Its funny you ask as I was just about to write a long post about that. I have some general thoughts about today I was hoping to bring up and get some opinions on. I will just skip the long, overdrawn type of post I usually ramble on in and just get straight to the meat and potatoes.

I was at GS just now paying off the Pro and I looked at the One S bundles on the wall.

It kind of made me think.

Is the PS4 Slim overpriced? When I go get my PS4 next week I will spent 360 plus tax (getting M17 as well). I can get the 1TB One S bundle for 350 plus tax. For my money, doesn't it seem like the One S is, by a pretty healthy margin, the better deal? UHD , 4k streaming, bigger HD. Especially knowing that MS said they will be offering a trade up deal for the Scorpio.

The Pro has a great price tag. 400 bucks for a twice as powerful PS4 is great. I know the UHD player missing is a big deal but I heard Sony's rep on this is basically continuing what they said at launch "we are focused on games."

The Xbox S seems to be a much better deal than the PS4 Slim, however. If I am planning on just selling it once the Pro hits, I guess it doesn't matter. Waiting another two months without gaming with my PS4 friends will suck too, plus I have a lot of games on my PSN account. So maybe the PS4 Slim is still the best bet for me to bridge the gap to Pro, but I still had to come home and think about it a little bit.

As far as the Pro, I have some general thoughts.

A.) A number of people called it, as far as what the Pro is. NYG in particular claimed that the specs wouldn't be upgraded and basically it is a "they are who we thought they were" situation with todays unveiling. I said I would be shocked if the Pro wasn't updated from the leaked specs and I was dead wrong. I admit it, and will hold the L on that one

B.) The pro is still what I wanted, and it is cheaper than I expected. I had hoped for upgraded specs but I really went into it content with the leaked info anyway. It is twice as powerful as the PS4 and that is plenty of power for 1080p gaming for awhile. I think over time we will see more and more comparison vids showing the benefits of the Pro and once we have it in front of us we will love playing games like Witcher 3 and The Show with improved fidelity and rendering.

C.) That conference was awful. Please be more exciting next time, Sony.

D.) I really wonder what the price of the Scorpio is going to end up being. If they can pull it off for 500 bucks or less, considering the huge power difference between it and Pro, it seems like it will crush the Pro pretty handily.

E.) Horizon and Days gone look AMAZING. Even CoD looked fantastic on the 4k stream.

Honestly Xbox should be doing this right now, they are in the middle of potentially a huge momentum shift.

They flanked Sony pretty hard with all this.

        EDIT

My dilemma right now is deciding between putting money aside for PSVR or trying to find a nice 4k HDR monitor at some point

Nice post, good points/observations and well thought out.

Yeah I agree, Microsoft is looking pretty good right now with their Xbox One S model, it's great value and is extremely aesthetically pleasing IMO. It's still less powerful than the current PS4 and when the Pro comes out it will be significantly overpowered, though that doesn't matter much as the Scorpio will be coming in about a year's time.

I think the Scorpio will be at least $500, I can honestly see it being around $800 as Microsoft themselves described it as a "premium" product.

The fact that the Pro isn't upgraded at all compared to the leaked specs is puzzling and definitely seems as if the Scorpio and One S caught them off guard, maybe they are banking on the Scorpio being very expensive and putting some people off. Hardcore enthusiasts will still purchase it though just as they will buy the PS4 Pro.

I would agree that when you compare the Xbox One S to the PS4 slim, the One S is the better deal in terms of what you get. It's odd to me that they didn't decide to upgrade the hard drive on the slim though.

I pre-ordered the Pro as well and I'm excited to get my hands on it, even if it does look like a triple-decker bus. The power of it will be really nice, definitely excited to see The Witcher 3 on it, should be substantially nicer than the Xbox One version I have. I don't get the frame-rate locking thing that Sony is going with though, that seems like a huge mistake to me. Is it just for MP or also for Single Player?

All in all, I was hyped before the conference and during for awhile, but once more information came out and my hype settled, it was definitely an underwhelming conference IMO.

