    Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

Credit card rewards are a big one. I can use my double cash to get 2% back from the PS store...but I can get the code from best buy, get a $10 pre-order bonus (when available), get my 6% rewards on my best buy card, and the purchase counts towards the total spent needed to be elite plus each year. In that respect it makes no sense to buy it directly from Sony/Microsoft.

Gifting, much easier to buy a card from a store and give to whomever the gift is for rather than emailing them a code or needing to print out the email with details.

Parents buying for kids...can get them digital if they prefer, but don't need to put a card on the PSN account for the purchase.

More sales opportunities...someone is in Best Buy, Walmart, etc...stop through the games section, see a game they'd might want...but eh I'd still rather buy digitally for the convenience. Oh they have it right here as a code, cool.

People who want digital games but prefer to not pay with a card or whatever...there still are plenty of people in this world who are scared to make purchases online.

Edit - and a big one...preorder from psn, you are locked into that purchase forever even before the game releases. Pre-order digital from best buy, I have up until they email me the code at the time of release to cancel. And it isn't charged right away, only charged once they complete the purchase and send the code.

      Thanks for the info, guys.

As I said, I didn't even know they sold digital game codes in store. I always bought games physically, and bought them on PSN if it was the better deal or if I absolutely had to.

It's a shame then that this is happening, especially if it doesn't help stores. I'm not a fan of the conversion to the digital realm everywhere, anyway. I'd prefer to see the physical stuff always exist (cash, newspapers, CD's and DVD's, consoles, etc.). Hearing this news definitely does worsen things, even if they were getting a digital version of the game.

For what it is worth, I know Best Buy only started emailing the digital codes recently, within the past year or so. Before that you had to go into the store, see the limited selection of digital games they had on a card (maybe only 5 or so per console.) When you brought that to the register to check out the code was printed on the receipt.

At that point there was a very small selection and not usually worth the trip to the store, GCU didn't apply, and they were never part of the $10 preorder bonuses. I personally at that point still bought directly from Xbox/PS because that is where it didn't make much sense to do it (and maybe why a few people questioned it at all?)

But once they started having a large majority of games available digitally to buy online and they would email the code, that was when I started buying from BB exclusively. I think that only started at some point in 2018.

Sony ended it because it obviously wasn't making them any money and was probably costing them more to do so. Sony obviously has all the metric data from all the sales they make so they know if consumers are buying games digitally from other stores. It simply doesn't pay for them to keep it going.

Not only that but personally, if it was me, I wouldn't allow any retailer to sell digital game codes because why would I let them get the business when it could come directly to me via PSN? Again, it's pure business.

I know some gamers are upset about this decision but at the same time, when are gamers not upset or complaining about something? LOL.

I always buy digital on console but it would not have been hard for them to implement a gifting system on console first then announce this. They just don’t think sometimes and make a ton of decisions that appear to not be for gamers when that goes directly against one of their slogans.

Gifting could be announced Monday during their State of Play live stream which could fit since this ends April 1st.

Is the rumor true that the PS5 might be backwards compatible with all the Playstation consoles which means it will play any Playstation disc? That would be neat-o if true.

I'm fully expecting PS5 to be fully backwards compatible with PS4 games but that's it. PS/PS2/PS3 will probably be on their PS Now service. Always a chance for PS/PS2 but due to the Cell Processor of PS3, I would say that's close to zero percent. Would be amazing if they could pull it off though.

Of course, it depends on how PS5/PS4 backwards compatibility is implemented. Will it be like PS2 was where you can just insert any PS1 disc and it plays or would it be like Xbox One where all the publishers have to agree to put their game on the backwards compatibility list which may also include Microsoft paying the publisher to do so.

Have to wait and see how it all plays out.

Hopefully not 'April fools': PSN terms have been updated to allow refunds within 14 days of purchase if you have not downloaded the content. Pre order content can be refunded as well

As a person who purchases many vr contents digitally, this is welcome news. Should make many PS gamers here happy too.

Hope its true spiderman ps4 was started on in late 2014 and yet the last ratchet didn't come out un till like April 2016. That means spiderman was started on like a year+ before ratchet was even done. Would be awesome to get another Ratchet game say this year or something and than spiderman sequel on ps5 or something in 2021.
