Re: Questions About Live TV on Xbox One?

I hope I can rename my xbox to another word - I feel like a dink saying "xbox: blah blah blah"
I'd much rather go star trek and say "computer; watch triple D"
that or "xbone; play nba 2k14"
    or maybe Hal lol

a heads up to other canadians, don't expect to surf channels like I did, you will be yelling at your TV feeling like an arse for no reason... we won't get cable/satellite functions for a while apparently.

I'd love to be able to change that as well. I'd change mine to Hal though!

Oh and although it's not an issue for me I wonder how many neighbors wonder why the hell they keep hearing their neighbor shouting "XBOX (fill in command!!!" ??? They must think they've lost their damned minds...

Ok hopefully they fix that in an update. I hope they also fix the fact that it just stops streaming at times randomly and you have to select another station then go back to get it working again.

Of course it figures it chose last night with 9 seconds to go in the national title game to quit streaming so I had to quickly switch to my cable box.

How anyone who is a sports fan is ok with cutting their cable and watching sports over the net exclusively is completely beyond me, too flaky...

LOL, it was a feature idea early on in Xbox planning, but it basically meant we'd have an infinitely large grammar, which really hurts accuracy. By just keeping it to "Xbox", we make voice work a lot better.

Who knows though, maybe it will change someday.

And yeah, Canada, UK, France, Germany (and maybe a few others) will get the TV experience in the future. We definitely can't wait to light it up for more users.

Re: Questions About Live TV on Xbox One?

As an update, I gave a high speed HDMI cable a try. I put it between the DVR console, and the Xbox supplied HDMI from the console to my AV receiver. Unfortunately, there has been no change.

To get surround sound while watching TV, I have to have the DirecTV Tivo set to Dolby. If I turn it off, I get stereo. with Dolby on and my console set to Instant On, my DVR starts getting black screens and freezing up when I try to access my library of content. If I turn Dolby off, it begins to work correctly, but I only get stereo.

I have surround turned on in the TV & One Guide --> Troubleshooting menu. I have my DVR set to 720p specifically. In sound, I have HDMI set to 5.1 (I've also tried 7.1, with no difference, my receiver just does 5.1) and optical set to off.

I really would live to get the instant on working, because waiting for the Xbox to boot up is a pain in the butt way to just watch TV. But once we are up and running, my wife prefers having all of the voice commands work while watching TV content, so I still have it running through my console. I went about a week or two with the Xbox One on a separate input, but my wife wanted it back.

It does shut everything down perfectly, but I have to use my controller or Harmony 650 to crank it all back up.

I suspect the issue is somewhere in the HDMI handshakes. Even with it work ing well, there are little issue. When turning everything on, I sometime have to turn my receiver off and on to get a picture, although sound is there. And the Tivo is still a bit more sluggish than if I had it running directly into my receiver.

One thing I have not tried, is running everything into my TV, and bypassing the receiver completely. That would obviously not be a solution, because running on TV speakers is even worse than stereo through my speakers. But I wonder if the receiver might be the problem. It's a Yamaha RX-V375.

Re: Questions About Live TV on Xbox One?

Mendota, you're spot on with almost everything. It is an HDMI handshaking issue (technically known as 'link training') and it's probably an issue with Dolby but is exacerbated by instant on mode.

You can try removing the receiver, but it likely won't make a huge difference.

I am sorry you're seeing the issue, and doing Stereo or low power mode are your best options currently. However, I am very encouraged by the fact that your wife likes the voice commands. Many forum users struggle to get their families to use the Xbox One because of the controller or voice, but it sounds like it's the opposite in your household.

We are aware of both issues you are seeing and have been investigating them. Some STBs behave better than others, FWIW.

Thanks. I feel pretty comfortable that this will be sorted out sooner or later. I appreciate your feedback here.

As for my wife, we've been using the Kinect for Netflix for a long time. She loved the idea of pausing, playing and such for regular TV. So it was a pretty easy sell for her. She has more issues with my Harmony 650 remote than the Kinect, actually.

Speaking of that, I love how well the remote works with the Xbox One interface.

Now if you could just slip me the release date for HBO Go, we will be all good.

That's awesome. We'll be making IR control better over the coming updates too, as many commands aren't implemented or are a bit klugy.

I have no clue on HBO Go, sorry. I think it's the HBO folks you'll need to nag

Like a Sleep Timer? Man I wish this is coming soon. I fall asleep watching TV sometimes and would love for the console to turn itself off.

                            Question on Instant On:

It's gotten to where "Xbox On" works for me on the first or 2nd try usually.

However, my wife doesn't seem able to get it to work much at all. She'll try 30ish times before resorting to the controller.

Is there anything I can do to help her learn that one? Once it's on the Xbox picks up her commands great. I know when it's off the Kinect is lower powered so not as good for processing, but seems odd that it doesn't listen to her like it does me.

Side note: It was hilarious the other night. She was trying 40 times to get it to turn on. I walk up and go "Xbox On" and it works right then. She then told the Xbox to f off lol.

LOL. Here's the advice I usually give, and it works great for me.

Look straight at the Kinect, be within 5-10 feet of it. Assertively say the following:
                              "Xbox" [pause 1 second] "On"

Almost as if you are telling your dog: "Fido....GO" and pointing outside.

Your wife would hate me, I yell 'Xbox, On!' from the front door a good 30-40 feet away and around a corner and my entertainment center is on and waiting for me by the time I turn off the alarm and make my way to the living room.

Only a couple times have we had an issue, and it's because we need to do a hard reset/power off because the TV app fails to start. Obvious when it is happening because the components don't turn off/on with the Xbox. This has happened maybe 3-4 times since launch.