                Here is my main question:

Will doubled-up GPU power help with pop-in and view distance? Or is that more of a RAM and HD speed thing (RAM only marginally faster, HD speed seems untouched).

The biggest games won't come close to rendering native 4K. Checkerboard rendering methods and Cerny himself during the presentation saying "temporal 4K". Same will be true of Scorpio and I'm also in agreement with id Software's lead render programmer, it's a waste of resources. Unless we were talking about an 8+TF part.

Other devs in a agreement too, resources better spent elsewhere.

Sony's customer service is the worst. I had my account hacked years ago on PSN and they were brushing me off like I was the one annoying them.

Yeah SBauer wrote some great posts at the end of the conference thread regarding Sony capping FPS for multiplayer games. It appears that, frame rate wise, Pro will not get benefits in order to maintain a level playing field. Definitely seems like people are on both sides of the fence about that.

And yeah I am not a huge fan of the design choices

I might sound like a broken record, and I apologize if I do, but I almost wish 4k hadn't become such a buzzword for these things. Personally I think they can really prove their worth (Scorpio and Pro being they) with how they use that power to render at 1080p. Let's get some PC High quality graphics on console.

                            From Engadget:

According to Peter Wyse, SVP of production and development at Warner Bros. Interactive, there are two optimized rendering options available to PS4 Pro developers. "Resolution mode" made lets them lock games into a resolution beyond 1080p (I've found 1440p works well in PC gaming). "Quality mode," on the other hand, dynamically scales the resolution depending on the game is performing. Wyse says you can expect resolutions that are up to 90 percent close to 4K in that mode.

Shadow of Mordor, a WB title, looked great on the PS4 Pro, even though it wasn't running completely in 4K. There was more detail in player outfits and the environment, and on the whole it looked just as good as it does on a powerful PC. The same was true for Rise of the Tomb Raider -- at one point, I could make out the plumage of a bird sitting on a cliffside. Most players likely won't notice if PS4 Pro titles don't reach 4K completely, so long as the results they're seeing look better than the standard PS4.

To be clear, true 4K rendering is possible as well on the PS4 Pro, but it looks like we'll only see it on some titles. Bethesda has the Elder Scrolls Online actually running 4K, but that's a game that also benefits from an engine that scales across a wide variety of PC hardware, from integrated laptop graphics to powerful GPUs. And graphically it's not nearly as detailed as most AAA games. According to Matthew Firor, the game's director, it didn't take much effort to get it up and running on the PS4 Pro. And since he's mainly been developing for the PC, his team is used to creating games that scale with incremental hardware upgrades.

Here's the thing gamers will have to get used to: 4K doesn't matter as much as you think. The PS4 Pro's real power will be in running games higher than 1080p and together with high-dynamic range lighting. (Sony is also making HDR available to all PS4 models via a firmware update.) The higher resolutions will make things look sharper and more detailed overall, while the HDR lighting will give bright scenes and shadows more depth. Both The Last of Us and Uncharted 4 looked strikingly different on the PS4 Pro, thanks to the graphical upgrades. (Though Naughty Dog might have downplayed just how good the games looked on the previous hardware to make the new gear seem better.)

Compared to the Xbox One S, which is basically just upscaling existing games, the PS4 Pro is effectively a "4K gaming" machine. And unfortunately for Microsoft, it won't have a real 4K competitor until Project Scorpio debuts next year.

He probably has an android phone lmao. All jokes aside that's crazy that they got around both authentications.

NBA2K is the standard of sports games period.

Both systems are great, no bashing needed.

HAHAHA. I saw that earlier and laughed too. Games are definitely better for me on PS4 but that's based on personal preference. Funny thing is that the Xbox One Slim looks like a better value. It has 4K abilities, a UHD Blu Ray Drive, HDR and is $100 cheaper. The difference is the specs but with none of the games being shown and talked about mentioning any of the frame rate increases, etc., im like 50/50 on PS4 PRO. Was definitely more hyped BEFORE the conference.
