    I Just Picked Up...

I thought this could be a nice music thread. Let people know recent CD purchases or bands your starting to get into.

Anyway, I just picked up "Howl" by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. I actually picked it up Tuesday but didn't listen to it until this evening. I wasn't familar with BRMC before "Howl" and judging by many of the comments I've read about the album, "Howl" is a big departure from BRMC's last two albums.

I'm loving the stripped down, straight forward approach. The influences shine through and result in an album filled with good songs. I'll have to check out their first two albums just to see how different they are.

I picked up that CD a little while ago. It's nice to have, but that's about it. My dad already has all of these songs and the CDs that they come from, and the hip hop side was really poor.

        Artist Nicolay
        Album Dutch Masters, Vol.1

I'm picking this CD up Saturday morning from my local Borders bookstore, and I really look forward to hearing it. Nic is an underrated producer in the Justus League camp, and his production actually sounds like a song on its own rather than just a loop. On Supastition's album, he produced a song called "Rise", and it creates a beautiful backdrop for Supa.

The first two BRMC albums are different than "Howl." Night-and-day different.

But they're also very good. If anything, "Howl" proved to me that BRMC is a damn good band because it's flexible and can create excellent music in varied styles.

            Last five acquisitions:
Chris Thile, Not All Who Wander Are Lost & Deceiver
            James Blunt, Back To Bedlam
Little Big Town, The Road To Here
            Josh Kelley, Almost Honest
            Sean Watkins, Blinders On

I guess the last artist I really "got into" was Ray LaMontagne a couple months back. I had heard how brilliant he was for a very long time, but didn't actually experience him until I saw him on the Austin City Limits with Ben Folds. From his five song set I was completely hooked. I instantly got his Trouble CD and it's been almost all I've listened to since I got it. His voice has to be heard to be believed and his writing talent is far superior to any "new" artist I've heard in a long time.

A Chris Thile fan! Cool! Man, that kid can pick a mandolin like no one I've seen.

Not sure if you get BET Jazz on your satellite or cable provider, but Thile was featured in the show "Studio Jams" this season, which puts about five or six musicians who never have played together into a studio for a day and documents how they make music together.

Thile was matched with a great jazz sax player named Karl Denson, jazz-freeform rock guitarist Steve Kimock, and a super jazz bass player and drummer. Man, that was 60 minutes of TV magic watching those talented cats make music.

I'm really getting into Ulrich Schnauss these days. He's a German composer of some insane electronic work that blends ambient, chill and progressive house into some beautiful, melodic stuff.

              Take care,

                the Mars Volta - Scabdates

tMV is a band that must be seen live to truly appreciate. Scabdates is a live album. It's a good album but doesn't quite do the band justice.

Been a Thile fan for a long time now. What that kid is capable of is just amazing. I've only just now started getting into his solo stuff though, after hearing his work in Nickel Creek for so long. His playing on the instrumental Not All Who Wander Are Lost is just sick, and the range he shows -- playing every instrument, plus producing -- on Deceiver is crazy. How three extremely talented musicians like Thile and the Watkins siblings could end up in the same band is astounding.

"Howl" is a wonderful album, just instant classic IMO.

How are the first two albums, hard rock?

                        Tendrils:

The first two records are much darker, more punkish, heavy on the riffs. Really, really good, but the polar opposite of "Howl." I think you'll like them if you appreciate them on their own and not expect "Howl."

"Stop," a first song off the "Take Them On, On Your Own" album, is a great song. Really sludgy, distorted bass line with wall of sound guitars. Good stuff.

I got a $25 gift certificate to Sam Goody yesterday from the secret santa thing at work. I'm picking out a couple CDs online right now. If only Sam Goody didn't overprice almost all their CDs.

So far, I've decided on Howlin Wolf's "Howlin Wolf/Moanin In the Moonlight." Might get Mr. Lif's EP and another CD.
