Re: Official OS Rap appreciation Topic!

Minstrel Show comes out tomorrow, but I have to work tomorrow from right after school until about 9, and I doubt the mall is still open when I'm done. There is one store that's open until 10 in Cary, so I'll probably get it then. I just wish I could go get it today because I have nothing to do until MNF.

Anyways...other CD's I plan on getting later are:

Lawless Element: "Sound Vision In Stereo"
DJ Premier/Mr. Thing: "Kings of Hip Hop"
Nicolay: "City Lights 1.5" (if I can find it)

Well basically if someone is featured on a song from a popular artist, I'll go to look and see if that person has a CD out or whatever. I go to a lot of websites. I heard a Lawless Element song by going to eckounlimited.com. I'm tempted to get C-Rayz Walz joint too. Remember, he was the cat on MTV's Made that tried to help that little white rhyme. I thought he was phony from that one episode, but I also heard a song of his on eckounlimited.com and now I'm considering purchasing his joint.

Minstrel Show is a must buy. It's the second best CD of the year, behind Kanye's Late Registration and before Common's Be.

For all of my backpackers, you gotta show some love for Little Brother.

MS definately is, it's album of the year by a good margin. Production wise MS and LR are basically even, which ever your preference on sound would be your favorite. And then you have to compare Phonte's lyrical ability versus Kanye. Hell, Big Pooh is a better emcee than Kanye, and Phonte is quite a bit better than Pooh.

                Lyrically MS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> LR

                Production is even.

And KRS, not a bad collection. I'd definatley get some of the older Root's albums if you don't have them.

Yeah, I got the MS today, and I'm feeling the joint after just one listen, whereas the Kanye CD eventually grew on me. Minstrel Show is the best album of the year so far...looks like it may end that way.

I expected more from 9th Wonder IMO.

4/5 even though I can listen to the album without skipping.

Nah, I'm impressed. The thing about albums produced by almost just one producer is that you want most of the beats to sound like they are from the same person, but he really switches up his style on a lot of songs.

You would have to factor Kanye's guest apperances in that too tho. Jay-Z, Nas, and Common all put down nice verses on this album. Cam'ron and Paul Wall laid it down too.

Eh, too many guest apperances take something away from an album IMO, it starts to feel like a mixtape or have no continuity through the whole album. But with Kayne it's unavoidable because he's a poor emcee. I was amazed that Cam'ron and Paul Wall actually had impressive versus on LR and obviously Jay, Nas and Common ripped it.

But Phonte is just as nice lyrically as anyone in the game right now, even Jay and Nas.

After reading your "favorite tracks" list in the other thread a week or so ago, I'd expect you to think that.
