Re: Another HDTV questions info thread

I said it will display a 720p signal, just not natively, it will upconvert to 1080i. I've never seen a projection or CRT that does 720p natively.

The Xbox will pick the right one by it's self. I have all 3 on with mine.

I have a rear projection CRT as well that says it will do 480p, 720p, and 1080i, but the 720p does not work with the XBox. I guess it upconverts like extremeGamer says. If I have all three options selected on my XBox and I put in a game like MVP baseball which supports 720p, I get a garbled image. If I have 480p and 1080i selected, then my image is fine. I don't really get it.

I have heard that some titles coming out on Xbox Next this year will be in 720p. Are you saying that even if the game producers create it in native 720p, and if I have a TV that can display 720p, and the Xbox Next is capable of displaying 720p, I still won't be able to see it in 720p on my TV? Sounds fishy to me…

Again, yes, you can display 720p, just not natively. There's like 5 XBox games running in 720p, my Samsung CRT can display them because it upconverts to 1080i. I can set just 720p on with the Xbox and my TV will display it.

Maybe your TV doesn't display 720p, which is why when you have a 720p game and you go to play it, the TV doesn't see it. Try turning 720p off, and then trying your games that you are having problems with.

I can tell you now, your TV does not do 720p. If it did, you would see a picture when playing a 720p game and having it set with the Xbox. My old HDTV did not do 720p, when I popped in MVP 2004, and had all 3 options checked in the XBox, I got a scrambled pic, but if I turned off 720p, I could see it in 480p no problem. Now on my new set that upconverts 720p, I have all 3 turned and can see MVP no problem.

                        Hey Extreme,

I am not so sure. The only game I have is ESPN Football 2k5 for Xbox. It is in 480p. I have not yet attempted to play a 720p game.

Ok, then what was your original question? You don't have an option for 720p because your TV won't do it natively, meaning you'll see 720p signals in 1080i. That is if your TV does 720p. To test, get a 720p game, set only 720p as the only option in the Xbox for HD, and see if you can see it. If you can, then your TV upconverts, if not, then your TV cannot do a 720p signal.

My original question was whether or not I should turn OFF the signals that I am not using on the Xbox. Meaning if all I am playing is a game that is in 480p, does it make sense to turn 1080i and 720p OFF in the Xbox dashboard. That question was answered, stating that the Xbox will recognize whatever signal it is receiving and automatically select the one it needs. Sooooo…I should just leave all three options turned ON.

Can you give me a list of games that I can RENT in order to test and see if I can see 780p? I am going to be real pissed off if I can't because 780p is what I need to take advantage of the BluRay Disks (High Definition Movies on DVD) I will be buying in the next 2 years!
