base drive is fine if you do not have tons of games you want to go back to without installing and you do not play tons of big open world games

    The Witcher 3
    Dark Souls 3
    BloodBorne
    GTA 5

Right off the top those games are huge and have long load times.

An SSD which you can get for about 500 gb for 120 dollars is going to load those games much much faster.

I know because I have an SSD on the xbox 1

The Witcher 3 has some long loading sections and it reduces it a ton with the SSD. It might not be worth it for some but it does not mean is not worth it for the majority

I saw someone on Twitter ask a dev from MS to release info on how many people use external drives and I am waiting to see those numbers which I bet will be huge as well on PS4 with internal

Tomb Raider 2013 is a good game but Rise of the Tomb Raider is so much better in every possible way. I bought Xbox One mainly because I didn't want to wait a year to play the game and it was well worth it and im going to buy it again for PS4 as im definitely wanting to play through it again. That's how good the game is.

This gen with ps4 I paid 400 so 100 less but I am going to have to get a bigger hard drive. So really its not like I paid less really. I don't delete games or trade games in other then maybe sports games because I like to go back from time to time and play something I haven't played in a well. Right now I am down to like 44 GB and that is with only 9 games on the hard drive and I don't normally even get DLC or put music on it or any thing like that but I do have DLC for drive club has the DLC made it like a new game and for batman arkham knight has it is one of my favorite games of all time. So another game maybe 2 and I may be out of space depending on how big those games or 2 are.
True. I stopped collecting games once PS2 was dead. I would have several games on disc at a time last gen for Xbox 360 but for whatever reason, I would never play them so I decided to stop doing that. I try to go one game at a time because if I play multiple games at the same time, I end up not finishing any of them. And of course, I do want to trade them in and get back at least half of what I paid. I don't rush the games and in fact, I usually drag out most games especially if im really enjoying it since I don't want it to end.

Back to the space, it's also because last gen, the install sizes were smaller. I had 31 games and DLC add-ons installed on Xbox 360 and they only added up to 100GB combined. This generation, disc sizes are much larger and when you add in patches and DLC, it blows away last generation.

Currently, I have 10 PSN/Indie games and three disc based games on the HDD. The Witcher 3, TLOUR and AC Unity. Unity is on disc but installed. Other two are digital. I still have over 200GB of space. Honestly, I'll be shocked if the 500GB HDD doesn't last me the entire generation. Those three top tier disc based games take up about 150GB combined so probably at most, you would only be able to fit 8 games on the HDD.

Anything digital, I keep installed. Disc wise, once the game is gone, I delete the install. At 44GB, im thinking that you can fit one more main game. Maybe two if one of them is small like No Man's Sky. It definitely sucks in regards to space this generation due to the games being bigger.

Yeah, I can understand those who keep their games as well as those who buy games digitally especially big retail disc based games but otherwise, don't really need to upgrade. The loading difference isn't a big deal to me either. I sat through a few hours of Bloodborne when it had to load so anything else is a walk in the park. I do understand why people upgrade though.

As someone who's playing through The Witcher 3 a second time, I agree in regards to load times but it's not a big enough problem or negative to me to warrant buying a bigger hard drive or a solid state drive. I definitely understand why majority upgrade their HDD's and/or use externals. I'm definitely in the minority here. LOL.

I may get close to the limit come October/November with Mafia III, ROTTR, Battlefield 1, COD and Watch Dogs 2. Even at 50GB each, I'll still have a little space left over since I'll be finished with AC Unity by then. Once each game is finished and traded in, then I delete them off the hard drive. If I kept the games or purchased them digitally, then yeah, I would probably have to upgrade eventually. With this generation being possibly half over, I don't think that I'll reach that point.

yea am with you on having tons of games for no reason on hard drive. I keep only what am playing on a regular basis which is about 4 to 5 games and move on

If you never experienced an SSD on the ps4 or even xb1 then do not bother because if you do and then go back to Stock you will change your tune

I have been playing tons of witcher 3 and load times were super quick and once I put the stock back in because I put the ssd on the xb1 the witcher 3 became a pain to deal with. IMO

I have never used an SSD but I have no doubt that the SSD is superior to the HDD, offers faster load times and better value but as of right now, for me personally, it's not needed. However, if that time ever comes, once I use an SSD, I won't go back to an HDD. I would just keep the SSD and hope that it would be compatible with the next console.

I heard the 2013 game is good but not has good has the one that came out last year but like I said you can get the 2013 one pretty cheap so I have thought about getting it and if I like it then maybe I will get this one to has it would only be 45 with the best buy gamers thing. Well I do have that issue with trying to finishes games because I like to play video games a lot but I also love sports and between watching sports, working, sleeping there is just not a lot of hours in the day for me to play games. I fell like my backlot of games is always growing lol. Yes last gen games where smaller but they also didn't have to be installed now ever game has to be installed. So not matter if you play games by disk or digital they take up the same amount of space. I have like 3-4 times has many games on my ps3 has I do on my ps4 yet I have used up only like 108 GB on ps3 compared to like 456 or so on ps4. Last gen a 120 GB ps3 was like just enough for me. This gen 500 is like nothing lol. I think 1 TB is like the lowest and I very well may need a 2 TB hard drive to get me though this gen. If ps5 goes up that much I may need a 20 TB hard drive next gen lol.

                  Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

A little while ago I put a 1TB SSD (Samsung 850 EVO) in my PS4. I got it for a good price off Amazon and already had 2 SSDs in my PC so I figured why not. There is definitely a performance boost on my console but due to SATA2, as you probably already know, it just is literally impossible to get the full benefits of it.

I wouldn't flat our recommend anyone go out and buy one just to put it in their PS4, but if you have one lying around or can get one on sale/have the money to spend then there is no downside to upgrading. It won't hurt anything at all and will provide some decent boosts here and there.

I was really hoping NEO and Scorpio would upgrade to SATA3 but it probably won't be until the next generation of consoles that we get lightning fast HD performance, unfortunately. At least that's the impression I get from what I have read but could be wrong, for sure.

If Sony ever allows external storage then it will improve the performance of the SSD when you are dealing with USB 3.0 instead of the SATA2

This is why SSD on the XB1 with the 3.0 USB allows a bit of faster loading.

Is the PS4 ever going to allow external support?

I put a 1TB in mine only because I get every game digital. It's been over a year since I had a physical disc. My stack is in a closet at the back of my theater so there is no way I'm getting out of my chair to walk back and switch games every time I change. Giving up the trade in value from games I don't play anymore was tough but in the end I'm willing to take the hit for the convenience. Only issue is I had a nightmare of a time trying to get them to authorize my new hard drive since it's recognizing it as an entirely new system. Until I got it registered if my internet was down or I had connection issues I could not play any of my games since it couldn't authorize my license.

Yeah, as someone who cut the cord (but will probably pay for NFLST for mom's DirecTV) that's a pretty big deal in the event we need multiple streams or something. Certainly makes Vue an option for NFL fans in the fall, love all flavors of Red Zone.
