Re: Sony PlayStation Meeting Discussion Thread

Now you want to talk about price to value, then I agree. Sony really did a poor job here and Microsoft caught them sleeping by releasing the Xbox One S. Shocking to me they didn't go back to the drawing board and scrap the slim, release the Pro at $349 and then a newer system next year, but doesn't seem to be the case.

The PS4 Slim vs. the XBox One S boils down to friends who game with you and exclusives. The One S is simply the better system when it comes to bells and whistles.

Now is the S a better system than the Pro? Probably not, but like when the XB1 launched vs. the PS4, is the Pro $100 better than the S? Also, probably not. It's a powerful system, just don't where it fits in with the ecosystem today. To take full advantage of it's specs you will need a 4K HDR TV set, that's a lot to ask. Sony gave minimal reasons why a 1080P HDTV owner would want the Pro. That was very disappointing. I get they are trying to market to a certain individual but still.

Since the PS4 Pro's power supply is rated over 300W will it be too hot and noisy?

With that said, do they even make a 4K HDR TV without built in apps to stream 4K, so it's redundant anyway. LOL

Mark Cerny did say the focus is on games. Yet last time they tried to put the focus on entertainment apps people complained LOL It's a no win situation.

I agree. It's been a long time since I bought or rented a blu Ray or dvd. I've been streaming all the movies I want to watch so no UHD player is not a big deal to me at all. Also, I already have an Xbox one s so if I ever wanted to, I can watch UHD disks there.

No one knows about noise level yet, but I would assume that they will be as quiet as possible after the launch systems had jet engines in them LOL

Power wise, I almost figured it would be higher than 300W

Do you guys think with a lot of people complaining about no UHD drive that Sony may add it in before the release in November?

Absolutely not. It's seriously a big deal for maybe 10% of the people buying the thing and that's probably even a high estimate.

The UHD thing, like EG said, isn't a big deal just based on the state of physical media. It would've been a bigger deal when everyone was buying DVD or Blu-ray, so you go in the store to get a player, and one at a comparable cost can also play games. In this climate, I doubt most will ever find out. It is strange to not include it though IMO, but it could've just been a cost thing.

Agree, it should have been there mainly, just because but it's not a huge loss. Sony is full tilt on Ultra Violet now (which is weird since the PSN video store doesn't support it, but I digress) and doesn't see physical media as the future.

I'm sure price was the biggest factor though. Which makes you wonder how MS got it in there at their price point.

I'm so saddened by the whole "moving to streaming" thing. No matter what it will always display some sort of compression. Physical media FTW.

Ha! At the same time, I've been spoiled to the point that "If you know it's not it and that it can be better, you still end up disappointed." A placebo effect might even kick into place, but knowing that something is possible to be better, you hope to have it made available to you.

I agree with you. Personally my knock against Sony is just the same as yours; compared to the competition both new PS4s are offering a weird middle ground of value. I buy all my movies on Apple TV now, so I don't care about the UHD capabilities.

It again just comes down to... $100 more for 4K and no UHD (both of which the S offers), or the same price to have neither options (both of which the S offers).

Even as a Sony leaning consumer, if someone were looking to finally buy their first console today and couldn't decide between the Xbox One S and the PS4 Slim, I'd have a hard time not recommending the MS product. At this point it's the better value. Period.

PS4 Slim looks nice at $299. Will jump if/when my day 1 console decides to die. The thing has started acting funny in recent months. Nothing shown PS4 Pro related convinced me to open my wallet. And the new PS Wireless Platinum Headset was a disappointment as well. Decision to use hinges again is a huge turnoff.
