Why on earth have both Sony and MS decided they need so much memory for the OS? I get the feeling we are going to be getting a really slick OS that really doesn't mean much to people who are just pure gamers.

Just seems odd to dedicate so much memory for the OS since it wasn't billed to be the all encompassing, multitasking, multimedia console the XBox One is selling itself to be.

This was supposed to be the purely about games console. What I don't understand is why they need (3.5 GB? basically like XB1 or there about) for the OS?

I was looking forward to both consoles being quite different in that respect (I ordered both). This just keeps bringing them closer & closer to one another.

Bottom line for me is I'll just see for myself in the end when they're both out and I can see how they both function/perform.

I assume it's to allow the OS to grow in features (360 is a lot different) without having it bog down.

Both consoles are moving toward becoming entertainment hubs. Started this generation. Its not just about games anymore. Sony has just been saying the right things to gamers.

Even if you were to disregard the RAM, there's still the difference in GPU power.

It's all messaging. Sony has chosen to message strongly to the core gamer, which is smart on their part because it's the kind of consumer who is most likely to drop $400 or more at launch. The PS4 was always going to have lots of multimedia functionality because there's no such thing as a games only console anymore; that console would fail today.

Also, OS footprints can and have shrunk in the past. I remember the PS3's was something pretty monstrous before launch.

Almost half of your 8GBs of RAM just for the OS really seems overkill to me. I get both companies desire "entertainment hubs," but this really detracts from the package. Why not simplify the OS and dedicate as many resources as possible to make the in-game experience that much better?

I wouldn't care if the XMB was a bunch of 8-bit screens with toggles and pixel graphics.

According to some trusted posters on GAF, the 3.5gb comes from adding 1.5 for the OS, 1.0 for future proofing, and 1.0 developer reserve.

So, right now, the PS4's OS only uses the 1.5 gigs, which can eventually be reduced after some optimization over the years. A good amount of this 1.5gb helps with the HD recording feature and on the fly switching/ multitasking.

They reserved 1.0 for future OS flexibility, in case they want to add some possibly useful features to the OS at a later point.

Remember cross-game voice chat in PS3? Or all those other "why can't the PS3 do this while the XBox can" things? Stuff like that is why this kind of planning is important. Sony doesn't have a clue what we're going to expect the hardware to do in 5 years, let alone 10 - this gives them the flexibility to adapt to that.

The remaining 1.0gb is reserved for developers, should they need it. But this 1gb is in heap memory, not in stack for now. This will probably be more of a factor for future games anyway, since launch titles never really take full advantage of the hardware anyway.

In summary, the amount of RAM that the OS uses can be reduced, but can't be increased, over the life of the console. It is disappointing to hear that it's not 7gb out of the 8 which is immediately available for the devs as previously speculated, but I guess this is better than having to deal with another situation like missing cross game chat and a slow/laggy OS and PS Store. The 4.5gb Eurogamer mentioned devs can access is the absolute floor. Devs currently have access to 5.5gb, and it can only go up from there, even though it will probably take some time.

Devs have also said that size doesnt matter. And that the better bandwidth and speed (of the PS4's GDDR5) does.

Why is it a big deal? We've spent the past 7+ years playing games with 512MB of RAM. Now all of a sudden we can only use lets say 4.5GB of the 8GB of RAM on the PS4 for games and it's not enough? Are we serious here?! Games like Halo, Gears of War, Uncharted, Forza, Battlefield, The Last of Us, etc all ran beautifully with 512MB of RAM.

I don't understand people. No offence to you Quint or anybody else but honestly gamers are the problem in todays gaming world. 4.5GB for games on a console and that's not good enough?.... I don't get it anymore.

A big part of the problem is exactly what Game Informer said about this:

4.5GB of GDDR5 is still a huge bonanza of high-speed memory for developers to work with in 2013, but will we still be saying that in five years when Nvidia is rolling out unified CPU/GPU architecture with 16GB of similarly fast RAM for $200 tablets? As sexy as the PS4/XB1 tech specs are today, remember that they’re broadly similar to mid/high-end PCs available right now and that technology gets faster and cheaper every day. Ten years is a long time to lock in a hardware spec for, and I question the wisdom of both Sony and Microsoft cutting their systems off at the knees like this.
The less we get now, the more likely we are to run into memory related issues much like this past gen. There's still plenty of poor AI going around because there is only so much they can do. Especially for non-first party games.

Yeah, I look at it like this; Even at worst case, we're still working with 10 times the RAM of this current gen. And there have been some pretty impressive games that made it work. Just imagine The Last of Us (x10), MLB The Show (x10) and so on...

I think that people are mainly complaining because we were expecting 7gb of the 8gb to be available to developers, but now it's been decreased. I agree, though, that 4.5gb (actually, it's 5.5gb) is more than enough for now.

I don't know if GI said anything else about the current memory situation, but it's actually better that Sony is reserving 2.5 gb for its OS (1.5gb) and for future expansion (1gb). They can't afford to have the same situation happen with the PS3 where there wasn't enough RAM available to the OS, which is why they were never able to implement cross-game party chat and a slow/laggy PSN Store.

Once the OS is optimized in the future, Sony can devote more of that RAM to games. They cannot, however, decide to devote more RAM to the OS in the future if they already gave full access to it to the developers. This is because if games are expecting that extra RAM to be available and it no longer is, it won't be able to run anymore.

Well I'm pretty much set and ready for the PS4.
The only current gen games I have are the ones I plan to keep forever. Everything else has been sold/traded in.

I have roughly 150.00 left and my PS4, Madden 25, BF4 and Watch Dogs will be paid off.
I am going to go ahead and add an extra controller.

All I need now is a firm release date.

Same here man. Put another $100 down on the PS4 yesterday with gift cards, so now I only owe $200 and it's paid off. I've already paid off Battlefield 4 with trade ins as well, and that is the only game I plan on buying at launch at this moment.

As far as the PS3 goes, i'm currently running through some old games I've wanted to play for a second go around before the PS4 comes out. I'm probably 3/4 of the way through Deus Ex: Human Revolution for the second time, and it's just as good as I remembered. I really hope they get a sequel underway for the PS4 in the near future.

GTAV is the last game I'll pick up for the PS3 at full retail in all likelihood. That will definitely tide me over until the PS4, and even after the PS4 drops, the PS3 is going in the bedroom, and i'm sure i'll continue to play PS3 games for quite some time. Especially GTA.

My Gamestop preorder has been paid off (Console, Games, Controller, and Camera). I was going to trade in my 360 but decided not to and just saved my money to pay off my preorder items from Gamestop. I will keep my 360 around to have a back up console for my son in case his takes a dump. He is a big 360 gamer and has a lot of friends who are on live so he will still be using his 360.

Here is my list of preordered items from Gamestop:

                                Sony Playstation 4
                                PS4 Dual Shock 4
