This is awesome as I usually keep my PS3 in my room for my games and my roommate keeps his in the living room for when we play The Show, Injustice, NHL, etc.

          ps4-analog-sticks-580-100.jpg

When we first grabbed the PS4 controller, the other alteration that grabbed our attention was the concave analog sticks. With divots in their center and raised rims around the top, the new right and left joysticks kept our thumbs in place during game demos.
This differs from the DualShock 3 controller, which features comparatively uncomfortable concave analog nubs and always caused our thumbs to easily move off-center.
Just as important, but less obvious to the naked eye, is the fact that the DualShock 4 controller's analog sticks are spaced further apart ever so slightly.
It's difficult to discern just what the extra space between the two sticks amounts to, but that added sliver of distance makes your thumb's reach less of a strain and the controller much more comfortable this time around.

im still torn on which system to get. reading about the new ds4 and seeing the pics of it though def make me less worried about the controller as i hated the ds3. im glad bf4 may use the triggers instead of l1 and r1.

As a player with fairly large hands, the previous design felt cramped and small — the DualShock 4 resolves much of these issues. The handles are more rounded and designed in such a way to conform with the palm of your hand as you play. The shoulder buttons and triggers, while not much larger than the previous iteration, feel much more natural by curving with your fingers. Most importantly, the triggers are convex (aka curve inward), which prevent your finger from sliding off as you make fast taps or when holding them down.

It's light, responsive, and comfortable -- the new thumbsticks with convex tops cradle your thumbs, and the triggers easily hold your pointer fingers. As for the face buttons, things are nigh identical with previous DualShock iterations. The standard ex / triangle / circle / square combo remains, and looks just about the same as on the DualShock 3. Though the touchpad didn't have any in-game effect in DriveClub, the pad is easily clickable and not too far from your thumbs to quickly jump from face buttons to it.

The Eye's light bar-tracking is very impressive, and allows for some fun stuff: rubbing the trackpad brings out Asobi, like a genie's lamp. There's another demo with little robots that live inside the DualShock 4, which gives you an impression of how the speaker works as well as how quickly the buttons activate. The difference between when you push the button and when you see it activate on-screen is imperceptible, as it should be.

The camera also tracks its Z-axis location in the world because of the PS4 Eye, which allows for some other neat tricks. You can use the DualShock 4 to virtually collect little robots with a vacuum, which tracks where the controller is and sucks up the guys where the controller goes (the vacuum animation even follows along with the DualShock 4 as it moves).

Their improved sensitivity and grip made getting back on the road easy. There are nice finger indentations on these triggers that make accelerating and braking feel more secure and solid than ever. Evolution did a nice job of using what Sony gave them to dial in a great drive feel.

This texture is a delight because it provides a snug, more comfortable grip on the device compared to DualShock 3’s slipperier feel. This is one of those things you’ll need to try for yourself to truly understand, but once you experience it there’s no going back. It’s a delight.
                ...
Then there are the redesigned and retuned analog sticks, which now boast a concave surface and slightly stiffer deadzone that makes it easier to maneuver the camera using small, precise movements. The surface is also more tactile, but not so much that it impedes your thumb’s ability to glide around the inner rim as your make subtle adjustments to your aiming reticule in shooters like Blacklight: Retribution. Much like DualShock 4’s new textured grips, the revamped analog sticks are a clear improvement to the classic design sported by DualShock 2 and DualShock 3. It’s no contest.

The directional pad — always a strength on PlayStation controllers — also impressed. It boasts a unified design that reminded me of PS Vita’s well-liked pad, only oversized and sporting a more tactile matte finish. The depth and response of the pad felt just right: Not too clicky, not too mushy; not too deep, not too shallow. Meanwhile, the new Share and Options buttons that have replaced Start and Select were unobtrusively placed and felt satisfyingly click — appropriate for buttons you’ll use less frequently.
                ...
Finally, the new L2 and R2 triggers are exactly what you would hope for and expect. Featuring a slightly “hooked” design and less pressure resistance, these puppies are a perfect fit for your itchy trigger finger. I was also pleased to find that DualShock 4’s L1 and L2 buttons feel almost identical to those on PS3. Why fix what ain’t broken, right? It will be interesting to see if developers of PlayStation 4 shooters enable the player to swap the firing buttons between R2 and L2 like they often do on PS3, or if R2 becomes the universal standard going forward.
Following its debut at PlayStation’s February 20th event in New York City, DualShock 4 has emerged at E3 in near-final form. Though DualShock 3 has proven to be a capable and dependable wireless controller for years with PlayStation 3, the PS4’s new weapon of choice is clearly an improvement across the board. Here are some [...]

The design sports a gentle outwards tilt that catches the bend of each finger, narrowing to a finer point. It's difficult to eulogize the effectiveness of this approach; while not quite a full hook in the style of the rival pad's, it works wonderfully well in securing each finger, and the tension needed to drive it down once again feels equitable to Microsoft's solution.

Tightened dead-zones make games like DriveClub eminently easier to control, but the bigger change here is in the friction of the sticks - increased to bring it closer to the pressure needed on the Xbox One's. The old PS3 sticks with their convex grips are often criticized for feeling a little too delicate in travel

Overall, it's striking how similar both controllers feel in this department, as if the houses of PlayStation and Xbox both independently honed in on the very same sweet-spot for grip and required pressure.

                On the buttons
Looking to the buttons, the Dual Shock 4 boasts a more tightly packed d-pad than usual, using a silkier matte texture that tapers off towards the center point.

On the right side of the pad, the 8-bit precision analogue face buttons of the last controller are swapped out for digital versions, largely due to their lack of practical use in games, but also to improve communication speeds with the PS4 console.

                On the touchpad
It's clickable like a regular laptop mouse pad, and even light touches to its surface are quick in response - in theory, an RTS game based around pinch-to-zoom and panning gestures could find a comfortable home on the platform in future.

The feel of it in your hand is very nice, and the new sticks are have a much tighter feel than the too-loose sticks on the Dual Shock 3. I think shooter fans are going to like them.
                ...
This quality feel extends to the buttons and analog sticks, which feel much less "plasticky" and more true than the Dual Shock 3's. This is especially true of the analogs, which seem to move more smoothly through their whole range of motion and have a rubberized surface.

The body, while essentially the same shape as the previous controller, is actually a bit bulkier and more contoured. The "wings" that extend out from the left and right sides fill up the palms of your hand a bit better. For me (I have fairly average sized hands), it was far more comfortable.

The higher quality components do add some more weight to the unit, which I actually prefer, but I can't really speculate whether or not people with smaller hands will find it too bulky.

The ps3 controller really isn't much smaller than the Xbox 360 controller, its more slender looking because the middle was skinny.

Oh well, they fixed the L2/R2 and joysticks so they may go back to being king of the controller hill again. We shall see.

I love the PSX controller design over any others (since PSX is where my true love for gaming started) but the 360 controller comfort level blew the DS3 out of the water. I'm hopeful for this gen.

The PS3 controller is just fine with concave trigger attachments. I almost forget people haven't bought those before.

I shoot using L1 and R1 for 3PS games, but for some reason I use L2/R2 for FPS games. Don't know what the difference is when it comes to me playing those games and doing that. Oh, I use L2/R2 for GTA though.

On a sadder note, I don't think the PSN ID on the DS4 thing will happen. It may have just been one of the things thrown around during GDC, but never actually implemented. Shame. It was such an awesome idea, too.
