So I'm really thinking about getting a switch. Any pointers y'all have? Must buys?

Think I'm picking up Mario kart, NBA 2k, and skyrim. I wish they had smash bros. But oh well.

I guess one question I have. Is can I just go portable right away? Or do I have to set it up on a TV first?

You could just use it strictly as a handheld and never even plug it into a TV if you want to.

If you have a SO that likes video games, we've enjoyed the hell out of playing Overcooked together. And if you want a timekiller, Stardew Valley is really good for that. Stardew Valley is basically a farming game set in a world with Gameboy Pokemon kind of graphics.

And Mario Odyssey is a must have IMO.

Damn that's cool. Appreciate the quick reply. Do they have like a app store too. Hbo go, watch ESPN, Netflix. You get my drift.

Only app available so far is Hulu.

I'll second Overcooked for a fun couch co-op game.

Mario Odyssey and Zelda are both must-haves. I would go with Zelda over Skyrim personally.

Also - a pro controller should be your second accessory behind a screen protector.

Pro controller only if you play more on TV....if you're handheld it won't really help you a ton.

In theory more apps are coming like Netflix but no one knows...it's not a priority for Nintendo

Yeah, this is an absolute must.

I'd also recommend a travel case of some sort if you plan to take it around with you everywhere.

I can definitely understand the recommendation for a pro controller, but for now, I've been content with the charging dock controller thing that the Switch comes with. I don't think the pro controller is necessary for any of the games I own yet, but I'm sure I'll get to that point in the future.

I need a charging dock eventually, but for me I got an extra set of joycons fo family over pro right now.

Agree 100% on screen protector and case, those were immediate purchases for me.

Also consider a microSD card eventually too.

Everyone says the pro-controller is a must, but so far the standard dock one has been perfect. It's really small, but it is easy to use, and not super expensive. I have had zero issues so far at least.

Zelda and Mario Kart are way too much fun, I've been playing Zelda all day, and really haven't progressed much haha.

                        Continuing Odyssey probably tomorrow.

I use handheld more as well, so that's part of it for me. Plus just cost, I need to use my money smartly so rather buy other things instead of that now, when I wouldn't use it as much.

Good points on portability and the pro controller; however, if he's playing Zelda or Skyrim I can't imagine making much progress in handheld mode. To me the handheld controls for Zelda are a little clunky and I catch myself fumbling with some actions. Plus, my eyes feel strain after about an hour or so of looking at the screen and it's fine details/lines.

Certainly worth the trouble for the short-term, but I couldn't imagine playing those games the majority of the time in handheld mode.

Different eyes, different preferences for sure!

I play 70% handheld, 30% on my tv with the controller it came with. Plenty of progress can be made, but certainly depends on how good your eyes are! Haha.
