allows you to play any game in your library whenever your Internet is out.if I dl a game on Steam, do I have access to play it without an Internet connection?
So in conclusion:
STEAM is natural.
STEAM is good.
Not everybody has it,
but everybody should.
For your first STEAM games, I recommend downloading some free stuff:
Super Crate Box
Defense of the Ancients 2
Dirty Bomb
Team Fortress 2
Quake Live
Happy Wars
Those are some of the best free games on STEAM right now.
We also have an Operation Sports group on STEAM that everyone should join:
You can probably find a few friends from that list to play with.Last edited by jyoung; 08-14-2015, 01:00 PM.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Just letting you know this is how it starts. Then you see a game that you remember from PS3 even PS2 games and go, wow only $2.99. So you buy it and download it. Next thing you know you have a game library pushing 50 games and you only finished 10.Edit: FWIW, I don't plan to do a lot of heavy gaming (Civ, MAYBE The Sims, and probably some type of tycoon game. Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
I just posted about this type of backlog in the "going digital" thread. I know how it goes!
I did get caught a little bit with the nostalgia factor already...bought the Civ III and Civ IV bundles since they were like $1 and $7 this weekend. Was all excited to revisit them after playing Beyond Earth but started up Civ III, took one look at the outdated graphics and shut it right back down. Hoping that tides me over on the nostalgia side for a while...PSN: JWGoNDComment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Never thought about this till I read your post. I just got back into PC gaming myself this past Jan. I was one in the past that had a fit when I heard about no disc support on consoles and said I would never go all digital, but I never knew about Steam and how they offer sales all the time. I now find myself with 28 games in my library and none that I paid full price for.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
I was going through my inventory this evening and realized I have three gift copies of games. So if any of y'all want one of the following, let me know:
- Dino D-Day
- ARMA: Cold War Assault
- Dead Island: Epidemic
I'm asking for nothing in return...just a simple thanks will do.Comment
