I'm pretty sure the cost of having it custom built plays into the price also. Just like anything else, labor is expensive. I'm sure minus the GPU, it would be a lot cheaper to do it myself.

But a piece of mind and warranty may be the deciding factor in going this route.... "If" I even do.

Labor isn't that expensive. I would vote for no.

Yea, they are not charging labor, they are profiting from marking the parts up slightly.

As of now @fsufan, if you built it yourself you MIGHT save a few dollars but more than likely it will be very close.

        Proc - $360ish
        mobo - $150ish
        ram - $200ish
        SSD - $200ish (M.2)
        HD - $50ish
        Power - $100ish
        Case - $100ish

So you looking at roughly $1,000 for the PC parts minus the GPU. Throw in a used card from Ebay and you could do this system for $1,500, 1,600, or so. Now if it was me, I'd buy all the parts you want then PREORDER a new Nvidia Ampere GPU when they become available and you will have your system under 2 grand.
NVIDIA is reportedly readying a brand new lineup of GeForce GTX graphics cards based on its upcoming 12nm Ampere graphics architecture for an official debut at this year's GTC in late March, a mere month away from today. Ampere has been a frequent subject of leaks and rumors in the past several months. The code name hasn't been publicly disclosed by NVIDIA in any of its previous roadmaps, however several reports have emerged alleging that Ampere will in fact power the next generation lineup of GeForce GTX graphics cards this year. In essence NVIDIA is said to be skipping a […]

At this point you could throw in a nice Corsair K95 keyboard, Mouse, and Monitor, while still fall under your original quote.

Thanks for all the advice. I almost let the fact I have the extra money to spend get the best of me. It would have been easy just to drop the money and move on and kick myself later.

Maybe I can now get that monitor also.

I need a new laptop for work and have been given $2000-2500 to spend. Gaming is obviously secondary but with that budget I should be able to squeeze in a graphics card. Any recommendations?

I'm a tad biased but only because mine is still going strong after 6 or 7 years.
I have an ASUS ROG Gaming laptop.
Of course now it can't do high end which is why I built a new PC.

It's never had a single issue and is still it tip top shape.

There may be better ones however.. I just know mine was very reliable.

The Razer Blade ones are pretty nice and my buddy swears by them and they look awesome. Also those new Asus Zephyrus laptops are sexy and the 1070 version is 2000 bucks and a 120 hz screen. Very portable but the charging brick is huge.

Speaking of gaming laptops just ordered a Acer Predator Triton 700 the one with a 1080 and a 120 hz screen. I'll be traveling a lot this year to the city and to the states and i'm always missing my rig when i travel so i thought i would pick this up when i visit Phoenix later this month.

Not much HD space, just 512 gb, so i was thinking of taking out a 500 gb ssd in my rig and get a housing for it.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

All you 144hz and/or 1440p people. Is it worth going up to that from 60hz and 1080p? Looking to potentially upgrade my GPU this year with the anticipated release of the new cards. My 970 is still a good card, but when I play games like Watch Dogs 2, The Witcher 3, and a few others I have noticed that it doesn't hold as well as it used to. It's still a pretty smooth experience when I run mostly high settings, but I have noticed a lot more dips into the sub 40's where it is noticeable. I've had the card for 2 or 3 years now, I forget. I got a my money's worth.

I've heard that going from 60hz to 144hz is incredible. Even if you aren't hitting 144hz in games, even being at 110 just feels so much better. Everything I hear about 144hz is positive. I hear good things, about 1440p, but it doesn't seem as huge of an upgrade as the 60hz to 144hz is. In fact, I've heard a number of people say that staying at 1080p is what they'd recommend and go with 1080p 144hz so you can have an easier time getting a car that runs game at high settings and frames.

I'm just a sucker for wanting to run games on High or Ultra if the game calls it that and trying to get as stable as I can around 60. That's mostly what my 970 has begun to show sings of struggling with.

1440p look way better then 1080p, you can definitely notice that. 144hz is better then 60hz too, which is something you can also notice. IMO if you going to be a PC gamer, you need a 1440p 144hz monitor to truly appreciate the power of PC gaming.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

1440p is fantastic. I have it on a 34 ultra wide at 100 hz and 27 inch with 165 hz. You will notice it BIG time coming from a 1080p 60hz monitor.

Once you go over 100hz you won't go back. That's a reason I didn't go 4k 60hz because how smooth a 100+ hz screen is. It's why its hard for me to go on to my ps4 because i notice it so much.

They are expensive monitors, so if money is tight I would stick with 1080p with a 144hz screen. I'm currently using my gaming laptop (Predator Triton 700) and it has a 120 hz 1080p screen and its great.

I'm leaning more towards 1440p and 144hz since both seem like good upgrades, especially going to 144hz, but I can't lie, some of the 1080p 144hz monitors are pretty cheap and tempting in that regard, but I think I'll end up going 1440p as well.

You may have seen me post in the monitor thread, but I ended up picking up an Asus ROG pg279q. That covers the 144hz as it is 165hz and 1440p plus I get G-Sync. I went in reverse order and got a monitor before upgrading my GPU, but I think I'll be okay. I may have to hold off on playing anymore Watch Dogs 2, at least on the new monitor, until I get a new GPU, but I know the 970 can still hold its own in the other games I play like Rocket League, CSGO, Squad, etc.

Buying the monitor activated the want to buy more for my PC and I've been looking at 1080's constantly, but I do think I'm going to try my hardest and wait out and hope they release the new GPUs later this year and I can snag one at a price similar to what the 1080s are now. If not, chances are the 1080s will drop and I can get one a couple hundred bucks cheaper than what I'd pay now. For now I think I can survive not playing Watch Dogs 2 or Ghost Recon Wildlands on the 1440p, not on the settings I am used to at 1080p anyways, for the next couple of months. I'll be itching for those new cards, though.

Rumor has it the next GPUs going to cost $100 more this generation compared to last. So that would put them around $700 for the basic ones and $800 for the ones with 2 fans.

Has anyone else signed up for the NVidia GeForce NOW Beta for cloud gaming?

I signed up for it like months ago and got a code last night. It allows you to play games you already own on your laptop through the cloud with ultra settings. Your laptop and internet need to meet certain specifications but it worked for me.

I used it last night to play Snipe Elite 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider and played at 1920 x 1080 resolution and 60 frames per second and I was very impressed. I never got close to anything like that. Only a few tiny hiccups here and there.

I don't play any computer games online so I can't comment how good it would be with an online shooter.

I'd definitely recommend signing up since the beta is free and you can't beat free.
