I wasn't really blown away by the playthrough YouTube clip honestly.

It was pretty good but nothing struck me as spectacular or "system seller" in the slightest.

            Neither was I. Looked like a game I would've played in 2007.

Finally sent one of my PS4 sticks in for repair (doing them both one at a time)...now I start my countdown to when I get it back.

I have questions about the Wireless Gold Headset: Are chat and game volume independent of one another? And are they easily accessible via the headset itself, or is this a setting I have to access through the XMB? For $80, I'm really starting to consider these.

They are on the headset themselves, chat & game volume are independently adjustable but you use the same buttons to adjust either one.

I'm at work, I'm sure someone will give you a better explanation.

                      Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

Since the gaming monitor talk peaked interest here in the PS4 thread, I figured it would be best to address couple things before someone just runs out and buys a monitor.

When it comes to monitors you kind of have to pick and choose the strength you want out of the monitor. Do your research on these areas.

                      1) Response Time - I'd say 2ms is what everyone should shoot far with a max 5ms. Any higher than 5 and you will start to experience ghosting. Which is blurring of the image or double image behind a moving image if the response time is really bad.

                      2) Refresh Rate - Most games we know on past consoles ran at 30 fps and now the new consoles are pushing 60 fps. So you want a min of 60hz refresh rate on your monitor with higher supported a big plus for future proofing. Basically how many times is the image displayed to the screen makes for a smoother experience. Now with all that said, this is far more important for gaming PC's because your rig will dictate how many frames per sec you can achieve, where on consoles you are locked to the native fps.

                      3) Panel Type - This is where the "pick and choose what strength you want out of your monitor" comes into play. Basically you have 2 popular panel types TN/VA's and IPS/PLS's. You break it down simply.

                      TN/VA
                      • Extremely fast response times make them extremely popular. 1ms to 2ms is accessible for almost anyone budget wise.
                      • Lower quality viewing angles, so you not going to get great off angle color distribution.
                      • Color accuracy is lacking to a extent on most. While you can achieve color accuracy that would never make the average Joe notice something is amiss. They will not produce the most accurate colors compared to a good IPS/PLS.

                      IPS/PLS
                      • Excellent color accuracy and used mainly as photo editing monitors.
                      • Slower response time is a major draw back with 5ms to 8ms being common and some response times even getting as high as the 13ms range. This can greatly hurt your gaming experience.
                      • Great viewing angles is a slight perk but not anything that should change your buying decision.

                      4) Contrast ratios - Make sure to do plenty of research on what the black/white levels are like on the monitor you are looking at. You want a monitor which will display the slightest changing in lighting from the blackest black to the brightest white and show each slight change in between. This is critical for shadow detail in current games.
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So you need to choose, do you want great color accuracy while sacrificing for higher response times or do you want lighting fast response times & "good" colors.

For me I wanted two things, 27" screen and accurate colors. I'm a stickler who re-calibrates my monitor once every 2 to 3 months. I like seeing the exact Braves blue or the smallest shadow detail on a player in MLB The show. I was willing to sacrifice with a 5ms response time to get the color accuracy I wanted, so I went with a PLS monitor.

I went with the Samsung S27D590
                      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001917

Now with everything I mentioned it does feature all the drawbacks you would expect but also the positives I was looking for. It has the big 27" screen to make gaming at my desk really feel as if I'm still gaming on a big screen in the living room. It has fantastic color accuracy and required only the smallest adjustment to hue out the box of any monitor I've setup. Yet the 5ms response time can be seen in effect on games with fast movement such as madden or need for speed, I do get slight blurring of fast objects. Another drawback is black levels, while my white levels are fantastic, the blacks can get a bit washed out in the corners on really dark scenes if I play at night. During the day it is not as noticeable, but the back light required on these panels means they won't achieve black levels of a plasma like Art mentioned.

All in all I hope this helps if anyone is serious about looking for a PS4 gaming monitor. Once you go that route, I don't think you will ever go back to a TV. Just make sure to do plenty of research on these key areas.

Side Note - Make sure you check how many HDMI inputs the monitor has. Don't make the mistake and thinking they all have them because they don't. That was another selling factor for me with the Sammy. 2 HDMI ins means I can hook up my PC gaming machine and PS4 to same monitor.

Right. There's a master volume and a chat/sound volume. Chat/sound can be adjusted to all chat with no game sounds or vice versa or anywhere in between.

Great write up Phobia, my monitor is 2ms and has HDMI. But mine is only 24" not 27".

I too am a stickler and have presets created for different games.

                              Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

I'm way too old for console flame bs, - I'm seriously considering trading in my xbox one + 3 games and grabbing a ps4.

Last gen I was 360, so it might be nice for a change and have something new.

My question is - have any of you done this and if so what value can I expect in terms of having to pay anything on top of the trade etc.?

Can you hear the PS4 running - is it noisy?
                              Does it get really warm/hot?
Does the controller in the box come only with an internal battery - IE is that the only option? (I'm using great rechargeable AA's with the xbox one.
How is the Wifi? I find it very impressive the the xbone and can only use that with my current setup to play online, so does the ps4 have the chops to play bf4 online via wifi?

I also saw interesting video on youtube comparing bf4 between the 2 systems, the xbone actually had much more detail because of the higher contrast, but I have that game and notice that in dark areas it's REALLY dark and hard to see (mentioned by others as well) and some bright areas are practically blown out. I was really surprised to see more detail, but on the sharing videos from both systems my overall impression just taking it in as a whole is that the ps4 share vids look more impressive. Is there a difference in draw distance while sniping for example? Does anyone own it for both?
Maybe the xbone has more texture mapping software, but the ps4 has better overall performance such as anti-aliasing?? It's strange to me

I see that it has netflix as well, so besides the few downloaded arcade games I have, I don't think I'll be out too much cash.

There is also a really stupid rumour out there saying MSoft is forcing 3rd party developers to keep games looking relatively the same across all platforms holding the ps4 back. I doubt that's true because I don't see how they could really enforce that....

In anycase, it's not that I'm not happy with the xbone, I just want change and to play things I missed out on like last of us and just have a more future-proof system. I have a really nice 1080p LED TV and don't like the fact that in many cases I'll be playing games at 720p ... I know it's not everything but it's 2014 dammit! I want my TV to be running on all cylinders.
I also bought a turtle beech xo 4's and might see if I can trade at least the adapter in too - can I use the headset and mic simply by plugging it into the ps4 controller?

Any thoughts or advice is appreciated, no rush I'm looking to do this over the next month or so...
