The main feature of the device is full compatibility with the Steam service, starting from the user interface, similar to what the player sees on the display of his personal computer, to the process of downloading games and, in fact, the game itself. I agree with you 100% about phones. Touch controls don't do it for me.

That's why I love products like these.







I'm a bit less fond of the controller clips, they work well enough, but not so much since getting a Fold 3, and far less portable.

But, if I have to carry around clip-on controllers, then I might as well just get a dedicated gaming machine, like the Vita or the Steam Deck. I get where you're coming from, but at that point, the convenience of a phone is lost.

I did the same thing with the Nintendo Switch, handheld gaming is just not for me.

Yeah, definitely a chocolate v vanilla thing. I find that I hardly ever use my PS4, and the vast majority of my gaming is on my Vita (until I can get my Steam Deck). I much prefer handheld gaming. I am one of the few folks here that has zero interest in the new console generation - I think I have bought my last console system.

Wow! You haven't had it that long. If you don’t mind me asking, what was you're major reason for not using? Was it games, not what you expected, etc.?

I know with my switch, it came down to the games, which I knew in advance. With the amount of games on the Deck, I'm kinda of hopeful I'll put some time in.

I still have my Switch. I only put probably 20 hours on it since launch. Hell, I think I only updated it twice.

I played the Switch a lot when i had to travel every couple months, so it paid itself off, but i think it'll become a system for my son eventually...I just don't play it enough regularly and it's not cheap for games so i'm just not buying much as often. I wish it could do Game Pass

I've had mine for 2 days, here's an unedited Adderall-fueled (TMI: I have ADHD and a prescription) ramble I typed to my friends this afternoon.

tl;dr - it's great, just be ready for technical issues, which can mostly just be googled and you'll find a video or reddit post covering it.

My first impressions on Steam Deck... it's neat, but for technical users only right now IMO. I've had to re-verify integrity of various bits of the OS, had games not start, yolo'd right into trying to install a game and had to delete that because I couldn't install apps in desktop mode because of obscure linux errors (5mb flatpacks requiring 500mb of free space, only 490mb free or something). Once past that... thing is f-ing neat. Have some games installed, and Xbox Cloud Streaming working on it so far.

There's a lot of linux-y things that people respond with to fix problems, that's absolutely not for everyone. I know nothing about kernels, etc, so people saying to use Proton-PE build and whatnot means nothing to me, obviously need to watch more videos - a nice boon for content creators and they've stepped up to the challenge for everything I've needed thus far, including getting emulators setup. I just need to get some ROMs over and probably install a BIOS or two that things like the PS2 emulator needs and I should be golden there. Less of a priority day 1, but something I absolutely want to get setup.

Long term... need a bigger microSD, and may swap out the internal storage once I'm more comfortable. Picking a few games that I'm going to play or revisit largely because of the novelty of the device - like Witcher 3 or Fallen Jedi, though some of those I really want to play on my desktop for the visuals, so will revisit. Have installed several games from Steam that are suitable for the device - Sonic, Rogue Legacy 2, and a couple RPGs (a Final Fantasy and Octopath Traveler). Did that this afternoon and then spent all my gaming time working through trying to get them working in offline mode and overcoming cloud sync errors - required restarts and verifying integrity of OS files... things your nontechnical gamer is going to need a lot of help doing IMO.

So not for everyone, but this is a nice device. It will get there, hope they revise the specs every few years. My primary justification for ordering it is for it to be a more multi-purpose Vita-style handheld. I want to be able to use all the streaming services (and most work currently) as well as a remote play device. Everything else is gravy, but intend to explore the limits.

Yup, that's via Xbox Cloud streaming, I'm a dozen or so games into a RTTS career and I've only played it via streaming either on PC or the Steam Deck.

So, since a bunch of you folks have gotten your Steam Deck (my e-mail should be coming any day now . . . ), I was hoping for some feedback. One of the things I am most looking forward to is playing my old PS2 and PS3 sports games on the go. Have you folks tried to play like Madden 14 or 16, NCAA Football 14 or NHL 10 or Legacy on RPCS3? How about NFL2K5 or Madden 05 or 09, or NHL2K8 on PCSX2? I know the sports games are demanding with emulators, so I am curious how well the SD can handle them (Fingers crossed!). Appreciate any thoughts on this!

I've tried NCAA 14. Runs not great.

Madden runs okay.

Haven't tried NHL or Legacy.

Strange because some sport games run just fine.
