I knew I was missing something... I was like, "are these guys seriously buying this?"

Really, it sounds like nothing. If it were something major it would have been leaked by several sources now. If it were an issue with RAM, developers would have to be notified and there's no way that would be kept quiet.

Are people this gullible? Holy cow there isn't going to be an issue as far as downgrading. Lay off the drugs.

With 'every xbox one can be a dev kit' leaking before it's official announcement at gamescon next month, the headlines this morning are Sony is loaning out their $2500 dev kit 'like candy' to indie devs free for a year.

The tit for tat continues. We all win.

PS4 ships with 8GB of unified GDDR5. Digital Foundry reveals how much game-makers have to work with.

Here is the article that was all the rage on Twitter last night.

Yeah, just details RAM availability, 4.5gb available for gaming 3.5gb for the OS, up to 1gb may be taken from the OS if it is available but isn't trivial and is expected to be something only first parties use initially.

So my question is: What the hell were they thinking about with 4GB of RAM at first? No wonder they upped it.

Waiting for more details. No source was mentioned (other than the slides from the Killzone presentation?).

The guy who wrote this article is the same one that reported the spontaneous 80% XBone eSRAM bandwidth increase that he couldn't explain when called on it.

I am dubious about it being 3.5 GB right now. This should be confirmed or debunked pretty quickly though, since they suggest that anyone with a dev kit knows about this and Sony have been throwing dev kits around to everyone and their uncle.

Also, didn't they delay the article because Sony was gonna make a comment? I don't see anything from them in the article.

Interesting... a little more than what MS uses but MS uses a very good system with the hypervisor for the virtual OS.

As far as the downgrading the 8GB to 4GB was ridiculous. Way too late in the cycle and Newegg?

                        Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

Eurogamer servers are getting slammed... but here is the story:

The PlayStation 4 reserves 3.5GB of GDDR5 its 8GB memory for the operating system, leaving 4.5GB of space for game code, according to current documentation PS4 shown to Digital Foundry by a well-placed source in the studio. However, other sources suggest that an additional 1GB of "flexible memory" can be claimed of booking OS, based on availability.

Sony's internal documents say 4.5GB is the base amount of memory available for game developers guaranteed (notice the memory usage in the demo Killzone: Shadow Fall) and probably what most of the launch games will use. However, other sources close to Sony indicate that programmers can borrow up to 1GB of additional "flexible memory" and use it to improve elements of the game - but only if the OS background to be able to lend. They told us that this is not trivial to incorporate, and can even be initially only internal studios seek their usage.

The current development kits PS4 has a "Save Mode for Memory Game" in the settings that you have two options: normal and large. The normal mode confirms that the memory 4.5GB are usable for gaming applications. The big way that increases considerably to 5.25GB, but the documents are clear in that the extra RAM here is only available for application development, presumably to accommodate data debug. As we know, the gig extra flexible memory seems to work in addition to these concessions.

The news that the OS reserves the PS4 is on the same level as the equivalent of Xbox 3GB One will surely surprise many, especially given that previous documents from Sony who escaped just spoke 512MB allocated to programs in the system - although this information reassemble the era in which the new PlayStation would be launched with only 4GB of memory.

I'm really looking forward to the whole save video feature. I have so many 2k13 highlights but it's a hassle to go into the game and watch it/load up. It be so much better when you saved a highlight it go straight to your PS3 video folder for easy viewing.

Hopefully those days are gone with the PS4.

You can share them to Facebook, Ustream or Youtube, so no need to keep them on the device. If you don't want them public but just for yourself then you can just change the privacy settings on your account(s) or video(s).

Both consoles have a hypervisor that can dynamically shift around resources. We know more specifics about the Xbox One than the PS4, but I don't imagine one is that much more capable than the other.

Agreed. And the fact that multi platform game developers are not going to optimize their game for one console over the other makes this all a wash anyway. We seen it with the last Gen, we will see that again this next Gen.

Lets move on to the good stuff now, when do these consoles release!
