You're not a typical consumer of Nintendo products then. Their typical consumer, as is also reflected in this thread, is after their IPs. Gamers who want sports games already own a PS4 or Xbox One.

Now one thing to say though is if Nintendo could start developing alternative sports games, for example as I said previously give us a Tecmo Bowl type football game versus a Madden one, then they could do very well I think.

But hardly any consumers are going to look to buy a Nintendo Switch to play the NBA2K18 or Maddens of the world on the go.. that's a niche market.

All of those agreements always exclude the first party development. In other words, yes Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft could develop an NFL game with real teams, real players, etc of any sport.

So yes, Nintendo could, if they wanted to, make an NFL game like a cartoon, arcade type really cool NFL game (think NFL Fever but prettier and more fun) and it would have the real teams, real players, etc and it'd sell like freakin' hotcakes.

But unfortunately I doubt they'd ever go that direction..

        I don't think that's an accurate assumption.

It's 100% accurate. That's always the agreement between the leagues and the hardware manufacturers.

EDIT: ok maybe I am wrong, I just did some searching. I don't think it's very clear now...

Re: Nintendo Switch Announced, Scheduled to Release March 2017

All of the agreements are different. 2K has no exclusivity, Madden is EA only, MLB used to be 3rd party exclusive to 2K with 1st parties able to make their own games, which is how the Show happened.

The issue with saying "people who want to play sports games already have an Xbox One or PS4" is that they have those because they want to play the games and can't on a Nintendo console. If Nintendo's plan is to keep being a secondary console then their sales will mirror the failure of the Wii U. I don't understand the thought that they can do fine without 3rd parties when we just saw them crash and burn with the same approach.

I think the NFL is exclusive to EA not just madden "the game" itself iirc, but yea all the deals are different. I just don't think Nintendo is willing to pay those what I imagine to be huge licensing payments to do a first party sports game of that nature, so it's on the already licensed 3rd parties to bring theirs over.

Honestly even if it's just ports that's fine, it's better then nothing

Think we'll be lucky to even see ports unfortunately. We'll know soon. Given the specs they'd probably have to be ports of the 360/ps3 versions.

No sign of Frostbite support I think yet?

Ports aren't going to work to help the system, maybe it'll satisfy you guys itch but the numbers won't be there to help Nintendo make it a worthwhile pursuit.

They need original content that differentiates the system from the 2 big boys in order to succeed, not crappy, watered down ports that most people already own on the other system.

True. I was referring to sports games specially when I mentioned even just ports would be better then nothing.

Nintendo has original content that separates them from the other 2 in the vast library of their own games (MARIO, Zelda, etc.). The problem is lack of any legit 3rd party titles, honestly for me it's the complete opposite reason of why I'm growing bored of the big 2 systems now, same games each year sequel after sequel. Take those games mix in nintendos games and you have the perfect system imo

I agree, in part. Totally agree that I am not the typical Nintendo target market. But I disagree that what I am looking for is a niche market. Nintendo is not just having another console to replace the Wii or the Wii U. If they were, then I would totally agree with you. But, the Switch is something new, and brings a gaming experience one can't get with PS4 or XB1. A sports gamer (well, any gamer) can continue his or her franchise/career at home or on the road seamlessly. I have to think there is a decent sized market that would be interested in being able to continue their same games at home and on the go (kind of like the Vita should have been). If I could play one of my games on the Switch, and be able to play home or out, I would buy that version rather than the PS4 version in a heartbeat.

Yeah I see your point but I think the portable market is mostly pointless as people on the go typically play games on their phone or tablet. I say mostly because yeah there will be people who want to play their Madden game on their Nintendo Switch and then take it on the go but I just don't think that's a very sizable market at all.

The odd thing to me about all of this is Nintendo seems to be searching for a market that is untapped by the two big boys and I think they are overlooking the biggest market of all, the classic video gaming nostalgia market by people my age (I'm 46) who played Nintendo games as a youth.

That is a HUGE market and is mostly untapped. Right now it is only being addressed by independent developers doing indy games for Xbox One and PS4.

Just imagine man, a Tecmo Bowl with updated graphics (remaining 2D but lush, really awesome modern graphical effects)... Or imagine even some of the old Nintendo games being updated and/or changed to look modern while still maintaining their classic look and feel. How about a really awesome F-Zero with modern graphical effects?

The untapped market is there and it's massive but Nintendo is completely missing a huge opportunity I think...

I am 50, so I totally understand your point, and that's an idea I could get behind. Redo Tecmo Bowl, Bases Loaded and Blades of Steel, just sharpening the graphics a bit and adding a career or franchise mode (but keeping the gameplay) and there would be a winning idea!
