I'm still leaning toward getting the SXRD because it looked great to me at CC a few weeks back but i didn't really change any settings on the tv's that I looked at (also I didn't check out any HL-S'...only HL-R's) and the price is pretty large. I'm going to go CC to check the sets out in person but i'll change all the settings this time.

    A few questions....

    1. Which tv's look the best during gaming?

    2. Will I have local HD channels with a HD comcast digital cable box?
Check out the Samsung HLS-5087 or HLS-5687 at Circuit City. I think Best Buy only has the HLS-6187. I have the HLS-5088 and it's not sold at any CC or Best Buy. I got it from Vanns.com and here is the link, looks like they just got them back in stock. The 50" is $2699 with a free Sony Upconverting DVD. I ordered mine with the free shipping option on a Thursday night about midnight and it was ready to be delivered to my door the following Tuesday so Vanns is really fast too, you wouldn't be waiting 2 weeks or whatnot for your tv if you go through them.

You may want to read back through this thread a page or two for full impressions from me of the set the day after I got it. I've had mine almost a week now and I can assure you all games look freakin' fantastic on it for the 360 and PS2. I'm very happy with this set. No lag or anything either, even without using the Game mode. The model HLS-5088 adds TV guide, picture in picture and cablecard option. The HLS-5087 and HLS-5687 do not have those 3 things but if none of those matter to you then you could get one of the sets at CC or Best Buy (I believe Best Buy only has the HLR-6187 in the xx87 models though as I said earlier)

Now as for comparison to the Sony SXRD, I'm not going to say it looks better than the Sony SXRD as that was my original choice but once I saw the Samsung HLR-5087 I changed my mind. I will go out on a limb and say the Samsungs look as good as the Sony SXRD's though in my honest opinion. And the Samsung is about $400 cheaper (and if you include that DVD player it's $520 cheaper) and I like the design of the case much better of the Samsung as the Sony has those huge speakers that hang out to the side that you will probably never use, not to mention taking up more space in general. I much prefer the Samsungs all-black look too as opposed to Sonys mixture of Grey/Black.

As for Comcast, I live in Richmond and I get a lot of HD channels here. And they're adding more all the time, for example they just added ESPN2 in HD. If you have any other questions about the Samsung set go ahead and post and i'll try to answer for you. I will say that Vanns.com was a great experience and saved me a lot of money but you cannot buy an extended warranty through them directly, although if you read back the thread someone else posted a way to get one through another vendor, so long as you do so within 30 days of buying the set.

You get what you pay for. I went through this same process. But at the end of the day, I'd rather pay the extra couple of hundred bucks to get the best picture.

ok F*** it, I'm taking the plunge tonight with the SXRD. I'm going to price match it at Best Buy and get it for $2,699. My parents had agreed to go half on whatever tv I got, but this is a little higher than they were banking on. I'll just finance it with no interest and use their $ and mine to take a nice little chunk out of the principal. how does the financing work at these places, I've never done this before. Do they just put it on a credit card or what?

yeah you get a best buy credit card and then you have 18 months i believe to pay it off and if you don't by then you have to pay alot of interest.

i'm curious though as to why you seemingly ignored my post. vanns.com has the samsung 5088 for $2699 no tax and no shipping and you would have the set the same as or before best buy would deliver it (unless you plan on taking it home yourself tonight).

usually i agree with jistic's statement of you get what you pay for but the new samsungs are cheaper and just as good so i don't think that applies here. as i said, i had my sights on the SXRD but the samsung 5088 looks as good as the sxrd and is cheaper with a nicer cabinet design. also the sony SXRD's do not have 1080P input, they only upconvert to 1080P, whereas the samsung has true 1080P inputs without any upconverting (i was told this on these forums and went to circuit city and best buy and was also told the same thing so please no one shoot me if the SXRD's have changed in the last few weeks and now have true 1080P input, heh). why spend more money for a set with lesser features unless you just are dead set on sony?

also, on that vanns deal you can get either a free harmony programmable remote or sony upconverting DVD player for free. those are generally $100-$120 by themselves.

As for financing, right now BB is offering NO INTEREST on all TV's $499.99 & up. In order to get this, you must have/apply for a BB Credit Card.

If you apply, hopefully your app get's accepted for enough to get that SXRD.. I personally would take a real close look @ the JVC DILA.. This TV is very underratted. It's a LCOS Display, which means:

No Burn-In, No Rainbow Effects, No Screen Door Effects.

Very good picture. BB is offering a 56" with the stand for $2,300. Here's a thread from AVS on the DILA:

Please post reviews / issues / tweaks etc.. on JVC's newest HD-ILA sets in this thread. Models include the Z786 / Z886 as well as 'G' models. Thanks, ocxplant

            Good Luck with your purchase...

i'm getting the sxrd for $2,699, same price as you paid. I don't really need a new dvd player, the one I have works fine aka xbox 360. I (personally) like the look of the sxrd, some think it looks bulky with the speakers, but I like it. I do like the all black of Sammy, but not enough to go the other way. Plus, the Best Buy doesn't have any 50" 1080p's Sammy, only 56 & 61. I also plan on taking the set home tonight with me, no way I would pay extra to have some random dude carry something that is under 100 lbs.

As for the 1080p upconvert/input, who cares? There won't be anything putting out true 1080p signals for quite a while. IMO the sony set doesn't have lesser features, it still has the pc input, 1080p, Picture beside picture or whatever its called, the sign today at Best Buy said it had dual HDMI inputs, which I think is wrong because on every other website I've seen it said it has only one. Again, dual hdmi would be a big deal for some, but I only need HDMI for my cable box and I'm not buying a Ps3. While I respect your opinion and understand your happiness with vanns, I just visually like the sxrd better.

If you go through Best Buy you aren't paying the same, you have to pay sales tax there. As for paying extra I told you delivery was free.

Good for you man. Believe me you'll love it. Once you get this bitch calibrated you'll be in heaven. Believe me when I say on the Pro settings with proper calibration it'll make the TV you saw in the store look like an old piece of crap. I still am amazed at it. Took me a few weeks to really be happy with settings, but now I don't touch 'em. I used the Avia disk BTW.

Make sure you buy the warranty, it'll probably be about $300, but it'll be worth it.

The SXRD does have two HDMI inputs. Just make sure that whatever you hook up is outputting 1080i so the set deinterlaces to 1080p.

A question though, bates. Why are your parents putting up half the cost of the TV?

*Jistic got some disc at Circuit City with the TV, but AVIA, Digital Video Essentials can be found easily on Amazon or other web sites (no chain stores). AVIA is easier to use but DVE is more thorough. A user at avsforum has his own calibration disc which I use (along with DVE) and it's pretty damn good...though you have to buy outside color filters (or use the ones in AVIA or DVE).*
