Everybody is biased to some degree, but very similar sentiments to this patent were posted when rumors broke last January that the next Xbox was anti-used games.

I doubt that. And in fact when (I believe last year??) when it was rumored MS was looking into the same thing it was responded too with the same thoughts, at least from me. I can't see ANYONE wanting no used games ability.

Edit: Flawless already touched on it...

        Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

From WSJ article: "Mr. Tretton conceded that removing that capability, along with a few other features, isn't dramatically reducing Sony's cost of manufacturing the console but will instead encourage buyers of the entry-level PlayStation 3 to purchase more games designed specifically for the new system."

Concedes is the operative term there, IMO.

The original article didn't give the exact quotes, but it reads as spin from others trying to put words in his mouth.

Interviewer: "Will removing backwards compatibility encourage more PS3 game purchases?"
        Tretton: "Yes"

Headline: Sony removes backwards compatability to force people to buy PS3 games

I don't buy it, Sony/Toshiba lost a lawsuit around the Emotion Engine right around PS3 launch, which would have cost them something like $10 per console, so they removed the EE and emulated it. Going forward they faced a **** storm from angry European customers saying they were getting an inferior product. Having dabbled in emulator development myself, the work increases exponentially as the compatibility level goes up, meaning Sony was facing a high development bill. Faced with console manufacturing costs, development costs, PR costs, support costs, Sony cut PS2 backwards compatibility. As to why Tretton was led to say something that could have been construed as it was? Kind of hard to say they infringed on a patent and blame users for not being cooperative.

...or that's just what he said, rather than it being misconstrued that way. I am pretty sure if he was misrepresented in the Wall Street Journal about such a controversial issue steps would have been taken to correct it.

Tretton seems to often break from the PR along with many of the Sony execs who have many regrettable quotes.

This is all way off topic though, that was just one anecdote about Sony and common sense, relating to the anti-rental stuff.

              Oribis Roadmap

              2011 June/July – PC with Win7 64-bit and a “jailbroken” ATI r9 graphics card
              2011 Sept/Oct – PC with Win7 64-bit and a “jailbroken” ATI r10 graphics card
              2012 Q1 – disclosure to more developers
              2012 E3 – potential unveiling window start
2012 Jul – devkits for engineers writing OS
2012 Q3 – first true hardware prototype devkits
              2013 E3 – potential unveiling window end
              2013 Q4 – launch
              PS4 "Orbis"
              - AMD x86 3.2GHz APU Solution (Jaguar/Steamroller), 4 cores (2 core pairs), [Higher Clock than X720/Durango]
              - Maybe AMD 8000 series GPU solution [Customised Solution Possibly utilising GPU + APU combo]
              - 2-4GB GDDR5
              - Launch Fall 2013/Early 2014

Explanation: PS4 has a higher clock, but less cores and is using an APU solution (CPU & GPU elements combined onto a single chip). The PS4 has less RAM but is using faster GDDR ram, so the overall performance should be a wash.

In Japanese hospitals they don't use the number four in room numbers. It is considered bad luck in Japan.

Orbis is fine with me. They could call it Playstation Platypus for all I care. I am intrigued though by the "Steam Box." If there is Backward compatibility for the "Orbis" that would sway me a lot. If not, I am more of a Free Agent.

Why do they call it the PlayStation Orbis, though? Why not just call it the Orbis?

Kind of a long name there... Sony PlayStation Orbis. Sony Orbis? Eh, I don't know. Just thinking up different ideas.

Hopefully they come up with something better if they won't use 4.

That's probably just a project name.

I just don't see that as a very marketable name.
