Re: What is the difference between HDTV and EDTV

This post is not in response to anybody here. It is relocated from another thread. OS felt it would be more useful here in this thread.

Hey maka, (Or anyone that is knowledgeable about 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i.)

I have a couple more follow-up questions. You said that 480p means that the TV is showing all 480 lines of resolution at once. Meaning all 480 come one at once showing one still picture. Then it switches to another picture with all 480 showing the next frame in the action. Right? I am also assuming you mean 480 vertical lines of resolution. Then we have interlaced which shows the even lines only, with the odd lines turned off. Then the odd ones come on showing the next frame in the action with the even ones turned off. Back and forth and so on, correct? Well, if I have a HiDef TV that is capable of 1080 lines of resolution interlaced, and I am using only 540 lines at any given time during the interlacing process, how is this worse than 480p? Would not the 540i be displaying 60 more lines of resolution, resulting in a better picture? 480 lines of resolution does not sound like a lot. How does the number of lines of vertical resolution relate to my screen size? Does the size of the line (thickness) of resolution change from TV to TV? Can you explain in further detail?

    Thanks again.

Well, I'm sure renting Voom's equipment for 0 down, 0 for the install, and 9.50 a month for renting the box.

My problem is that I MUST have DirecTV because of my subscription to NFL Sunday Ticket. 5 months of bliss, 7 months of blah.

Vader - I'm not sure this will work for everyone but it did for me.

Call DirecTV and say you want to cancel and switch over to cable because paying over $400 for HD isn't worth it to you when you can get digital cable, rent the box and have HDTV without purchasing anything further. Be firm with them. They DO NOT want to loose you as a customer and what happened to me is, they made me an offer $199 for the box and dish and gave me free Showtime.

                  It's worth a shot.

                        Hey Big D,

My fear is that they would call my bluff, cancel the service, and then I am having to pay for a hookup all over again for NFL Sunday Ticket this September. Not to mention that I would lose my introductory rate of only $37 per month that I have locked in every September, October, November and December. It is up to $49.75 per month now. If there was some sort of coupon or something for purchasing the HD receiver that would be cool. I know that my NFL Sunday Ticket is worth more to me than watching reruns of Cheers in HiDef right now.

                        Any other suggestiuons?

It is somewhat of a risk and like you said "they may see your bluff", but if you have any experience in cancelling accounts whether it's an ISP or cable service these people will do anything to keep your business. It wouldn't suprise me if they make commission on convincing you to stay with the service.
