"Xbox 360, underbalanced. PlayStation 3, underbalanced. Simply because memory is the most expensive part, hence I wish there would be cheaper ways of doing memory so that memory doesn't become an issue anymore.
due to the fact that the cost of CPU and memory are so much more expensive than they were in the past, it is simply impossible to have the same kind of impact on the console business; to be so far ahead of PC.

Memory will always be a limiting factor on consoles, but it isn't cheap. It cost Microsoft a billion dollars to up the 360' RAM from 256MB to 512MB before launch. Also, a common misconception is desktop RAM = console RAM. These companies aren't hitting up Newegg for sticks of RAM. Console RAM is used very differently and in the past has generally been fast RAM. With the PS4, GDDR5 isn't cheap, and going with more but slower RAM would starve a 1.8TF GPU (there's a reason why modern GPUs have GDDR5 on board). And adding any large amount of slower RAM in addition to GDDR5 would exponentially increase board complexity, therefore cost. The next Xbox is apparently going with more but slower RAM, but will have 32MB of eSRAM (which is expensive) and data move engines to mitigate the low bandwith of starving their machine.

The WSJ is confirming what we all saw in Sony's slick video teaser for its upcoming February 20th event: Sony will be announcing the PlayStation 4. Citing the ol' reliable 'people familiar with the matter', the WSJ says that the PS4 will be announced on February 20th and be released later this year.

The WSJ also reports that Sony will try to throw in more "social gaming aspects" in the PS4, focusing more on how people "interact with the machine" than the sheer hardware power of the system. Sony had considered ditching the disk drive and using game downloads but decided that video game file sizes would be too large and Internet connections may be too slow to handle the load. Which means we can still expect the ol' disk bay to be in the PS4. The announcement of the PS4 will beat Microsoft's Xbox 360 successor to the punch, it's unclear if the actual next generation system will too. Both are expected to launch by this holiday season.

The worst thing too is that there was a quote today of Sony possibly thinking of upping that 4GB GDDR5 to 8GB. Hell, I would love to get that 8GB in the PS4, but that means the price of the console goes up considerable since GDDR5 is not cheap at all. GDDR5 is not even being used in PC systems yet as standard RAM, except on videocards.

The wording of that part in the EDGE article is weird, because you wouldn't need 8GB of GDDR5 to "match" 8GB of DDR3. Not to mention the rumors of the next Xbox having 3GB reserved for the OS.

If Sony somehow managed to make it affordable and not break the bank, then awesome. It's not just cost though, heat would be a concern too with needing 16 4Gbit chips instead 8 4Gbit chips. It's not impossible, but it doesn't seem very realistic to me, unless their not using GDDR5.

Agree..$399 should be the max and I hope we see only one damn sku thought the whole lifetime, got so tired of seeing slim, slimmer, very annoying

            Bloomberg

Sony’s new console will feature graphics chips developed by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) and processors capable of rendering games at 240 frames a second, Pachter said. Current-generation games typically render at 30 or 60 frames per second. As with past model changes, Sony would continue to produce and sell the almost 7-year-old PlayStation 3 for some time.

            240 frames per second..wow really.

Probably like the PS3 displaying two 1080p screens at once. Remember that one from Sony PR?

Let's not get caught up in the MS and Sony Marketing hype.

Hopefully they'll have some real time game footage to show on the 20th and not just tech demos.

I don't think we will see any tech demos. This is more about hey here is your first look at the PS4 and controller. We will have a ton of info to share with you at E3.

It never will be, GDDR5 sacrifices latency for raw throughput. GPUs need to push a lot of data fast, but doesn't need small random chunks of data. CPUs are the opposite of that.

GDDR5 is based on DDR3, GDDR3 is based on DDR2. DDR4 will be out later this year, GDDR6 will likely hit next year.

Just based on the specs what would be the rough estimate for how the new consoles might stack up with current high end PC's? I mean how big of a jump will we actually see, and not just in terms of looks but in terms of other things like physics and ai. I have read a couple of articles saying that the new consoles will be outclassed by current high end PC's by a pretty wide margin. For the more computer savy individuals out there (which I am not), does that seem like it will probally be the case based on the leaked specs?

If that is the case I may actually considering going PC route next gen, espcially if motion control becomes a much larger focus on the next generation of consoles. I am not sure I could part with some of the console exclusives though.

Of course it's outclassed by a high end PC, you are talking a $1000+ piece of hardware vs a $400-ish piece of hardware.
